Overall this was a good fishing experience. I've had bad experiences with Helgrens fishing in the past so it was nice having an alternative company in Oceanside. So how was the trip? The weather was great, and the sea was calm. Dolphins accompanied us at the bow of the boat on our way out of the harbor. The water was clear enough to get amazing photos of these playful animals.. Our trip was in between fishing seasons (late January) and it seemed like the fishery was already depleted and all that was left were undersized fish and those pesky perch. So fishing wise the trip was a bust. I can't knock the experience because our burlap sack was empty. There are no guarantees when it comes to fishing. Crew was solid. Mike the deckhand was helpful and had a good attitude. Nacho the cook was serving up some tasty burgers in the galley. Family-friendly? We were the only family on this trip and it was safe for kids. They play classic rock and they do a great job setting up your fishing rigs, even if you bring your own poles. The Chubasco 2 was still a fun time and the Oceanside Sea Center (the owners/managers) did a great job from start to finish. We used Groupon to buy discounted tickets. Recommended. Tips - There were only 18 total fishermen (including crew) on our half day trip on a Friday. That was a good number as there was enough room to fish and rotate spots along the railing. On weekends as many as 40 people fish on this boat and that would be too crowded for me. If you can swing it, go midweek. - Remember to tip the crew. - Many people rented poles ($15). Good idea if you're new. They also provide the hook and weight and will make sure that you're always up and running. read more

