Churro with Dulce De Leche
Lori K.

We stopped for a light lunch and were the only customers. By the time we left. The dining room was filling up. The owner answered my questions and stepped us through the menu. We took a seat in the small dining room and within minutes complex aromas from our meal prep surrounded us. My belly started to rumble but within a short time our empanadas arrived. We decided on carne asada and pollo empanadas sharing both. Pollo was stuffed with peppers and onions. Very flavorful. The Carne be asada was only cubed beef. The flavor was fantastic but there were no vegetables. I purchased the Pico ( not the menu name) diced tomato onion oralegano red wine vinegar and oil. I ate the salsa with each empanada and thought it was fantastic and totally elevated the flavor of the empanada. I had read other reviews recommending the zuchinni. It did not disappoint! We love churos and had to order them here. These were unexpected. Maybe I'm used to mecican churos; fried dough, to covered in cinamon and sugar. As you can see in the photo- no cinamon or sugar sprinles (maybe the tiniest amount) House made dulche de leche is served on the side. Perfect for dipping the churo! I really enjoyed this churro. I think my husband was anticipating a more "mexican churro" experience. But he ate the entire stick! LOL. I'm excited to return - there are other empanadas flavors to try and that zuchinni will definately be ordred again!

I feel like it was WAY too small of portions for the cost. The food was tasty but really coated in fat/oil. I had to use quite a handful of napkins and place them under my empanadas. Some of the dough was raw on them. Apple fritters were tasty but the dough was also raw inside (outside was nice). We got 6 empanadas, fries, a burger (without fries) and two very small apple fritters (70$)

6 Six Empanadas, Dill Ranch

I loved how knowledgeable the staff was on the menu, they know it like the back of their hand and make your meal by hand. It's a small eat-in restaurant which gave me some European vibes for sure (if you've ever been). I'll definitely be back to try the lamb, chimichurri, pizza, and sandwiches. It's a gluten free paradise! We got 6 empanadas for around $25 and the ranch. We loved all of them but would say the chicken and pork are top tier tasty! We tried those two, plus the chorizo which was well seasoned, carne which was juicy, papa y queso which was like a fried pierogi, and the Espinoza which was spinach and cheese. They were all tasty and the ranch is made with fresh herbs hence the colors. It has a cooling effect like the a cucumber sauce. I would definitely recommend a sauce, they have a few with a kick to them which I think would enhance the empanadas! We also want to go back and try the churros, I wanted some but it was close to closing time so I opted to just come back another time.

My daughter and her husband invited me here. It was wonderful. The gluten free empanadas are great. The place was clean and the man was very nice and helpful. I will be back!

We came in on a Saturday evening and we were the only customers there. The inside is a little small but there are several tables and there's art on their wall (some even for sale). It was only Chef Joel and one other worker there but you can tell they care about their customers and food quality. It was our first time here so she explained the menu and let us take a seat wherever. Once you're ready to order, you head up to the counter. They advertise they are gluten free, soy free, grain free, nut and sugar free. I tried some of their empanadas and the "carne" was my favorite - packed with so much flavor. They are a bit greasy though. The steak was perfectly cooked to a medium rare temperature and the plantain chips were crispy and well seasoned. After eating here and trying their food, I'm surprised at how empty the restaurant was. They should totally have a line out the door!

Choripan is easily my favorite Argentine restaurant in Columbus, and it's not even close. The restaurant prides itself being free of gluten, nuts, grains, soy, sugar, and seed-oil, but the food there is so delicious that you would never know that all these things are missing from your order. The restaurant has a casual ambiance, the service is friendly and efficient, and the food is made fresh to order. We ordered the carne empanadas, the Lomito (grilled beef sandwich), the Pechuga (grilled chicken sandwich), and a side of plantain chips. All the dishes arrived at our table quickly, and they were all good-sized portions. The most amazing part of our dining experience at Choripan was that you couldn't tell that their food is free of so many ingredients that are common of everyday food items and still be this tasty! I highly recommend Choripan, and wish I lived closer so I could visit them more often.

My husband found out about this restaurant on Yelp and when he told me that it's an Argentinian restaurant, I was super excited to go. However, to be honest, when I found out that this place serves food free of gluten, nuts, grains, soy, sugar, and seed-oil, I lost interest right away. But still went because my husband wanted to. I am so glad that we tried out this place because the food was just delicious and there is no way that you would know that the food lacked gluten, nuts, grains, soy, and sugar. Inside the restaurant is very casual and cozy with great customer service. We ordered the carne empanadas, the Lomito, the Pechuga and plantain chips. Everything was great. I highly recommend this place, and we will definitely visit again!

Pato empanada and papa y queso empanada. Tostones and ensalada de col and potato salad!

I am gluten free and it's so hard to find places with dishes that look as good as the not GF food! This was amazing bc I could eat ANYTHING on the menu. The papa y queso empanada was my favorite but everything was amazing!!

