Great store to get a gift for someone or a treat for yourself. The Inciardi print vending machine is right near the entrance. It costs 4 quarters for 1 print. Fall in love with merchants!…read more If you are a tourist, this store in an essential NYC visit. As a local, Top Hat makes me glad to live in Manhattan. I am a recent transplant, shopped around the world and this shop inspires me about the beauty of small merchants. I was in the store for an hour and found things for everyone. The buyer Nina(spell?) gets the magic of artisans creating timeless goods that they clearly love. What you will find: - unique items for the home or desk ranging from Japanese patterned translucent tape for journaling or scrapping to handmade toys. And from simple hanging lamps and floor pillows to rolls of paper with designs for hanging or wrapping. - this is not walmart! There are only 100 different items in the small store, yet each one is selected with intention and make the perfect thoughtful gift. - I have a favorite friend who loves birds... Top Hat has a collection of bird calls to make the most avid bird enthusiast drool. They are hand made in France by a man who usually spends two years perfecting the sound. For example a Merle sound is produced by twisting a metal bar inside a wooden pipe with a porcelain washer. The sound is right on and fun to make. So many bird calls including a few boxes with 6 different calls inside. Great for lifetime students. - hand embroidered patches including a cool Beatles set. - journals - bags made from a special rip stop paper, just right for the cool recycler in your family. - special pens, pastels and pencils - artwork in everything. - I found a pair of horse shoes for kids that make a great horse walking sound when they clomp around in them. Any parents limiting plastic exposure for kids will love this place. - want to send a beautiful letter via traditional post? I picked up a letter that the receiver will blow open to read and enjoy as an opaque cube. - too many things to list... - OK one more. A card with a map printed of various regions and a needle with red thread to push through locations for a sewn track showing where you've been or where you want to go. Romantic travel invitation from an admirer? Finally, the people. The owners and the staff are present and happy to be there. (thanks Jen) They work at Top Hat for the same reason I loved shopping there it seems.

There are three John Derian shops in a row, mostly with similar themes. My first review was…read moreconcerning their famous Christmas ornament extravaganza, which was fun, but overrated. The ornaments were overpriced and the store was overcrowded. I saw the store mentioned in another New York guide and decided to give it another try. This time was a lot more fun. No crowds. No one huddled around miniature Christmas trees. Things here are pretty expensive. Not out of the realm of the middle class or upper middle class, but this is no affordable vintage thrift store. That being said, there are some very fun things here for people wishing to build a whimsical home. Fun glassware, tableware, lamps, tramp art. Furniture, but let's be honest, you can find the same slub velvet pieces in thrift stores for much less. This was a cool place to enjoy design and how to arrange store displays. Kookie things like stuffed animals. Colorful textiles. A big mix of inventory, from older looking stuff to more modern. Maybe a bit of an old country English vibe. Employees were nice, though a little reserved. Which I honestly appreciate when employees aren't pushy, but let you know they are available. A fun place to peruse, buying or not, and very instagrammable.

I felt uncomfortable enough that I didn't touch anything to check prices. If I wanted to know about an item I spoke to the Sales Associate. I wanted a refrigerator magnet. The design I wanted was not sold in a single magnet. They have packs of four for $16.00. I really didn't want to spend that much to have my favorite painting on the refrigerator! The Sales Associate assured me they were going to start selling them in packs of two. I believe they have a plan to offer more reasonably priced items in the store. He gave me that impression. This store has typically been high end in the past. The store itself is beautifully designed. If you wander around to the back and look up there is a view that I can not describe. The rounded Guggenheim signature skylight in mini form. Take a look at my photo to see what I mean. On the upper floor of the museum is a smaller gift shop that contains mostly items related to the current exhibition. They call the upper floor small gift store the "Exhibition Store". You can't get to it without admission to the museum. You can go to the main street level gift store with out museum admission. I've learned to enjoy this museum shop now that I am not working.
