Have lived in O'side since 2017 and am kicking myself for not joining Oceanside Sea Center (new name) for a fishing trip yet. Today went with my 9 year old son who has persistently asked me for months to take him fishing. We left the harbor at 10:00 am and returned about 3:30 pm. Half day of fishing was excellent. One of the deck hands (Nacho) caught a 50lb Black Sea bass that we had to let go (endangered)!!!! The rest of us caught loads of rock fish, sculpin, sand dab, and whitefish. They kept us moving and catching fish the whole time. If you are military go to ITT and get the tickets for just $40 and they didn't charge us extra for the tackle, bait or poles. We went out on the So Cal ship and I think Captain David, Nacho, Jake and the rest of the crew were SUPERB! I never felt to guilty about the birds nests. Jake and the other deck hands helped my son constantly and we both had a great time. I would recommend this ship and crew to everyone I know. Don't forget to ask Nacho to make you a nice breakfast burrito to go along with the mid morning Modelo. It was fun watching the young crew members pick on Nacho as he is clearly the old man from the sea who really knows how to fish (and cook).

    Quality 20+ lb yellowtails!

Went on the Pronto Sportfishing Boat a few weeks ago with Captain David and Mike working deck. Had a blast! This was my first private charter on the boat, which is a bit smaller than I am used to.. but we did a 10 pack load and ended up working well since we all knew each other on the boat. The Captain and crew worked hard to keep us on fish all day, and we came home with a bunch of 20+ lb quality Yellowtail. I will definitely be back, and looking forward to chartering this boat next season!

Review for our fishing trip on Sunday, July 6th (Tiny was Captain, Patrick and Caleb were deckhands, Grant, the cook) If you are like me and have to check reviews before deciding on a restaurant, business, etc. read this and go on the Chubasco II!! The guys were so helpful, patient, friendly, and knowledgable. I have two small children (6 & 9) and a 13 year old and the guys were so nice and patient with them. They made our first experience sport fishing unforgettable and we are already planning our next trip with them. My son caught 5 and 2 were keepers, I caught 5 (2 were keepers). Overall, our party of ten took home about 18 fish; bass and mackerel. One of the deck hands even took the time to tell me how to cook the fish we caught. (Caleb, thank you!) The guys clean and fillet the fish for you for a $1 a fish. My husband and I came back to our house and made the best fish tacos!! The bathrooms were clean, the boat was very clean and was kept clean throughout the trip. The guys would help us bait our hooks and cast our lines. They did this for our kids a lot which made it possible for my husband and I to actually fish. The cook, Grant, is great! The egg sandwich and egg burritos were wonderful! The cheese burger was superb. I know crazy, right?, from a sport fishing boat, but seriously it was good. Take cash for tipping and the cleaning of your fish. Just go! You will have the best time! Tip: if you get motion sickness, then definitely prepare for that because you definitely feel the water.

Although I had a bout of motion sickness, everything about this trip was outstanding. The ease of online reservations, prompt communication from Captain Ernie, the wonderful staff, the cleanliness of the boat and good equipment. The staff and passengers aboard Chubasco II on Sunday, June 1, 2014 were awesome. The staff constantly assisted a novice like me, kept the deck clean, moved to other locations when fish weren't biting and they ensured that everyone had a good time. The people on the fishing trip were so pleasant and helpful. Also, it wasn't crowded like I thought it would be. I had heard some negative stories about fishing trips but I didn't experience it here. Check out the FAQ page on the website if you have any questions. If your question isn't answered there, send an email and you will get a prompt reply from Captain Ernie. If there is a possibility that you may become seasick, take something for it. There were a couple of us that didn't think we'd have a problem but we did. And it's such a great fishing experience that you'd want to enjoy it. Bring cash for well deserved tips to the staff, and there was a $5 fuel charge at check in. Additionally, if you want to join the Jackpot, that was $5 also. On this trip, a young man won $150 with his 25 lb fish! Woo hoo! Not to worry, if you don't have cash, they also accept credit cards. My co-worker and I bought a Living Social deal for another trip as soon as we landed. We had a blast and are looking forward to the next trip!

    HA! So much fun.

Great crew!!!! Overly emphatic on what a great crew it was: helpful, quick, knowledgeable, good fishing spots & fun. (Tip was well well deserved...wish I could've given more!!) The food/drink was delicious looking/smelling, cheap prices as expected things to be over priced hence why I brought food (next time eating on board)! First time deep sea fishing, lots of fish, fun......had a blast! Just go---thanks!

Went fishing 10/3/17 with a group of people on a private charter, had the best time!! the crew was always makin rounds chumming and doing everything they could to help everyone catch fish. The captain was maneuvering through an obstacle course of lobster traps putting us on fish every time. We had a few beginners on board and the crew was providing them extra attention and makin sure they caught a fish. Always helpful and always professional!! Definitely will be doing this trip again!!

Big yellows on 11/21/14. Yup in November 1/2 day boat. What a great time thanks guys.

I have been on the Chubasco 2 many times this year. Both on 3/4 day trips and on 1/2 days. Every time we go out with them we have a great time. Tiny always puts us on some fish. Caleb, Chad and Grant take care of everyone's needs from tying knots to making a great cheeseburger. We live in San Diego and have many options for our fishing trips, but need not go anywhere else. Can't wait to go out again.

