Chud's offers a hometown bar/grille experience that I wish I knew about when I lived in the area! Owned by a local family for generations, they seem to be a staple for the people of Fremont. Expect bar/grille fare at very reasonable prices. I had French onion soup on the cold day we visited, along with a regular burger and fries. The soup was very good, not too salty, but could have used a few more onions to make it perfect. The burger was spot on and the fries a great homemade addition. I also had the winter special drink, hot buttered rum. Boy am I glad so did - a warm, smooth addition it was! The only downside to our visit was that it took like 15 minutes before a waiter/waitress actually acknowledged our existence. It was packed full but a quick, we'll be right with you would have sufficed. If you are visiting the Hayes house, family, or just driving on by Fremont, this place is worth the detour! read more

Nice place, didn't know what to expect from the outside but was pleasantly surprised when I walked in. Bar looks great, bit of a bummer nothing is on tap, all cans and bottles. Ordered a couple of each flavor wing, I think the hot garlic parmesan was my favorite, though I would prefer if they were fried instead of baked, they were delicious anyway. Reuben was delicious, great bread and ratio of meats/sauerkraut/sauce. Turkey club was tasty as well but the bread got a bit soggy too quickly and made it tough to eat. Our server was fantastic, really made sure we were enjoying the meal, was very attentive and was generally a delight. Will definitely eat here again when I'm in the area. read more

Had lunch here today as part of a group of five. It was delicious and satisfying with excellent service. I had the Chud's Burger. It was good sized (1/3-1/2 pound patty) with several long strips of bacon. Two had a special -- ciabatta chicken sandwich -- which they said was excellent. It also came with waffle fries. Nice hometown bar and grill. I sat at the bar, so I received great service. The bartender recommended the chicken sandwich special....it was a breaded, chicken sandwich with tomato, lettuce and onion....it was delicious, although could have done without the lettuce. I was served cold beers promptly when one was emptied. I asked if they could change the channel to the football game....no problem! I was the last one there...no one rushed me out! It was a very pleasant evening with good food. It is not a sport bar, so don't expect that atmosphere. It is good food with good people. I will visit again when passing through. read more

So tonight I went to here for dinner with my friends. I have been here a few other times and there food is ok. It's not been horrible. Well today I went in and I ordered the Prime Rib special. Instead of getting this potato casserole that the waitress couldn't really tell me what was in it. I decided to get a baked potato. Well I got my salad and everything was ok. My friends got there food I did not. The waitress said it was due to an error in the kitchen. They gave me the casserole instead of the potato. Well I waited and I waited and I waited. My friends are there entire meal and I still did not have my Prime Rib special . Finally after my friends were done I got my meal. At this point I'm highly irritated. I am hungry after all. Then I get my meal after my friends ordered more fries and my potato was hard and I didn't even get sour cream. So needless to say I am not going back there again anytime soon. read more

Was passing through town and stopped here based on a few Yelp reviews. Inside was a little better than I expected. A bar is located in the center of the room surrounded by booths and tables. Nice and clean. I ordered the Lake Erie Perch sandwich. It doesn't come with any sides so I ordered the in-house, homemade potato salad. The fish was loaded with bones. I hardly touched it. The potato salad had mustard in the dressing and was very bland. Fifty shakes of pepper didn't help. I didn't tell the waitress about my experience because she never bothered to check back with me or ask me anything when she dropped off the check and the change. I noticed that the waitress let her ready orders wait while she tended to small talk, the register, or anything else. Big waste of $11.11. Water was my beverage. I usually tip very well. Left $1.00 which was still too much. Total loss: $12.11 read more

This is a place I plan on visiting again. It is a small restaurant with great food and friendly staff. I ordered the monthly special Georgia peach special. This was a grilled chicken sandwich smothered in grilled onion, cheese, peach salsa and bacon. This is a must to try if it is still the special when you come to try this place. I also ordered a cup of French onion soup. This soup has a complex beef broth flavor, I will be ordering this again. For dessert, I ordered the peanut butter pie, if you like Reece's peanut butter cups, this is a great pie for you (recommend to me by the bar tender). It isn't too sweet and has a nice peanut butter flavor. The (non-sweetened) ice tea is nice and strong. I am going to visit this again. read more

My favorite restaurant and watering hole in town in which I grew up. I first visited about 48 years ago. Then it was a place to drink 3.2 beer if we got off work at the Heinz company early. Now I get back to visit my mother a few times a year. Chud's is a great place for a sandwich. Fixings and bread are fresh and tasty. I always get the potato salad for a side. I do miss the bartender pulling out the vacuum cleaner when closing time came around. read more

