My friends and I came here on a Saturday afternoon. We spent about an hour and a half going through the museum and gardens. While we visited (during Feb '26), the museum was hosting an exhibit on Black Artisfs in America. We thought the curation was incredible and really enjoyed it. The rest of the museum is quite small and has some impressionist work from Monet, Renoir, etc. The best part? Admission is free!

The Dixon Gallery & Gardens is a beautiful destination for a day trip with family and friends, offering to be immersed in artwork and peaceful outdoor spaces. Stroll through a well-kept flower garden that leads into a shaded trail, perfect for enjoying fresh air and nature with loved ones. I recommend setting aside 2-3 hours to explore both the indoor art galleries and the flower garden and trail. The gardens are immaculate--ideal for taking family portraits or just a serene escape from the city. Inside, you'll find two main painting galleries: a temporary gallery which currently features the Susan Watkins collection from the Chrysler Museum of Art and the permanent oil paintings collection. I especially enjoyed the works of Susan Watkins, a highly regarded painter from San Francisco. Housed in a beautifully preserved colonial manor, the Dixon Gallery & Gardens stands out as my top choice for its blend of art, history, and natural beauty. Best of all, admission is free, and there's plenty of parking. Enjoy your trip to Dixon!

There have been so many good days at the Dixon. My family loves killing an afternoon here. There are not many places you can visit that have such nice grounds and artwork on display that are completely free to the public. How cool is that?!?!? I remember paying at some point, but not in several years. Gotta love free! You can just walk the gardens and discover the hidden trails and beautiful art throughout the gorgeous grounds. At every turn you will find beautiful trees, shrubs, and flowers in the spring and summer. There is a beautiful rose garden with tons of other flowing plants near the greenhouses as you walk in. It's always nice to see all of the bees grazing haphazardly. In the fall and winter months you can see a completely different environment with all of the fall foliage and occasional snow that we get here in the Mid South. Inside the main building are some seasonal changing art galleries with some permanent installations. The seasonal usually is collaborative and themed by a particular artist. The people are all very nice. I like the Park & Cherry concept inside. Neat little cafe. Lots of things to read. They have a nice event center out in the gardens with a covered party space. We have accidentally walked through some wedding photos and parties before. Ooops. So glad that it here for the Memphians to enjoy. I do appreciate the space. It's like you aren't even in the city when you are in the center of the park. It's so serene. '25 - 58/111

We went to see the tulips and they were beautiful! It's free, which is a plus in and of itself. I keep meaning to go more often because of this value. The staff were great with questions. We saw tulips during a busy time and were still able to get good photos. Memphis is lucky to have this free outdoor space for sure!

I visited Dixon Gallery & Gardens in March 2025, approximately one month ago while visiting Memphis. Great museum and garden experience. They have beautiful world class art and sculpture on display. I particularly liked the Rodin sculpture outside of the gallery entrance. The gardens are lovely. I believe that this place had more spring flowering bulbs by a big margin than the nearby Memphis Botanical Garden. Very impressive. Easy to get to by car. Lots of parking. Beautiful grounds. Best of all it is free admission. Clean bathrooms inside the gallery and museum space. They have a cafe on site but I did not visit the cafe. I would come back here for sure if I lived in Memphis. Great place to visit while traveling in the Memphis area. Dixon Gallery & Gardens gets a solid five stars from me.

the 'crowd' at the event I had to wait to order food for

rude staff last time i was there - i just went to go but there was an event going on that i didn't even know about - even though online it said food was available all of the regular opening times i had to wait until the event started which was fine but stayed for the event and it was very few people there - so sad from what it used to be

I went here to get some quiet time to myself, but it is also a wonderful place for families, dates, or friend groups! The grounds are beautiful and it is FREE year-round.

I have loved the Dixon gallery for years :) it is free for all visitors throughout 2024. My favorite is the residential exhibits. The wall colors, mantles, rugs, and furniture feel so rich and like I am stepping back in time. The garden is especially vibrant and peaceful to walk through

We brought our kids here for the tulip gardens and it was so beautiful. Even took pictures for our daughter's first Easter pics.! We must go back when we have ample amount of time to browse around. The best part is that it's FREE..!!!

