Stopped here for lunch before a whale watching tour. This place screams of a summer beach food stale that you would find at a lake. You place your order, they give you a number and they call it over a PA system when your order is ready. We chose to sit outside by the water which was very calming and got us ready for our boat tour. read more

First time here; crab cakes were AMAZING. The aioli that came with it was great but I did also ask for some chow chow which was delightful. 3 star because I'm a huge chowder fan and this one I took about 2 spoonfuls. Very fishy taste, not creamy, no potato. I figured a chowder house would have the best of the best. The ingredients were definitely all very fresh. I had rosé to drink which was local (coastal vineyard) - first time I ever tried it and was in love. It's too bad you can't bring drinks outdoors but understandable :) read more

We spent two nights in Sydney and in between, we drove the Cabot Trail. We were at Neil's Harbour by lunchtime and stopped at The Chowder House. This is a cool little place, it was pretty busy but we were seated right away. Shortly after that there was a waiting line. We each had a bowl of Seafood Chowder (what else could we do in a place called The Chowder House). This was good chowder, not the best we had in Nova Scotia. It had lots of seafood including scallops, lobster, haddock and cold water shrimp. It just needed some touches. It needed a little salt, some butter and a better choice of potatoes. I would also have liked something to add some depth (slight sweetness) like just a little celery. The potatoes they selected were a variety that gets grainy in chowder instead of staying waxy. It was certainly worth the stop but we did not find perfection in our bowls. Attention to detail was missing and these are easy things to fix. read more

We were driving on the Cabot Trail and picked up a hitch hiker, college kid on his way to Ingonish beach. My wife heard that the clam chowder in Cape Breton was top shelf so we asked the kid if there was any place he would recommend. He mentioned the Chowder House which is just off the Cabot Trail. The restaurant has great views and is very quaint, very classic and old school. We ordered a cup of clam chowder nothing else. The portion was reasonable and there was a small biscuit (remember this is Canada part of the Commonwealth so don't expect Southern style, these are a little on the sweet side, good stuff though). The chowder was thin, I'm use to the thicker variety. It was loaded with clams and potatoes. It was okay nothing spectacular but something to check off the list during the trip. read more

Soooooooo many people recommended this place - food is good but be weary of the grumpy staff and the time warp you'll experience once you step into the large shed playing the radio on a stool by the door. Our food wasn't bad - the chowder was chockful of seafood but it was not the best I had tasted - could've done with some dill and a bit more seasoning. We also got the crab cakes, which were full of crab and didn't have any potoato at all (yay!) but were oddly slightly curried in flavour - different but not bad. We also got the lobster sandwich which tasted fine and was, again, filled with lobster meet. I would suggest holding out and driving somewhere else for food, especially if they look busy. read more

Tried the chowder and the seafood platter. Great food and great service! Some restaurants make up the quantity of chowder with cream but not this one. The corn and crab chowder is somewhat overpowered by the corn but still tasted very good. read more

Chowder House promises a seafood fest but what it offers looks more like seafood feces We actually made a detour from our way to try this place mentioned in our tourist guide. We found the place the end of the lighthouse road. First impression was of a dirty fast food but we gave it a try since it was even mentioned in the guide. This is by far the worst place where we ate during all out trip through Atlantic Canada. The food lacked any savour. The chowder had no texture while the mussels, crab plate and fisherman's plate had literally no taste. They serve them with some pre packaged commercial sauce that couldn't save the plate. The service was poor although we were the only customers in there. The cashier looked bored and unengaging in giving us more details on the menu. She didn't allow us to take metal utensils as we said we prefer to eat outside - as if I would have ran away back to Montreal with her metal spoons. We had to get back in the cabin due to strong wind and because I needed to use the pliers for my crab. Just when we moved back in one of the staff decided she needs to sweep the floors ... in our food! A total waste of 80$ (no tips) for this crap.Terribly bad food and service and severely overpriced. Quaint location on the edge of the ocean. That and the fries are the best things about here. Avoid the lobster - it is not fresh! The fact that they are in the ocean, in a fishing village makes it u fathomable, but sadly true. Chowder is ok at best. We had high hopes and entered excited. Left very unsatisfied. read more

My gosh what a disappointment. We stopped here for lunch. Both of us ordered the snow crab sandwich. What we got was some tasteless crab slop on dried out store-bought bread. To add insult to injury the bill for two of these sandwiches, a beer and a pop was $40!! I've had much better food in an airport, and paid a lot less for it. read more

We were hungry and there aren't many places to choose from on the trail. I had the Corn and crab chowder which was tasty and served with a freshly baked small piece of bread. It was a thin soup which was probably better hit this Wright watcher than a heavily creamed or thicken soup. The view is beautiful. The chicken tenders with honey mustard was good; fries were tasty but could have been hot. With this beautiful setting they could take it up a notch or two. read more

Don't go. The soup is terrible. The calm chowder is teased like old fish with water. It is not fresh at all. We think it was a leftover from last night and waters down. It has sign "Wi-Fi free" on the wall but it is not worked at all. read more

My husband and I visited the Chowder House 15 yrs ago, returned last week and it is still as wonderful as we remember. The seafood chowder and the Neil's Habour chowder are so worth the little detour off the Cabot Trail. After a great hike at Jack Pines trail, we drove up to Neil Harbour 12:45 on a Thursday afternoon. We were given menus and our order was taken, but we waited twenty minutes were not even served water. We were especially disgruntled when we left lunchless because we had been watching three other parties get served. All of them had come in after we did! They have a number of different chowder options, but I opted for the seafood chowder to get a little bit of everything. I quite enjoyed it. 2012 is a new beginning for our old fav, The Chowder House. A new chef; a new menu. We had the best Ceasar's salad w a lite dressing & the freshest lettuce.
