3 stars because the food is good. Our problem is you drive to Clancy and out of the blue it's closed even though their site says they're open. Please Chubbys come up with an answering machine or something that says you aren't open because workers didn't show up, Etc. We showed up tonight to celebrate wedding anniversaries and met a gal celebrating an 80th birthday and the doors were locked and no one answered the phone. Their Grilled Prime Rib is about as good as it gets for a plate of beef. It is served after the weekend Prime Rib Special if there is any left over. Monday is your best bet to land this beauty (see note). We usually call ahead to make sure it is available. We have done this more than once and are always ecstatic with the result. It stays moist and pink in the center after grilling. Great job by the cook. I can always grill a good steak at home, but nothing like this wonderful piece of beef. The service here is always downhome friendly, laidback, and prompt. One of our favorite rustic, small town venues. NOTE: I toyed with the idea of recommending Tuesdays so you don't beat us to the last one, but my conscience, often called my wife, would not let me do it. We love this place for the burgers. But DO NOT go here for a nice meal like shrimp or steak. The corn is from a can and the shrimp is bland and rubbery. Husbands steak was greasy and thin. The road to Chubby's is a beautiful drive through the mountains. After wondering if he was driving me to the country to dump my ass in a snowbank, we finally arrived at Chubby's. It's a small place that looks like a small honkytonk bar. We walked through the bar area, toward the back of the building where they seat people for dinner. We were greeted by a friendly waitress. She brought me a much needed Moose Drool and I was ready to place my order. I ordered the rib-eye steak rare with a baked potato. Before the steak, we were served a simple salad with lettuce, croutons, and I think our dressing choices were ranch and italian. I didn't pay much attention because I was waiting for my steak. My side of beef finally came to the table! Talk about a HUGE steak! The steak came with a side dish of corn that was swimming in butter. I cut into my steak and was initially worried that it might have been overcooked, but one more cut, and it was BEAUTIFUL. I took a bite and was a very happy girl! The meat was seasoned well and did not require any steak sauce. The potato was no frills and simple served with butter and sour cream, but it was good! The food at Chubby's is simple, no frills, meat and potatoes. I hope to return to Chubby's again to try their other carnivore pleasing offerings! So I've only been here a couple of times...and tonight will be the last for my husband and I. We ordered our steaks medium rare. They came out well done. Shrimp on the side was also over cooked. I was never asked if I wanted a refill on my drink. For $30 a meal I would expect at least my steak to be cooked close to what I ordered. The meat seemed to be subpar as it was. We'll go elsewhere from now on when we want a steak. Server was nice however. Just a dive bar that claims "the best" food... Fail. read more

Went to chubby's last week after seeing the billboard for months. Had the 14oz steak. Very good. Went back night before last for the prime rib special. Again very good!!!!! I will definitely be back. Our waitress was awesome. i wish I i ew her name so I could post it. Very friendly and made sure we were taken care of!!!!!! This ain't no podunk shack. Consider this the closest thing to a gastropub in the Helena area. The quality of the meat and seafood here rivals that of large US cities...at a much better price. This claim is evidenced in their prime rib and king crab legs. The prime rib is of superior quality (well marbled) and the crab legs are full of succulent & sweet meat. You will not feel jipped for burning the gas to drive to this place. Service is quick and attentive. Decor is Montana casual, but the food is deserving of a more upscale environment. Definitely a Montana bar feel. Nevertheless, let the food speak for itself and come treat yourself to an experience. Also, they chop the leftover prime rib for chili on football Sundays...and offer it for FREE. Their chocolate lava cake is great with an ice cold shot of Jaeger. You will not leave hungry. This is my go-to place for a burger. Have been to Chubby's three times now and the food has always been delish!! I always order the bacon cheese burger and fries. The burgers are big, juicy and full of smoky flavor. The beer-batter fries are always hot and crispy!! My husband has ordered the prime rib and also the steak sandwich dinners and has said both are fantastic. But an even better deal and just as good is when they have the grilled prime rib special. $6 less and you just don't get a salad. But you can sub the salad for the potato if you want to. If you are looking for an amazing steak or prime rib, DO NOT GO HERE! We wanted to give them one last chance. Never again. We went on a Saturday for the wife's Birthday. This is the only place I have been where a waiter knows he spilled your dressing all over your salad plate and does nothing about it. Did not care, and walked away. We should have left at that point. Our initial order of Medium rare Prime ribs came out looking grey and way over cooked. Not an ounce or chance of looking appetizing. I thought the Army was the only place to serve grey meat. When talking to the waiter he said they always look grey, and asked if we wanted them cooked longer. WTH?? Not that we remember. Then he said they always boil their Prime rib?? Chili's can cook better Prime rib. So, we send those back and order the rib eyes. They came out with a nice char on one side, and almost raw on the other. That wasn't an issue. We asked for medium rare. But no flavor what so ever is an issue! And my dogs were really happy that I paid $29 for so much fat for them. To top it off, they up charged the sides because we switched from the Prime to the Rib Eye which is more anyways. Bad food, bad service, bad customer care, update your beer selection once in a decade, and find someone that can cook! We used to take relatives, friends, out of towners, or just us here. I was in town visiting the in-laws and they were just raving about this place. We went on a Friday night, Prime Rib night apparently, and it was very busy. I had read the Yelp reviews beforehand and was pretty excited for the food. I wasn't super hungry so I opted for a burger (there really isn't much on the menu but burgers, steaks, or prime rib). It was ok, not great. Fries were nicely seasoned. We did get a lot of weird looks I think because we weren't regulars (trust me, two city lesbians stood out like a sore thumb). Overall I just really dont see why everyone raves about this place. It was good, but not great. Steaks are big but not good quality. Been here 4 times now and had several steaks and prime rib. Always had a stripe of gristle in the steaks or inedible fat on the rib. We had a party of 10 and had first had to wait an hour (no reservations). Food ok, though all who ordered ribeye said it was way too chooey. But the biggest issue was the bill. They refused to split tickets with over 6. So we each went over the bill and each couple paid what was owed. Sadly, the amount provided was insufficient and all had to kick in a significant amount over and to cover the tip.
