Veg combo with Dorowot and tibs!
    Mehreen U.

Adore this place! I became a huge fan of Ethiopian food during my visits to LA - my boyfriend moved there for work and was living a stones throw from Little Ethiopia. Since he moved back we hadn't been brave enough to try a place in case it didn't live up to our fave place in LA! Whenever I got back from a trip, I'd always rave on about Ethiopian food to my parents and my enthusiasm rubbed off and they were desperate to try some! Back story over - my Dad had his birthday last month and requested going to an Ethiopian place. After much research I decided on Merkato and I'm so glad I did! The food was on point. We got the seasoned injera to share between us all and was so tasty!! For the main, we opted for Dorowot and beef tibs (these were mine and my boyfriends favourites in LA) - these did not disappointed! The veggie dishes we got to go with the meat dishes were great too, lots of flavour and so moreish! One thing that I hadn't experience before was the coffee ceremony - they burned frankincense and walked around with it to every table then left it on the tray with the coffee, such a lovely experience! The lady serving was great too - my Dad had a million and one questions about what spices were used in what dish, how they're cooked, how injera is made etc, and she answered everything! Such a nice little place to go to. If you've not had Ethiopian food before this would be a good start!

Our main for two plus one side dish, our other side dish came afterwards!

Really friendly staff and very tasty food. Between two of us we ordered samosas, a meal for two and two side dishes. We couldn't eat it all as there was so much but tried our best as it was so good. I've never had Ethiopian food before but I'd recommend it. Loved the traditional way of eating it without cutlery and using the pancake to pick the food up and eat it (although this means you eat even more and fill up quickly). We had a taste card do the food was 50% off - a bargain when it's already reasonable prices anyway!

Authentic etheopean food at reasonable prices with a very good service. It is definitely a good experience to try.

To correct the past negative reviews below about the poor service from last year...it's been rather resolved since. The service was graciously attentive, and the language barrier (if any) was minimal. There are also numbers on the menu if you should feel the need to go that route. Coming from LA--land of amazing Ethiopian options, I'd say it is quite comparable. Definitely authentic, definitely hefty portions, and definitely coming back.

    Honey wine

Visited with a friend and it was the first time we had tried Ethiopian food. We loved it. Got a meat a d veg combo to share, with honey wine and coffee afterwards. The food was very tasty, especially the injera and lamb stew. The food comes warm enough to handle with your hands, so don't expect it to be piping hot. It was a very relaxed atmosphere, so enjoy the slow pace of things. Would recommend a visit to anyone.

When we walked in....this dog lover seen a dog an was excited so I didn't realize the smell that the other two people I was with notice right away. It was a strange smell....that I can't put my nail on. After the dog lover excitement wore off I definitely smelt it. Fast forward we were not able to sit in as the owner stated she was going to close in an hour and 30 minutes and you could only do take away at that time. Was not happy about that but just went along with it. Placed out orders for a veggie platter and made sure the injera was gluten free. Walked next door to take a look while she was preparing our food for take away. Came back and the food was packed and ready. Oh and just a heads up they do take card and cash. If you have a US card her machine does take it even if she states she doesn't think it will. I did it and she was shocked lol. Food is packed and we leave. After getting back to our rooms and opening the food...that smell I was speaking about in the beginning we can all smell again. It was a unbearable smell that made it extremely difficult to eat the food. I was able to eat the injera and it really smelled and taste (maybe in my head) like the smell. I ate the veggies and even though it had a slight smell I was able to complete that but the injera was a BIG NO! All in all we could not figure out the smell. The owner was a sweet lady, but I wished she wouldn't have told us to take away as it took away from the experience. I wish I was able to give 5 stars like most folks...but I have to be honest with my experience.

Kokeb is the perfect example of a spot I would have never found without Yelp! Lost in the middle of an unknown neighbourhood (at least to me), Kokeb's street isn't precisely the busiest when it comes to restaurants. 18 amazing reviews and great Yelper pictures convinced me...and oh my this was a great lunch. I wanted to go for the lamb but Genetesh advised me to pick the N°21, "Spicy" beef with 1 injera and a local ethiopian beer to get it all down...perfect combo. Kokeb is all-in-one. Excellent ethiopian food comes together with the local decor & music...and Genetesh is there help you feel welcome, relaxed, at home...she'll also help you out if this is your first ethiopian experience (bye bye fork, hello right hand). A family run business with great taste & heart, and I love that.

