I'm sorry to say I was very disappointed in the new theme of The Nutcracker. Compared to the old…read moreclassic version the new one is just too modern. If someone had never seen the old version and went to it for the first time, they could easily grasp and follow the story. This new version does not make any sense. I mean really... replacing the Russian with peppermint sticks? Is this a Candyland theme? Sometimes change is not good when you are dealing with a classical ballet. As always, the orchestra was spectacular, as worthy lead dancers. However, I'm thinking Ballet Memphis Just doesn't have the talent it used to. So many of the dancers aren't even en pointe anymore! My 17 year old granddaughter has been attending the nutcracker since she was three years old, and says this 2025 is the last time she will ever attend unless the old version is brought back. It seems like everything has been cheapened, for lack of a better word. Even the costumes! The dancers' even lack emotion. Like many people I know I am so sorry this has happened to such a classical performance that people anticipated seeing each year

Ballet Memphis is such a treasure!…read more When they moved to Overton Square, they truly became an anchor for our performing arts district. I can't make it through the holidays without The Nutcracker and I really appreciate how they recorded the play and donated it to Memphis during the pandemic. I'm at the point where I know the dancers on sight and know their special gifts. I took a tour of the space before COVID-19 changed our lives. I love how you can see the dancers practicing from the street through the massive glass windows. They have dance school, community dance classes and a studio for pilates classes. I copied and pasted their class offerings: -Classical Ballet Training -Expanded Dance -Youth Ballet Memphis -Boys at Ballet Memphis -Community Dance -Summer Dance -Ballet Memphis Pilates -STOTT PILATES® Certification -Adult Ballet -Expanded Dance They have group mat and equipment classes for all levels, Total Barre™, Active for Life, bodyART™, Total Body Conditioning, and specialty clinics. Also, private and semi-private training. The costume shop is insanely amazing, you can also rent one of four studios and there's a business meeting rental space with high-speed fiber internet, teleconferencing and other features. They'll bring in caterers, table rentals and valet parking.

Let me start with saying I am horrible dancer. This place is great for all levels of people. The…read moreowner and staff are professional but fun. They do a great job on making you feel welcomed. I would say this is a great place to learn or have date night.

I did Zumba today. ME! Erica B! I did an hour long class of Zumba. I know, you're thinking hell,…read moredoes she want a medal? Well let me inform you- I am the single most uncoordinated gal on the planet. I dance like Elaine on Seinfeld- actually she puts me to shame. I've been known to trip over lines in the sidewalk, carpeting that is too thick and run into walls without any given notice. Yes, I did Zumba. I was never aware of what this actually entailed, but was always slightly curious, though obviously not enough to warrant checking it out. A friend told me about the classes at Midtown Dance Studio, conveniently located in Minglewood Hall and within walking distance of my house. All this and only $7 bucks? ($40 unlimited all month- and they have weekday classes as well. Freaking steal!) There were no excuses. I agreed to go this morning. I foolishly researched a video of it a mere 30 minutes before leaving my house and almost backed out. This requires some serious rhythm. Which the dear Lord decided not to gift me. I put on my big girl panties, sucked it up and showed up for the 10 am class. Cue the warm up. Hey, this isn't so bad. I can keep up! Perhaps those videos I watched were advanced! Look at me go! I'm keeping up with the instructor. Next song, not as easy. Okay, I'm just out of shape. I just had a baby, it's hot in here. I can keep going with some minor adjustments to this crazy foot work. Two songs later, asking my friend for the time. We've gotta be close to wrapping this shit up. 10:22?!?!? WHAT?! Okay, I can do this. I can't breathe- but it's all good. Fake it till you make it! Oh, that lady in front of me is pausing. Good. I'll just go grab my water bottle. Whoa! What is going on with the footwork here? I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror. I look like a lame horse or perhaps a donkey. Cue the incessant laughing by me and the little boy who was drug to the class by his mother. I can't stop laughing. I'm burning more calories laughing than shaking my hips. Is it just me or do parts of Zumba remind you of the dance Patrick Dempsey does at prom in Can't Buy Me Love? Laughing uncontrollably again. Cool down! Ahh yes. This wasn't bad. I was actually quite good. I can do this again next week! Judging by the extreme lack of rhythm going on in my class that thought process has to be pretty similar in everyone's head. Otherwise this place would be empty. If your excuse is that you think you'll make a fool of yourself- screw it. I just made a fool out of myself for the both of us and then some. It was fun. I enjoy laughing at myself- and really points to anyone for showing up and trying. I'll definitely be back- though I'll be having meetings with Billy Blanks in my living room this week to try and build up some stamina. That shit is rough yo!