Have lived in O'side since 2017 and am kicking myself for not joining Oceanside Sea Center (new name) for a fishing trip yet. Today went with my 9 year old son who has persistently asked me for months to take him fishing. We left the harbor at 10:00 am and returned about 3:30 pm. Half day of fishing was excellent. One of the deck hands (Nacho) caught a 50lb Black Sea bass that we had to let go (endangered)!!!! The rest of us caught loads of rock fish, sculpin, sand dab, and whitefish. They kept us moving and catching fish the whole time. If you are military go to ITT and get the tickets for just $40 and they didn't charge us extra for the tackle, bait or poles. We went out on the So Cal ship and I think Captain David, Nacho, Jake and the rest of the crew were SUPERB! I never felt to guilty about the birds nests. Jake and the other deck hands helped my son constantly and we both had a great time. I would recommend this ship and crew to everyone I know. Don't forget to ask Nacho to make you a nice breakfast burrito to go along with the mid morning Modelo. Went on the Pronto Sportfishing Boat a few weeks ago with Captain David and Mike working deck. Had a blast! This was my first private charter on the boat, which is a bit smaller than I am used to.. but we did a 10 pack load and ended up working well since we all knew each other on the boat. The Captain and crew worked hard to keep us on fish all day, and we came home with a bunch of 20+ lb quality Yellowtail. The guys were so helpful, patient, friendly, and knowledgable. I have two small children (6 & 9) and a 13 year old and the guys were so nice and patient with them. They made our first experience sport fishing unforgettable and we are already planning our next trip with them. My son caught 5 and 2 were keepers, I caught 5 (2 were keepers). Overall, our party of ten took home about 18 fish; bass and mackerel. One of the deck hands even took the time to tell me how to cook the fish we caught. (Caleb, thank you!) The guys clean and fillet the fish for you for a $1 a fish. My husband and I came back to our house and made the best fish tacos!! The bathrooms were clean, the boat was very clean and was kept clean throughout the trip. The guys would help us bait our hooks and cast our lines. They did this for our kids a lot which made it possible for my husband and I to actually fish. The cook, Grant, is great! The egg sandwich and egg burritos were wonderful! The cheese burger was superb. I know crazy, right?, from a sport fishing boat, but seriously it was good. Take cash for tipping and the cleaning of your fish. Just go! You will have the best time! The ease of online reservations, prompt communication from Captain Ernie, the wonderful staff, the cleanliness of the boat and good equipment. The staff and passengers aboard Chubasco II on Sunday, June 1, 2014 were awesome. The staff constantly assisted a novice like me, kept the deck clean, moved to other locations when fish weren't biting and they ensured that everyone had a good time. The people on the fishing trip were so pleasant and helpful. Also, it wasn't crowded like I thought it would be. I had heard some negative stories about fishing trips but I didn't experience it here. Check out the FAQ page on the website if you have any questions. If your question isn't answered there, send an email and you will get a prompt reply from Captain Ernie. If there is a possibility that you may become seasick, take something for it. There were a couple of us that didn't think we'd have a problem but we did. I had a great experience fishing with Chubasco. They were very professional and helpful. Here are some things they do better than others: 1. They know the good spots to fish. Others seem like they just go somewhere random. Chubasco always knows where to go. 2. Their baits are awesome! Huge anchovies! Mackerels! 3. They are very professional! They are patient with you and always help you no matter how many times you screw up (I messed up a lot but they always help!) What else do you need? Some things to keep in mind: 1. Use the Living Social / Groupon deals. Going there can get expensive with renting a rod, etc 2. Grab breakfast beforehand! Usually, I just get a breakfast burrito from a nearby Mexican joint. 3. I went out on the Chubasco last year and then again this past month. They changed locations to Oceanside so it's new fishing but I had such an awesome time! The crew was amazing and helped me get set up because I don't have that much experience fishing. We went to a couple different spots and I caught some sculpin, whitefish and sand cod (idk?). The water was pretty choppy but the captain tried a few times and got us into the perfect spot for us to fish. The crew was so helpful and explained how to use the rod and all that. Back in 2010, I fished the Chubasco II when it was near Seaforth Landing. It was a great boat and the crew was very helpful. Due to the job pressures at my work, I had to curtail my fishing hobby and stuck with the occasional multi-day runs out of H&M Landing (just four trips in seven years). A few months ago I was fortunate enough to retire with my health. I promised myself that when I retired, I would do more fishing. In searching for a sportfishing boat, I discovered that the Chubasco II moved its operations to Oceanside. Being familiar with the boat, I fished a couple trips. I had such a great time that I decided to fish on the boat regularly. So, now a few of my friends and I fish the boat every Wednesday. It has been two months now and I have yet to find a bad thing to say. We have done some great fishing on the Chubasco II, the captains of the boat know where to find the fish and boat crew is always friendly and knowledgeable. Ernie and all the crew at Chubasco sportfishing are hands down the best outfitters that I have ever gone through for my fishing needs. I have been on several other boats in the San Diego and Los Angeles area, and they always stand above the rest. Why you ask? The fishing? Sure. These guys just plain catch fish. A lot of other boats are good at finding and catching fish also. But what sets them apart even more than that is their customer service. I can't speak highly enough about that aspect. They treat everyone like family whether you are a regular or you're a first timer taking your kids out for their first fish. Line snagged on the bottom? You can almost bet someone from the crew has seen it even before you have and is already right beside you to ask if you want a hand getting it out. Their positive attitude all around he boat always keeps spirits up when fishing is tough. Solid burgers and galley food as well. Eric and Chad were an excellent team. In fact, far more than excellent. We had gone with Eric and Chad for my bachelor party and knew absolutely nothing about fishing. In fact all 9 of us knew zero about fishing. But that proved to be a non-issue. They took care of us by showing us everything we needed to know in order to catch a total of 17 fish. We were able to snatched up a mix of rock fish, mackerel, and flounder. Our largest being maybe a 10 lb rock fish! Additionally it was nice that they provided snacks and drinks for us. But where the service really shines was their flexibility in our start time, return time, and especially the attention given to us by Chad. Chad was the best! Any time our lines got tangled, bam, he was right there. He'd hand us a new line and rod while he took the tangled or jammed one so we lost no time at all. If we needed help bringing the fish in after reeling it - he had our back. Oh, don't like to filet or gut the fish? Guess who got you - Chad does. Above all he truly loves fishing and helping us out. I do a lot of deep sea fishing in San Diego and Chubasco is by far the best sport fishing experience! First off the location is excellent with ample parking. Many sport fishing business are located in Point Loma where parking is expensive and a challenge to find. Captain Ernie "Tiny" and his crew (Caleb, Emily, Chad and tall blond guy) make the experience enjoyable. First off, no one in the crew smokes or dips (to each his own) but I think it's a great experience when no one is puffing smoke or spitting dip while helping you with your fish. Plus there is always someone around to help you. I never had to wait when I caught a fish. I like how bait was available at both ends of the boat, so there are never any crowds or a wait for bait. Plus Captain Tiny really wants people to have a great time. If no one catches anything within a few minutes, he will move to another spot. I've been to other boats where the captain will stay in a spot because moving around can be expensive on fuel. The cost is inexpensive compared to other sport fishing companies. I think I paid an additional $5 for the fishing pole rental and a few dollars for the sack. Overall, Chubasco Sportfishing is a great experience for a beginner and expert. The crew makes the experience enjoyable. I will fish with this crew again! read more