It is definitely worth seeing, especially while admission remains free! The gardens were unique and enjoyable, providing about 30 minutes to an hour for most (depending on speed and admiring time). The gallery was especially quaint, as only one exhibit (of a maximum of two) was on display; with that said, the artist's work was wonderful. The gallery also includes a coffee shop to get refreshments and at least one friendly cat prowls the gardens.

I was able to visit the Dixon Gallery and Gardens today while at a private event. Our group focused on the Black Artist in America and the paintings were beautiful yet amazing. I loved how the focus is set on the Great Depression up until the Civil Rights. We were told to expect two more exhibits (2023, 2025) that'll provide more insight into Black America. I can't wait to be able to view it! I did take a few photos but wanted to be respectful and live in the moment of these wonderful paintings. Being that admission is free through the rest of the year (possibly longer) I will definitely return to view more exhibits and the gardens!

Very wonderful exhibit and the gardens are beautiful on a sunny day. I imagine it's more exciting during summer months when the plants can get the most sunlight. All areas may not be wheelchair accessible as an FYI. They serve food here as well but only lunch, which I think ends at 2 or 3 pm.

Our guide was very funny and knowledgeable (and he's a musician to boot!). We did the tour and the upstairs part has a recreation of the Dewey O DJ booth which is very cool. There is even a "smash" hit record on the floor in the booth! Inside museum cases are some original equipment and posters, etc. of some of the greats signed by Sun Studio. The downstairs recording studio (still in use daily) is timeless with an original microphone and the piano that the greats once played while recording. . We got to pose with the microphone and see lots of real equipment actually used by the likes of Elvis, Sam Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, etc. And of course, some of the original recording equipment used by founder Sam Phillips. The gift shop and small bar up front are a great touch both before and after the tours. Don't miss this legendary place.

For anyone who finds this post, a mere speck amidst an ocean of reviews, I need you to understand…read moresomething. This is one of the greatest tours I've ever taken! For context, you have to comprehend that I've visited 82 countries, all seven continents, and countless museums and historic sites around the globe! I don't bestow these compliments lightly, because the unfortunate side effect of all that travel is that I've become almost impossible to impress. But on a rainy Saturday afternoon while walkin' in Memphis, I strolled into Sun Studio for the first time, a place I'd never visited despite a half century of living in Tennessee. It was long overdue! I entered at 10:15 a.m. shortly after the studio opened, showed my voucher that I had purchased on their website, and signed up for the 10:30 a.m. tour. And it's one of the best things I've EVER seen on all my travels which is saying something!! You can feel the spirit of rock and roll here, expertly told by our guide Krista! It really gets in your soul once you listen to the stories, hear the musical excerpts, and realize the hallowed ground upon which you stand. What other museums in Memphis lack, Sun Studio more than makes up for with just one upstairs room of exhibits that are pivotal to the development of modern music. I won't give everything away so that you're motivated to take the tour yourself. But you'll learn how Sam Phillips founded the record studio, how a broken guitar in Mississippi led to the birth of a revolutionary sound, the legendary bands who recorded here and those who were inspired by the record label. Don't miss the original neon sign from Sun Studio and a radio station set rescued from an abandoned hotel! And of course, you'll learn how a teenaged Elvis pad a few dollars for a recording session, and the employee who vouched for him before Sam Phillips realized he was the future of music! You'll also see the active studio downstairs where hundreds of legendary acts have recorded, where the same floor and acoustically designed ceiling haven't changed since the '50s! Even the same microphone that recorded all of these icons still stands in the room, perfect for tourist photo ops! Please take this tour in your lifetime!! Don't wait as long as I did!!

The experience is much more polished, and the opening film about Elvis makes his legacy easy to appreciate even if we didn't grow up knowing much about him. There are also more exhibits now, and we could tell they've invested a lot into improving it. Only downside: a really mean staff member outside the ticket area who stopped us and questioned our ticket choice quite aggressively, insisting there was no such thing as a "basic" ticket. As the person who has visited three times before, I had to explain that I meant the most basic tier they offer and then finally she let me go. It felt rude and a bit disrespectful, especially since the other staff members were so nice and welcoming. Still a great experience overall, just wish the front-line service matched the rest.
