Elizabeth Anne Brown has not only taught them to be amazing dancers, but she has instilled in them self esteem, confidence, poise, respect for others, and self-discipline. My daughters always know how to conduct themselves, whether it be for an audition, or for a job or college interview, a presentation at school, or a speech. Elizabeth Anne Brown and her staff not only have trained my girls in the art of dance, but they have been trained for life! Many thanks to Performing Arts of Germantown.

Now in its 56th year, the studio prides itself on providing the highest quality dance education--Ballet, Pointe, Jazz, Lyrical, Tap, Modern and Hip Hop--as well as stage presence, acting and pageant preparation. Thanks to the combination of excellent training and Ms. Brown's emphasis on traditional values like hard work, dedication, team work, commitment and attention to detail, her students consistently win top awards in competitions, earn college dance scholarships and go on to perform professionally. While those accomplishments are impressive, perhaps the strongest testament to how special it is to "grow up" at Performing Arts is that former students bring their children (and grandchildren!) here to continue the tradition. Showcasing many known Productions like The Wizard of Oz Annie & The Hobbit just to name a few. These plays have always been well produced & well casted thanks to their director & his crew who always have kept the show going smoothly. The props & backdrops were were well designed & crafted. The backdrops I found most impressively designed were the backdrops for Wizard of Oz when they were doing the scene with The Munchkins. The props just added a great realism to the scene they were design to be used in. The lighting is fair for a fair for a small town theather as I wouldn't expect the same quality you'd find at the Orpheum or GPAC. Their sound system is adequate & I can hear each performers lines & the music with clarity. As I said kept simple & not sacrifing in the way of ticket prices. Low ticket prices & while keeping great quality in productions is a key to this Performing Arts Center success next to their casting dm& play director. I do admit they could use better seating it offers some decient comfort unlike other places who offer better comfort to enjoy a long production. But let Harrell Theatre wow you with their new production of Steel Magnolis coming in February. Enjoy the show. At the time Justin Timberlake's little brother Jonathan was one of my students as well and I remember he took to dance really well. I taught 3 to 4 classes a day from 8 years old to the teenagers and a mommy class on Fridays. Those were the good ole days in Memphis, but if you're ever in Germantown and you have the need to get your dance on please go to this studio.

Each spring, students work together and put on a big recital, for which parents have to stand in line to buy tickets. Costumes, production, the whole shebang. Rehearsals are daily the week prior to the program. Every other week of the school year, students attend a weekly class. The little ones take in the downstairs classrooms, accessed either through a back door (which they don't want anyone using when weather is cold, because it puts a chill on the downstairs studios), or through the painfully tight upper lobby and down a set of metal spiral stairs. When classes change, this is a truly hectic scene. I've started just dropping my 3 year old daughter in the lobby to walk herself down, because the stairs make me so nervous! In the changing area/restroom, something is always broken or out of order. The big dance area upstairs is a beautiful space, with plenty of room, great windows, and the tweens and teens seem to take their classes up there. The little girls are allowed to wear whatever leotard they like to classes, as long as they have appropriate dance shoes and purchase the tap shoes provided by the studio (they must all match for the show). Hair is to be up in a bun when possible, and not in a bow. When we came to join the studio in the fall, we may have caught the staff at a bad time. Miss Deborah, the dance teacher for the little ones, had just driven to Chicago and then lost her phone while she was up there. I never could get anyone on the phone from the actual studio, and have not been able to get much information from them via email. Your best bet is just to come into the studio between 4-5:30 one afternoon, to get information in person. It sounds from this review that it is a terrible place, but my daughter *adores* her hour-long ballet class, Miss Deborah, and the other little ballerinas. As long as she continues to enjoy it, we'll keep her enrolled. Maybe someday they'll expand, or get a bigger space. Until then, keep handing out the stickers, and we'll keep paying!

Well, I wish there was a way to review individual shows, but I guess that doesn't make sense since…read morethe productions are temporary. So, I will comment on the venue itself up here and place a block below for specific shows and will update that block whenever I see a new one! I'll put the run dates in the title line so you know whether or not to pay attention to it. Venue Review My wife and I absolutely love live theater and I think we've been to most of the theater venues in Memphis. We've seen many productions at the Playhouse on the Square and it is just a fabulous place to see a play, or even the ballet. It is not a huge venue so when I say, "There isn't a bad seat in the house." that is dead on. The seating is comfortable. The facilities are clean. The staff is always nice. And the productions are always top-notch! One thing about Playhouse and its surrounding theaters is the pricing for their shows is usually very reasonable compared to the competing theater across town. We always come in from the North, down Central and usually, we park in the parking garage near the square itself. This last time it was raining and we noticed there is actually a parking lot on the East side of the building! It is a nice parking lot and it is, of course, a much shorter walk than the walk from the garage! However, if you plan to eat before or after a show, the garage might be a better choice. Production Reviews Below Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - 1/19-2/18/2024 I am a HUGE fan of the 1971 film, Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, starring Gene Wilder (who isn't, right?). I think we all would like to forget the 2005 remake of the story with J. Depp, so to say I'm dubious when it comes to the treatment of this story is probably an understatement. Knowing I am such a fan of this story, my wife surprised me with tickets to this show. I've never seen it done live and I was excited but trepidatious because some of the stuff I loved about the 1971 movie, the special effects, the sets, just couldn't be duplicated on a live stage. That said, because I knew that going, in I was a bit forgiving and might have been a little excited to see how they adapted it. I was not disappointed one bit! Of course, the main storyline was the same, but there were nuances of modernization. The names of the children were the same and the core of their bad behavior too. However, their backstories and the style of their ultimate demises were slightly different. I won't give critical details away as I don't want to spoil it for you, but just as an example, Mike Teevee's problem is still sitting in front of a screen too much, but his addiction is to the Internet and video games rather than classic television. Clever. The young star of the show, Drake Shehan, was incredible and an absolute delight to watch! The young man could sing, and dance, and his acting quality was that of someone 10 years his senior! The rest of the cast was great as well, just a super ensemble. This was one of the best shows we've seen at Playhouse and they did a fantastic job of adapting this to the stage. You have a little more than a week to catch this and you should before it is gone!

The TSC's production of Macbeth is worth your time!…read more We saw Macbeth on 10/25/18 [and will probably go again next week]. The pacing of the play was expertly brisk; the blocking kinetic and attractive; and the small size of their new theatre puts the audience right on the edge of the action--and on the edge of your seat. The music provided by the onstage musicians was evocative and beautifully expressive. We loved the choices made about the wyrd sisters--but I won't spoil that for you...When I first learned that the staging was to be set in the original Elizabethan period I was a bit disappointed-- I was hoping for a surprising [yet relevant] setting in a different historical period. But after Dan McCleary's introduction, the setting choice was made clear and meaningful to me and my friends. BTW I also enjoyed their Midsummer Night's Dream at the U of M campus a few summers ago. Their staging, live music, and bayou setting was eerily magical. I ended up going twice to see that one. The TSC is worthy of your support, I hope the company grows and receives an outpouring of local support for their theater renovation; productions; and educational program plans. P.S. Seat cushions available for a dollar and are very comfy. The temperature of the theatre is a little chilly, so bring a sweater, cool people.
