Alex Labrador, who is Filipino, started giving salsa lessons and it grew into Salsa Memphis. Salsa Memphis is lucky to have Edgar Mendez, originally from LA as an instructor. Now, Salsa Memphis offers plenty of opportunities for people to try it. You can opt for lessons at their dance studio on mt. moriah. The lessons are about a hour to a hour and half and are $12 a lesson or you can buy a pack of 4 lessons for 40 bucks. Beginner lessons are on Mondays. You do need to wear shoes that have slick ,smooth soles so it will be easier to spin. Also, I would recommend a towel because you will work up quite a sweat. The first part of the lesson is usually individual footwook where the basic steps are reviewed. Edgar breaks it down slowly so everyone understands the steps. Then he will use the steps to make a dance routine. The dance routine will actually help you because you use the steps learned in your routine with a partner. As for partners, you initially select a partner but then you will stand in a circle and rotate. Therefore, you learn to dance with different people--some who will have more salsa skills than others. All in all, it is quite a workout. If you want to see what salsa lessons will result in, go to High Point Cafe in the Pinch on Saturday night about 11pm. All the advanced dancers are there and they put on quite a show. You can go earlier and get a free beginner salsa lesson with your 6 dollar admission (it will be $10 if there is a live band). Mostly, they play salsa, meringue and bachata music. People who salsa are quite diverse in size, shape, and nationalities and they are all very nice to beginners. The current production is hairspray, in which my son plays a great part and the school is really wonderful. If you want $100 New York production for $15 I would go to this school every time they have a show which is twice a year. Germantown high school also has a full TV production studio which errors on cable TV. I think you'd be missing out on some of the best young talent in Memphis if you did not go see shows that are produced here. I have lived in Germantown for 10 years, and my sons have all attended Germantown high school. I really can't believe no one has actually reviewed this program. The staff teachers and supporters make this program A 100% truly exponential program. Next time you want to see something really fantastic go to the Germantown high school a.k.a. Drinks were water, tea and lemonade. The lemonade was terrible. Way too much water in it. Thankfully had seats in the shade and stayed for 7 innings. The Redbirds postponed their game to the following day. But there was no way we could stay in Memphis an extra day, especially not on Easter Sunday when we had plans back home. Attempting to get a refund, or at least a credit so we could come back at a later date to watch the Redbirds, they flat out refused to help us. We were told that if we couldn't come back on Easter Sunday, we've just lost those tickets. DO NOT buy tickets to an event at AutoZone Park, lest the event be cancelled or moved only for you to lose your money. It's a serious gamble, especially if you're driving a long distance only to receive nothing in return.

We had about 15 people but were each tended to individually by the individual staff members who helped us construct our masterpieces. The studio was in someone's house....like in a huge basement. This added to the intimacy of the event. We were allowed to bring food for our festivities too. It really felt like a great combo of cozy comforting setting and fabulous service. My recommendation....forget the big business studios and give this business a try. Art is personal and thats exactly what this studio delivers! Pros: great service, helpful staff, very personal, spacious place, can bring refreshments, everyone got to choose their own picture, they played music from pandora while we painted, good pricing!
