Friendly and accommodating, this place isn't fancy...it has a "clam shack" atmosphere, but I'd travel a long way for this lobster-, crab- and fish-packed delight. This place was the only one that popped up on yelp, so we went there for lunch. It was the longest wait I've ever had for food in my life. The chowder was really good, with no fillers like potatoes, however everything else was sub par for the prices (I posted a pic of the menu and prices). Fish and chips was nothing to write home about. Neither was the lobster. The burger was decent, and probably the next best after the chowder. Given the quality of prices of the food, I have to say this was a let down. What a nice find! We decided to take a detour towards Neils Harbour close to lunch time and came across a line of people standing outside the simple red wooden building. The restaurant opens at noon, and we managed to be one of the early crowd to enjoy their first batch of freshly caught seafood. We ordered a fisherman's platter, some chowder, and a lobster sandwich. The fisherman's platter is a feast of fried fish fillet, a skewer of steamed shrimp, fried clam strips & scallops, mussels, mashed potatoes, and coleslaw. The seafood was all very fresh and delicious. I especially recommend the shrimp & the clam strips. The chowder was very lightly flavored (not creamy style) with fresh seafood bites. Lobster sandwich is served on regular sliced bread with mayo, and again very fresh. Overall, it was a very nice meal! read more

We ate here twice, and got the Seafood Delight for Two both times. We loved it -- a whole lobster, 8 crab legs, generous amounts of scallops, shrimps and mussels, plus fries, veggies and mashed potatoes to round it off. It is an awesome amount of awesome seafood! I agree with another review that was critical of the chowder. We ordered it once. It is a bit thin, and with no potatoes. Just come for the seafood, dip it in the yummy lemon butter sauce, and you will be very happy here! The views are amazing. We will definitely come back. It's a small local place. One night they were overrun with customers and a bit slow, but that's to be expected with a small local establishment dealing with a rush of summer tourists. read more

Wow! You could not get fresher seafood anywhere on earth. And the view of the harbor and ocean from the back picnic tables is unbeatable. Nowhere is there a prettier view with a more delicious lunch. We can recommend the scallops and the mussels but I'm sure it's all heavenly. And we watched a whole flock of gannets diving for fish right off shore for our entertainment. Loooved it. read more

Staff looked like they were really trying, but maybe just overwhelmed by the business that day. The chowder is not the thick and creamy style, but more brothy. Not much seafood in there, at least that day. What was in there tasted fresh. Disappointing, but there aren't a lot of places to eat while traveling around the north side of Cape Breton. The Chowder House came recommended by our hotel so we thought we'd give it a go. It seems tough to go wrong with a seafood restaurant next to a light house and fishing port in NS. We ordered the lobster sandwich but were served the lobster club. The lobster did not taste fresh. Also got the snow crab meal. The crab was very fresh and incredibly flavorful. If you go here, I recommend staying away from their sandwiches and going with just the seafood alone. read more

The location can't be beat and the chowder is quite good. I can't comment to the rest of the menu as I only had the chowder. The wait seemed inordinately long to place your order but the woman was super nice and you receive your order rather quickly. Please turn on your fan for the patrons patiently waiting to order. Great location! Lunch by the rocks with a Lighthouse serving ice cream nearby. The food sadly was Mediocre. The 26 dollar lobster dinner was rubbery (overcooked), so was the chowder, which was mostly thick cream. I guess our expectations were high for a place called The Chowder House. read more

Great spot for lunch right on the ocean. They fry seafood well and their chowder is tasty, encountered a huge while scallop in mine. But nothing here is the best I've had here or elsewhere hence the good but not great rating. Seemed a tad pricey for the portions and it gets really busy. Small dining room but there are also several picnic tables outside by the ocean. Seemed to be the main place to eat in Neil's harbor ( if not the only place ) besides the ice cream lighthouse next door. But the lighthouse didn't even have tiger ice cream when I went, sheesh! So if you're hankering for some fried seafood or chowder , you will do Ok here. read more

Fabulous lobster club sandwich was like a lobster BLT. The chowder was more on the milk side rather than the cream side and a little disappointing after eating cream based chowders. Unfortunately this was a VERY disappointing experience for us. We had heard great things about the Chowder House and were very much looking forward to our lunch there. The chowder was mediocre at best, and the sandwich was served on very boring bread. The fries were also mediocre. We chatted with someone beside us who lives in the area and has been coming here for over 15 years. He had lunch beside us and when he heard us talking about the food he told us that the food had really gone downhill this year. He said the chowder was not fresh and he wondered whether they had brought in the chowder from elsewhere. He said that he would no longer come here because it was such a shame as he said that this used to be the best food for many miles around here. Too bad. read more