If Duy N. was talking about the fishing from today 12/28/13 then he doesn't know what he's talking about. The jackpot was won by me and I'm not an employee and the boat got back in about 30 min after 4. Even if it was a little late getting back to the dock it gave you a little extra time to fish why are you complaining about that? The crew is always great on this boat. Duy N. Deleted his post... Good job standing by what you say.

I went out on the Chubasco last year and then again this past month. They changed locations to Oceanside so it's new fishing but I had such an awesome time! The crew was amazing and helped me get set up because I don't have that much experience fishing. We went to a couple different spots and I caught some sculpin, whitefish and sand cod (idk?). The water was pretty choppy but the captain tried a few times and got us into the perfect spot for us to fish. The crew was so helpful and explained how to use the rod and all that. I can't say this enough, an amazing time with the friendly and helpful crew of the chubasco 2!! Thanks guys, I'll be back soon!!

Ernie and all the crew at Chubasco sportfishing are hands down the best outfitters that I have ever gone through for my fishing needs. I have been on several other boats in the San Diego and Los Angeles area, and they always stand above the rest. Why you ask? The fishing? Sure. These guys just plain catch fish. A lot of other boats are good at finding and catching fish also. But what sets them apart even more than that is their customer service. I can't speak highly enough about that aspect. They treat everyone like family whether you are a regular or you're a first timer taking your kids out for their first fish. Line snagged on the bottom? You can almost bet someone from the crew has seen it even before you have and is already right beside you to ask if you want a hand getting it out. Their positive attitude all around he boat always keeps spirits up when fishing is tough. Solid burgers and galley food as well. Just overall a very pleasant experience for anybody looking to fish a local 1/2 day or charter out the Pronto. Keep up the good work guys we appreciate it! Oh and did I mention these guys catch fish like no other?

    Great 1/2 day trip!

Approximately how much time is actually spent fishing? I mean after you subtract getting on board and travel, and coming back to doc?

The camp spots are all quite close to each other with not much privacy, but that wasn't a problem for me. The park itself seems really great for biking and just walking around. They have long and short trails with lots of nature to look at. The lakes themselves are not too big, but I did see people fishing. There are many benches throughout the trails. There were also many trees that gave me many options for putting my eno up! That's the Western half that is more like the park. The Eastern half has walking trails that are more like a nature preserve. Some reviewers commented about how the trails are unkempt, and that's mostly true on the Eastern side and the Nature Trail. It wasn't too bothersome, as most of the trails were wide enough. The annoying part, though, is that there's a lot of dry, dead weeds/plants that carpet the trails with little splinters, which inevitably get into my shoes and jab me. Other than that, it's an easy, flat-ish 4 miles of walking. Lots of birds by the lake. Parking is paid in the lot, but there's also free parking along the street.

For Christmas, my husband's aunt gifted tickets to our entire extended family to enjoy a whale watching tour together so we finally landed on a date and it was an awesome experience from start to finish. We arrived about 15 minutes early for our 9:30am boarding time, checked in at the kiosk and were given paper tickets to be handed over to the crew as we came aboard. Once onboard, we were introduced over the speaker to the captain and crew and given a quick rundown of the itinerary and safety procedures. We navigated through the harbor where we spotted our local sea lion neighbors basking in the sun which especially delighted the kids and the out-of-town/state passengers, sailed out of the harbor and into the open sea. It was a pleasantly calm morning with hardly any wind and very smooth sailing. The only slight downside was that it was a particularly gray morning, so there was little distinction between the color of the ocean versus the sky but it was very clear and we could see for a long distance. We got probably close to halfway through our two-hour tour without any sightings but once we were about 5 miles off the coast, we started hearing transmissions between the crew over their walkies so we knew to start keeping our eyes peeled. The next half hour or so was spent watching three beautiful fin whales take turns coming up for air, swimming under the boat, rolling playfully and showing their light-colored bellies. It was so fun to be able to move about the boat freely to try to get the best view, some photos and videos, while being filled in by the crew on interesting marine facts. Finally the whales took their deep dives, at which point we were informed they wouldn't be coming back up for air for a while and it was about time to head back. The cruise back was equally smooth as the adventure out, and we got in right on time and prepared to disembark but not before getting coupons for a future expedition and adorable fin whale stickers to commemorate our tour. I can't WAIT to go on another whale watching tour with Oceanside Adventures - it was the best time!! I would 100000% recommend.

Until Chuck called me back, last minute. "I just got a cancellation -- you still up for fishing?" To be clear, the adventure didn't measure up to some of the more impressive charters I've enjoyed, but it wasn't the time of year where bigger fish, like tuna, were abundant. Chuck said we'd be hunting for Sheepshead and Rockfish (not to be confused with east coast Rockfish), as we headed out we saw plenty of fat and happy seals, dolphin dropped by to say hello, and my kid stood up top with Chuck, peppering him with questions about his tales from the seas, of which he had many, including a gray whale epic that blew me away. In the end, our lines generally popped with activity, and I never mellowed over that genuine intrigue about deep sea fishing, the "I wonder what's on the end of my line" anticipation as I reeled up a catch. For those of you who wonder how to cook Sheepshead -- it's a rubbery, almost Cod-like fillet -- check the interwebs for crab cake recipes. It took plenty of bread crumbs and more than a little sriracha, but in the end we had winner winner fishin' dinner.