My review is long overdue. I went on 6/20/15, I fish a lot but never on a charter before. This was my first, and it was not my last chartered fishing trip. So with some under my belt for comparison, I guess better late than never. I could write a long story but there is no need. I thought it was interesting how this ship had a solid 5 stars. After riding with them, I can see why. The crew is awesome to work with and very helpful on deck. They tell us exactly what's going on and set the expectations for the trip. That day they told us that the tuna were not biting, even if we got into a school of them so instead of unsuccessfully trying to hit something, they wanted to get fish in the boat, and that we did. We targeted those orange rock fish early in the day and then sea bass at the end of the day. Everyone put fish on the boat and honestly, all you had to do was arrive with your sealegs, hold a pole and do as they instruct. Great ride for all experience levels. read more

Purchased a Groupon for this company (Half Day Sportfishing Trip + Equipment) for $35 and it was definitely worth it. Make reservations online and if you plan on going on a weekend, be sure to book atleast a few weeks in advance. Spots fill up fast! The tour is from 9am - 4pm. Be sure to arrive at least 30 minutes early as it takes awhile to check in and get everyone situated. Parking is fairly easy with plenty of street parking across from where the docks are located. When you arrive, go straight behind the Sportsmen's Seafood Restaurant and head straight to the docks. A fishing license is required so be sure to pick one up at your local sporting shop for $14.95 for a day pass. The boat we were on holds about 40 people and took us out to some local kelp beds. As someone who is prone to sea sickness, luckily the boat doesn't go too far away from shore so the water isn't as choppy. However, Dramamine is still HIGHLY recommended. That day we used live anchovies as bait and they worked amazingly well. Hook through the nose! The crew is unbelievably helpful and the other passengers on the boat were super friendly. Great people makes for a great experience! This was my first time going and I was still able to catch about 15 fish (mix of Kelp Bass and Barracuda). However, due to size restrictions, I only kept 3. Still, considering I expected to catch ZERO fish, this was a great day for me! Once the day is over, the crew will clean your fish for you (filet or gut/gill) for $1 each. Definitely worth it. Don't forget to tip the amazing crew and to sample the cook's breakfast burrito! Best catch of the day for me though was when the crew let me take home a 5 lb bag of live anchovies that we hadn't used for free! I should have written a review sooner. I went out with my kids on July 4th. We went on the half day deep sea fishing cruise. All the crew were extremely friendly and helpful. I wish I could remember their names to thank them personally in this review. The crew really went out of their way to help my kids catch fish. I was able to fish and not worry about baiting hooks or taking fish off the line. One of the crew knew my daughter's name, since he was trying to help her the entire day. There is a small grill on the boat with decent food and prices. The boat is clean and serviceable. The fishing was good. There were a couple of very large Tunas caught in the morning and then we moved closer to shore and caught a bunch of Bass and Yellow Tail. The half day was almost eight hours. So be prepared with gear of cooler weather in the morning and lots of water and sun tan oil. I would definitely go back. Thank you. read more

Experience: Great fishing experience with this boat! The day we went, mostly bass and mackerel were caught. There were some barracudas, too. Keep in mind, the crew do measure your catches and due to certain size restrictions you'll only be able to keep whatever falls within range (the rest are released back into the ocean). Nonstop bites left and right in all the four locations they stopped at though! Staff: The overall mood of the boat was very energetic, but the crew kept everyone in uplifting spirits. Each time someone hooked a fish, the crew members would rally around the person and cheer them on. They were especially helpful teaching and giving tips on how to bait, cast, and reel. Cleanliness: What do you expect from going ocean fishing for half the day? Obviously you'll get a little dirty and fishy smelling, but the guys did a great job of spraying down the deck each time we switched locations. They also have two restrooms on board (one for female, one for male). Price: Not sure how much this excursion usually costs, but I got the Groupon deal for fishing + equipment. The packaged deal includes all fishing equipment and unlimited bait, so it's definitely worth it if this is something you're interested in trying. Overall, the Chubasco II know what they're doing! They know all the hot fishing spots where you and fellow fishers on the boat will definitely not go home empty handed. Our party of six took home over 50 fishes! I went on Chubasco 2 on 3 occasions last year. Captain Ernie and the crew are a fun bunch of guys. Knowledgeable and very helpful. Fishing wasn't the best, but I don't blame that on the crew. The boat is pretty nice, great value for day fishing trips. One nice thing, the location is great for getting out and getting the hooks in the water. The location in Mission Bay makes them the closest to the fishing grounds. Less time commuting, more time fishing. I did catch a Dorado on one of my trips which made it all worth while. :-) read more

