I was not previously aware of Dr. Earnest C. Withers and his iconic photographs documenting the Civil Rights Movement, but when I poked my head in to check it out, I immediately knew it was worth an in-depth look and I beckoned my traveling companion (a talented photographer in his own right) to join me in stopping by. As I previously mentioned, though I never heard of Withers, I quickly realized that I've seen some of his most famous photos in other museums, documentary films, and history books. Beyond those few examples, I was impressed by the hundreds of photographs capturing both important figures and events in the Civil Rights Movement. Withers was a truly talented photographer with unprecedented access to people and events, and a great eye for capturing frames that tell an important story. I'd recommend stopping in whether it's "Pay Whatever Day" or not. I was happy to make a generous contribution. (BTW -- you can see more of Withers' work at the National Civil Rights Museum -- another five star venue -- reviewed separately).

Crosstown Arts is a free gallery within the Concourse that features temporary exhibits. When we visited, we were blown away by an exhibit: "Give a Damn! Music + Activism at Stax Records." The exhibit featured artifacts (including Isaac Hayes's office desk and outfits worn on stage by Stax artists like Johnnie Taylor and Isaac Hayes), music, rare photos, and original artwork created by Shelby County middle school students. It was interesting and of great local interest! A very well laid out exhibit. If we lived in Memphis, I'd certainly make it a point to read up about their exhibits as they open and to visit any of those that interested me! Wonderful visit!

The gallery is beautiful, and the artwork on display is absolutely stunning. One of the highlights of our visit was spending time listening to Andre Miller share stories about the artwork and the people behind it. His storytelling is engaging, entertaining, and filled with humor. You'll find yourself laughing, learning, and wishing you had been there to experience the moments he describes firsthand. The Robert Johnson Delta Bluesman Series is truly amazing and a must-see for anyone who appreciates art, music history, and Memphis culture. During our visit, the artist and his wife were busy preparing for an upcoming Father's Day and Juneteenth weekend celebration at the gallery. I'm looking forward to returning for the festivities, which will include an open mic event and a Champagne Sunday gathering. If you're ever in downtown Memphis, I highly recommend stopping by Gallery Albertine. Don't miss the opportunity to experience this special place before it closes. Current gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Gallery Albertine is a hidden gem that celebrates art, culture, history, and community in a truly memorable way.
