Before Cordova was became an eastern extension of Memphis, it was its own place; a cute little town…read morecentered around a tiny train station, way out in the county. And while much of old Cordova is gone, there's one place where you can get your small-town fix. The small museum fills up one room (and a small annex) in the Cordova Community Center. Since the building housed the Cordova School from the early 1900s until the mid-1970s, much of the museum's limited space is given to a model classroom. After the school was closed, the county stored all of the old school fixtures in the building, which means that much of what you can see in the Cordova Museum is authentic to the school. There are musty books, old sports jerseys, photos of the first graduating class (three people), sheet music from the glee club, school picture day proofs and a binder full of graded writing assignments (mostly nature poetry) from the 1950s. The most impressive thing about the Cordova Museum, though, is its collection of photographs and archives from the town's history dating back to roughly 1860. And unlike many museums, the Cordova Museum's staff of one, Cordova native Darlene Hooker Sawyer, can tell you the names (and often the backstories) of every single person in the photographs. If you grew up in Cordova and ever participated in any Fourth of July parades, crafts fairs or halloween events at the Community Center, there's a high liklihood that your picture is in one of the binders in the Museum. Since my mom insisted that we participate in just about every single Cordova event, I was able to find a photo of my childhood best friend and I dressed up in ridiculous homemade red white and blue bunting dresses from an early 90s Independence Day parade. The Cordva Museum is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Admission is free, and they've also got free access to ancestrty.com from the museum computers.

We got there about noon and parked .81 miles away from the entry point on the south side by the Tabernacle. When we left at 4:00 or so, the streets were lined miles further away than we were. It was really kind of crazy how many where there. I am sad to say I didn't find a damn thing other than food and beer to buy this year. Not a damn thing. I already have all of the shit that peaked my interest. My wife did want a painting for my kid, but hesitated and said she would come back for it. When we got back, it was gone and she was bummed. We talked to the artist about commissioning a new piece, so maybe. It was the best piece of art in the festival. I should have just bought it myself when we liked it. I'll be back next year, hope someone with some nice art will tempt me. Just a heads up, snack wise.... Stick Em' food truck and Butterific cookies for the win no matter m what here. For real.

The place sold sodas in tin mugs with unlimited refills. We bought the barrel mug for 15 bucks and we probably refilled it 6-7 times. Easily got my money back with those refills. The Pink Palace Family of Museum aka @MemphisMuseums has true Memphis treasures that are wonderful…read morefor both adults and children. My latest discovery? The Magevney House - a pre-Civil War house in the heart of downtown Memphis! Truth be told, I have been trying to see this place for months now. My current obsession is Memphis history and this house/family has been mentioned in multiple books I've read. The museum is only open the first Saturday each month from 1pm-4pm so you've got to plan ahead...and I've had conflict after conflict. Fortunately this Saturday worked...even though I had to go after riding my horse and smelled pretty bad when I went. (Side note: The staff was super friendly even though I looked like a hot mess.) Anyways, while admission is free, they recommend a $2 per adult donation at the end of the tour. I beg of you, please donate! This Memphis history needs to be preserved (and stay open to the public). Here is a little history so you know what you're getting into! The house was built in 1833 and is now one of the city's oldest remaining residences. It was a middle-class home and currently furnished in an 1850s styling. And while there are only 4 rooms that you see (you don't go upstairs), I really enjoyed that many of the furnishings were the actual possessions of the Magevney family...and were in the same room/place. Sometimes I forget that Memphis is such an old city. There is just not much history like this left here! And for that reason alone (even though there are many), you should certainly hurry on over there to check it out!!

Walked right up to the ticket booth and hubby and I both being military was able to get in for $5 each. Security checked us in with ease (no drama) and I got to bring in my small Spider-Man umbrella (I don't do direct sunlight) which totally made my day. We had two friends with us and we don't ride anything but we love to walk around, people watch, eat, laugh, eat, talk to the vendors, eat more. The setup was excellent. Indoor vendors (not a lot) but they all had some great prices on their items. We had fun talking and I think hubby got talked into buying something for the tv! Lol! We had a nice cool area to sit down in with huge tables and chairs where we ate our fried bologna sandwich (oooh sooo good) and fried oreos (ooh even better)! This fair is quite a bit smaller than the Delta Fair but we all agreed that we liked this one better because we had a chance to walk around without the crowds and the food was still good. The kids that were here early were able to ride without standing in line. We didn't have to wait in line for food or the bathrooms. Oh and speaking of the bathrooms-you might want to bring your own wipes, paper, sanitizer or whatever you use. I keep an arsenal of stuff with me so I'm good but the bathrooms were not as clean as they could have been. Other than that everything was great. At around 2 we started to leave as the crowd started moving in which worked out great. We will definitely return next year.

There is a tour guide (retired firefighter) to lead visitors through the first half of the museum and answer questions. Older children and adults will find this part of the museum interesting, but what makes the Memphis Fire Museum exceptional is the second half, where children are free to explore a completely interactive room of fire truck and ambulance vehicles. On the second floor there is a fire simulator where visitors can watch (and feel the heat!) from a simulated house fire. On a Tuesday around 1pm, we pretty much had the museum to ourselves. I'm sure this isn't always the case, but frankly all of Memphis felt a little abandoned. It appears as though the city hasn't yet recovered post-COVID. We paid $46 for our family of 8 to visit the museum (but the baby was free) and I think it was worth every penny. I'm not sure how impressed a group of adults would be with the museum, but it's worth a trip for anyone with kids. Do go!