I scheduled a family reunion, private fishing trip with Captain/Owner Ernie aboard the Pronto. I was coming from the east coast and Ernie was very helpful and answered all my questions via the phone and email. No pressure at all. There were 6 of us total and there was plenty of room as the boat can hold 12. After a quick safety lesson we took off a little early around 8:50 AM on Wed, 4/14/14 for a half-day trip that ended at 3:00 PM with Captain George (Ernie did meet with us and send us off) and deck hand Caleb. They supplied water, soda, coffee, and breakfast danishes as well as all the tackle and live bait as part of the cost. There was a $1 per fish filleted which they bagged up for us and put on ice. Now for the important stuff: service and fishing. Captain George and Caleb provided excellent service and the fishing was spectacular...80 rock fish up to 5 lbs in 3 hours! As my buddy said, "Cancel Christmas!" Many doubles (2 on one line) and there was a point where you would reel 2 in and George or Caleb would just hand you another rod with fish on it and say start reeling! The fish were at ~300 feet so we were pretty tired! To finish up, after slaying it and catching our limit in 3 hours we tried our luck at Halibut but alas no dice. Every time I go on this boat (about 5-6 times) the crew is friendly and extremely helpful. If you're new to fishing or haven't done it in a while this is the boat for you! Also, I've always caught at least one fish, and one time I got four yellow fins on a half day trip! The food is good and they have great beer, they will gut or fillet your fish for you at the end. Overall a great experience every time! TIP: Show up in time to buy your fishing license if need be. They are available in the building that is about 100 yards EAST of where the Chubasco is parked in the morning.I recommend showing up at 8:30 if your a last minute person, 8-8:15 for early birds (parking lot can get pretty full on weekends). Also, bring a hat, sunglasses, sunblock, Dramamine just in case, and snacks if you want to be cheap but they have snacks on board for a good price. Good for kids ages 8 up I would say, if they are relatively well behaved. If not then please don't take them, for everyone's sake lol. read more

These guys are a first class operation, 5 out of 5 stars and here's why: I've been on this boat 4 times now on offshore 3/4 day trips, and each time I've either exceeded my limits (released or shared my catch of course), or got very close. They're always good at finding fish. The crew is always nice, helpful and their main priority is for the customer to have a good time and catch alot of fish. Grant is a super chill cook/deckhand. Dan is the man. He's probably one of my favorite deckhands in the entire SD fleet including all the major landings. I recently heard he jumped in after a rod that a customer dropped. For some reason that didn't surprise me, as like mentioned above, Dan is the man. Tiny is a great captain when Ernie's not at the wheel, and Ernie is a super good captain as well, as good as they get. These guys are small and appreciate your business. I've seen captains yelling and berating paying customers, I've seen asshat deckhands not willing to help, I've about seen it all and I've never had a bad experience on this boat. One tip though is that the Chubasco II is a smaller boat and when it's choppy out there, you definitely feel it. So take the Bonine or get the patch. Better safe than sorry. read more

Captain Ernie runs a good boat and his crew is always friendly and helpful. I've been riding with them several times each season since I restarted ocean fishing about 9 years ago. Either Ernie or his alternate captains always work hard to find fish. On my last trip on 7/13, I hooked a 25.5# bluefin tuna on 25# gear. During a fight of some 15-20 mins or so, the crew helped me around the bow 3 times from two complete rotations and kept the fish away from the rudders a few times. We decided to give the whole salt water thing a try, while we got a rocky start the whole crew was really patient and took the time to help us set up ect.