Definitely not pretty or cozy. The staff was very friendly but unfortunately our server spoke incredibly quietly, so we had trouble understanding her over the loud music. We weren't sure what to order as neither of the four of us had ever tried Ethiopian. Our server tried to explain what/how to order, but we didn't really understand her, a combination of her English not being very clear and her speaking so quietly. We all just ended up ordering random dishes that sounded good and ran with it. The Injera, a large fermented pancake that is used to both serve the food on as well as pick it up with, was delicious! I loved the sour tangy taste it had. As we weren't aware that it was supposed to be a social sharing kind of dinner, we mostly just ate what we ordered without mixing dishes together. I did taste a bit of all dishes on the table though and everything was well spiced and very tasty. Don't let the size of the serving dishes fool you, combined with the injera, the servings are huge and very satisfying. Overall I really liked the experience but wish our server had done a better job of explaining the who style of dining beforehand. Will definitely try Ethiopian again, but probably not at this location.

Sure, no problem! We decided to walk back over for dinner & we were directed on where to sit & asked what we wanted to order. So, we told her what we had in mind from earlier. She returned within a few minutes with our platter for 2 & told us drinks are self-service. We started to eat and the food was good. I don't really have any complaints there. To me, the spices are very similar tasting to soul food, but just a healthy version of what soul food is. More than halfway through our meal, we were told they're a cash only establishment. This sent us into a little panic, because we weren't informed of this information before being served food. All we had on us was tap to pay, so of course imagine the predicament we were in when uninformed. We definitely wouldn't have stayed to eat had we known this information. We ended up having to get back to where we are staying to grab a debit card to go to an ATM and return again. I think just the misinformation for us, not so friendly service, and having to run around town to go grab cash is what put this right down the middle for me. Yes, the food was good... but, the experience felt a bit tarnished for me. Don't let it deter you from going to enjoy this spot... just BRING CASH. Save yourself the trouble.

Andu Cafe is amongst the best and the fact that all dishes are not just vegetarian but vegan is an added bonus! I used to live in East London a very long time ago but now only visit once or twice a month. This part of London is changing dramatically and Kingsland Road isn't spared from gentrification. Andu Cafe feels as if it has been here forever and reminds me of the old days ... ironically it is relatively new but blends in well with the multicultural vibe. The food is simple and the menu even simpler. You are encouraged to share a sampler consisting of six delicious vegetable dishes. The only decision you have to make is whether you would like these served with rice or injera, the traditional Ethiopian bread. I think they are BYO which makes me love the place even more as you often end up spending more on booze than on the food it is accompanying.

My starter was great, a fish salad with lots of tomatos and herbs, supposedly with a special Ethiopian herb mix. It tasted exactly like a British flaked fish salad. Not a bad thing by any means as it was great tasting, but didn't seem the most authentic flavour to me. My main was a mix of greens and beef which was highly recommended by Mesi herself - and it was just a bit...meh. Nothing outstanding, and actually I left half of it because it was just bland. My girlfriend (see Dom R's review) had the veggie mix which was a similar story. Bland and a bit uninspiring. I'm not sure if this was a one off as it has such good ratings elsewhere, but I'm going to be very cautious about when I next eat here. I think the only time I'll opt for it is for the lunch deal, which is about £5 for injerea + the veggie mix! A shame as it could be a great local, but I don't think it's that great!

The reason is the waiter/owner was grumpy and when I asked for a takeaway box for the moyin moyin he actually scowled! Wow. The moyin moyin is quite flavourful but the jollof rice is a real disappointment. I've had far better in Ghana. Two years ago: I popped into here for lunch around 1:30pm today and whilst the owner could have been friendlier in greeting me (a smile doesn't hurt ya know), I appreciated him coming outside the restaurant to hand me my takeaway food where I had waited in the lovely sun for my order. The interior is quite small with only a couple of tables with lovely African sculptures all around. There is chalkboard of specials along with the regular menu. Sadly the sweet potato balls were sold out so I got the moin moin and the spinach stew. All together less than a tenner. There are four pieces of moin moin, which are just deliciously savoury. I recommend eating them with the nonspicy spinach stew with melon seed, which, whilst not delicious, was tasty and filling. It would be perfect on a cold winter night. If I was in the area, I would return just for the moin moin!