Driving to and from Chicago to Philadelphia, we were SO tired of the chain restaurants and the terrible food. So, on our overnight stay in Fremont, I was determined to find a nice, non-chain, family owned restaurant. Like a light at the end of the tunnel, there it was... Chud's. So on Saturday night around 8pm, I gathered the kids in the car for the 7 mile drive from our hotel. We drove past Applesleeze, McDisgutings, Burger Sling, Taco Hell... we were not stopping. A bit of a mis-direction from our GPS, but we finally found it... It's a bit confusing at first because Chud's is both a restaurant and a store. If I remember correctly the restaurant entrance faces east; the store entrance faces west. We walked in and were surprised how small the place was; maybe 6 or 7 boothes and 7 or 8 tables, with a fairly large bar in the middle. You can eat at the bar if you don't want to wait; however with 3 kids, this wasn't an option. You can tell this is a neighborhood place, since once we walked in, almost every patron looked up and took a good scan of us. Once they determined we were unrecognizable, they went back to their eating. But almost everyone there who walked in either knew another patron or a fellow employee. Anyways, when we got there all seats were taken, but the waitress informed us that two groups were almost done and it shouldn't be more than a 10-15 minute wait. As she predicted, within 10 minutes a group left and we were seated. The menu had it's fair share of appetizers, soups, salad, sandwiches, entrees, etc.. Lot's to choose from. After much debate, I went with the Lake Erie Perch sandwich. I'm in Ohio, after all. The wife choose a special of the night, the "french dip" sandwich. The two kids chose a kids cheeseburger and kids hot dog dinner, respectively. Our server was very friendly, a bit quiet. When asked what kind of beers they served, he replied "Oh, almost any kind". Odd. My wife said, "how about Blue Moon?", and he said, "Oh yea, we got that". I, being in a small town in Ohio, didn't even need to ask; Budweiser, straight up. The food came out surprisingly fast for how crowded it was. The food: My wife's "french dip" sandwich; O..M..G. It was seriously one of the best beef-based sandwiches I have tasted; and who'd a thunk, here in the middle of Ohio. It consisted of "thinly sliced pieces of their prime rib" according to the waiter. You could tell they threw the slices of meat on the griddle to give it a quick crusting on some parts before serving. It melted in your mouth. With the melted cheese on top and the odd-looking but great-tasting bun, it was fantastic. My fried Perch sandwich was very good. The fish tasted very fresh, and I'd say there were 5 or so pieces between the two buns. The tarter sauce was good, and you could tell it was home made. Washing it down with a Bud, I was completely satisfied. I also took the liberty of tasting my sons cheeseburger, and it was very, very good! Usually the "kids" burger always seem to lack quality, maybe because they know they're serving it to kids. You could tell the meat was seasoned before they cooked it, and the "kids" portion was actually 1/4 pound! Needless to say, only being 4, he didn't finish the whole thing, but I definitely helped out. I cannot comment on my daughter's hot dog, but she said she "liked it". Also, the steak fries that came with my wife's sandwich were very good. If you get the "french dip", I highly recommend skipping the ketchup and dipping them in the "au jus" for a fantastic combination. The price of the food & drink was fair; not cheap but not expensive. If I remember correctly the tab for 3 beers and all our food was $45. So, if you've never been to the Fremont area and looking for a good home-cooked meal, come here. Do me a favor kids and skip those horrendous chain restaurants any chance you get. read more

We were in town visiting Hayes Presidential Museum so it was very convenient.... less than a mile away. It's a relaxed bar atmosphere but by all the stares as we walked in its a popular local spot. Staff was real friendly and waitress checked back plenty of times. We both had salads - larger one was good for my hubbie and lunch salad was smaller for me. Went to Chud's by yelp recommendation. Went in the side door thru the grocery store. The eatery is tiny but busy. We took that as a good thing hoping for a positive experience. Since the French onion was recommended, my husband got that plus a Reuben sandwich. I opted for a simple burger and fries. The waitress seemed to be running all the guests so she was busy. But not too busy for friendly small talk. The food was yummy and we tried the apple dumpling with ice cream. Like the entrees it was yummy. Since my fries came late they were taken off the bill. Sodas were from a can and I don't know if a second would have been free since the waitress did not come back to ask about refills. All in all a good experience and if you are visiting the RBHayes presidential museum it is a good place to break for lunch. read more
