I hadn't been since I was a kid, so I was excited to visit again. For the most part, a lot was the same as I remember and I was excited to show the kids. There were a few new things too, which was cool. We didn't get a chance to do the planetarium ($5 on the free third Thursdays) nor the giant screen theater (also $5). Next time, I for sure want to take my son inside the planetarium because it was my most favorite thing as a kid. Hopefully, he'll love it too. As an adult, the museum definitely seems a bit random and there's not a whole lot that's interesting (unless you're a huge science/history fan). Overall, the kids enjoyed themselves and that's all that matters.

As a huge fan of Meow Wolf, I was so excited for BVO! I'm equally excited to see Mud Island being…read morebrought back to life in such a unique way. They've done an exceptional job with it and we had a blast. If you are unfamiliar, it is an immersive fantasy-like steampunk experience. It feels something like a "go at your own pace, choose your own adventure" escape room without the stress of escape room vibes. You go through different rooms and exhibits - and are free to push, pull, open, climb through, etc. to find the secrets of BVO. You can also try to find all of the hidden artifacts (scan points) - which is a fun way to compete with friends (or by yourself - trying to find them all was a ton of fun!). A few notes for the early months of the exhibit opening: 1: the full exhibit is not open, only phase 1. This means it is quite a bit shorter/smaller, and doesn't take too terribly long to get through. On one hand, it will be fun to continue returning as they open new phases to get all new experiences each time. On the other hand, especially if you've been to Meow Wolf, it does feel noticeably incomplete/phase 1. 2: They've posted a ton of photos on their website and even here on yelp of areas that are locked behind future phases. Thus, at this time - you will NOT see the riverboat and some of the other exhibits. They really should be more clear as to what is actually open right now. 3: It is new and they are working out the kinks, so our wristband scanners didn't work quite right and our final "artifact" count was off because we couldn't get some of them to scan properly. 4: last thing - when googling, be careful of spoilers! I imagine as this gains momentum, people are going to post all the secrets, which could make it less fun for the adventurer. Overall, I highly recommend visiting, though you should manage your expectations in the early phase. Please go support this awesome, local, new venue! And enjoy the park, the Memphis sign, and such while you are there;)

Right now only Phase 1 is open but it's really neat and the whole phase could probably take you up to an hour if you want to find all of the scan points. You can exit and enter again after checking what percentage of quests/challenges you have completed. I recommend wearing long pants / clothes and shoes you can crawl, climb and slide in. This interactive experience is really cool and has a lot of "hidden" areas that are neat to find. Well done, well made & highly recommend going, especially when all the phases will be complete!!!

The first things I noticed after I sat down in the Sharpe Planetarium were the giant,…read morebarbell-shaped machine in the center of the room and the dozens of projectors circling the room. That, and the disco balls. Sadly, the disco balls weren't used during the presentation of "Bear Tales and Other Grizzly Stories". The lights dimmed, and I leaned back and watched as the star machine and projectors flashed the night sky onto the planetarium's domed ceiling. The current program at the planetarium is about a family looking at the night sky and telling the stories behind some of the most well-known constellations. The current show, "Bear Tales and Other Grizzly Stories", is about 30 minutes long and completely family friendly (it closes with a singalong, too). Following the regular program, Planetarium Supervisor David Maness projected some images of the night sky as seen from Memphis onto the ceiling and pointed out where common constellations are located. He also mentioned that currently (as in, tonight) Venus, Mars, and Saturn will all be visible, though, to the naked eye, they'll just look like extra bright stars. The Sharpe Planetarium has been open inside the Pink Palace Museum since 1979. Currently, there are 16 public and school group shows in the planetarium every week, and usually a few special private shows (the planetarium can be rented for the evening). The planetarium's shows change about every three months, which keeps them seasonally appropriate - the constellations that are in the spring are different from the ones that appear in the fall. The planetarium has shows every week, Tuesday - Saturday. Admission is separate from regular museum admission, but it's a bargain at $4.50 for adults and $4 for kids.

The building sits right by the Mississippi River, like it knows it's got the best view in town. We stepped out of the car and were immediately greeted by none other than Elvis Presley himself--or at least a very confident bronze version of him. Nearby? B.B. King, mid-strum. I hadn't even picked up a brochure yet and was already planning a full-on Memphis playlist. Inside, the place was spotless. Cool air, clean restrooms, and a staff so friendly they made us feel like we were long-lost cousins just coming back to visit. One of the ladies behind the desk insisted on handing us "everything we might need"--maps, coupons, and a cheerful rundown of what not to miss in the city. She even offered to take our picture with Elvis. I didn't say no. Out back, the view of the river was unreal. Bridges stretched across the water, sun glinting off every ripple. People were sitting on benches, sipping drinks from vending machines and watching the barges roll by like slow-moving giants. We were only supposed to stop for five minutes. We stayed for almost forty. Five stars, no question. The Tennessee Welcome Center doesn't just welcome you--it invites you to fall in love with Memphis before you even get to the first stoplight.