Apple Fritter

My friend and I, both of whom can't have gluten, came for lunch this week, after wanting to check it out for awhile. It's a small little place, but there are several tables. You order at the window, and the employee was very helpful. We both ordered empanadas, as well as a dessert. Being vegetarian, there aren't tons of options for me here, but I got a root empanada and churros. My friend ordered a duck empanada and fritters. I thought my empanada was good, but the ratio of crispy dough to filling was a bit off, I couldn't taste the filling much. My friend enjoyed hers though. The star was the fritter- it was so dang delicious, and especially more so since getting gluten free fritters is a rarity. I'm sure meat-eaters would love it here more than me, but I'd come back for the fritter.

Chorpain was amazing, chef Joel Linik did an amazing job and my party had a great dinning experience. He was the only one in there and absolutely killed it! I look forward to coming back and trying more, in the meantime check out my pictures.

Absolutely Phenomenal!!!…read more I am a big fan of their food truck but if I'm being perfectly honest, I'm not a huge fan of food trucks in general. I don't like not have a place to sit and eat my food so I often don't visit them. But the year these guys won best food truck in Columbus, I had to go check them out. And boy did they not disappoint. BUT I never got to have them again because food truck woes. So when I found out they were getting a brick and morter I knew I had to go right away. So one rainy afternoon we went to check them out and it was even better than I remembered. We were blown away. The food was insanely delicious. Seriously better than I remember. We started with the sampler platter and Paxton my 5 year old could not get enough of the paella and although I wanted to hog it to myself, I gave it to him so I didn't have to share the empanada. They are that good! Also on the sampler is a rib and loaded fries. Easily enough for a meal. But we didn't stop there - we could resist the signature sandwich The Barroluco. Holy Cow - this sandwich blew it out of the park. Sliced meat, ham, cheese and an egg on super thin bread with lettuce and tomato. You guys - this doesn't sound like much but oh. em. gee you guys have to run and get this sandwich. It is life changing. You will never want to go anywhere else for a sandwich again. We were just there and I'm already trying to figure out how we can go back. Protip - this location is on pearl alley off gay street so look for a meter on gay and walk over!

I've been eating at El Arepazo since its early days on Pearl Alley when there was no where to sit…read more As a Colombian-American, I am proud of our heritage and cuisine, but there aren't always great places to eat besides at home. So it was some surprise to try bandeja paisa (traditional huge platter of various Colombian foods) and find it the best anywhere, including in Colombia. 25 years later and that still holds true. I have yet to find arepitas as exquisite of those of Carolina and Carlos, and they remain my standard (I think they are Venezolano, but does it matter? They are delicious and they are the best I've had). The cilantro salsa is unique and really adds to a lot of the foods they offer. My spouse is all about the maracuyá juice, and their options are worth sampling since its not usual for most Americans. For me it is comfort food not only as a Colombian-American, but as a (former) long-time resident of Columbus who at times craves reminders of the past. I've been to Pearl through its incarnations, then Gahanna, and now this Brewery District location. This one is my favorite of the three, with nice space and a great Latin atmosphere. We were there recently on a Saturday and had top-notch service, and even a visit from Carlos to reminisce about old times. El Arepazo is a Columbus institution. If you are curious about Latino food, and Colombian/Venezuelan cuisine in particular, it is THE place to start. Columbus is lucky to have a restaurant like this that beats out anything in Queens, Elizabeth NJ, Miami/Ft. Lauderdale, and would give places from Bogotá to Caracas a run for its money. It's legit, its delicious, it is attractively priced, the location is great, the staff is warm and friendly. 10/10. Stop reading and go eat there!

I am writing this review because I am extremely frustrated by the lack of communication I have…read moreexperienced with Carlos, the owner. On Saturday, August 8th, I took a friend to breakfast at First Watch, across the street from Arepazo. I parked in a legal parking space in front of Arepazo at approximately 10:30 AM and left around 12:30 PM. Later that day, I discovered that the front passenger door of my Jeep Grand Cherokee had been badly dented. At first, it looked as though someone had purposely kicked it. I retraced everywhere I had been that day in an attempt to determine exactly what happened. After reviewing my home security camera footage, I was able to narrow down when the damage occurred. The footage clearly showed that when I backed out of my garage to go to breakfast that morning, my passenger door was undamaged. When I returned home after breakfast, the damage was clearly visible. A few days later, after Arepazo reopened following Sunday, I called the restaurant and spoke directly with Carlos. I explained what had happened and told him that I had noticed security cameras on the restaurant that appeared to be pointed toward the area where my Jeep had been parked. Carlos confirmed that the cameras were working, although he told me the resolution probably would not be good enough to identify someone's face. I explained that I wasn't concerned about identifying a face--I simply wanted to know what happened to my vehicle. Carlos assured me that he would help me figure out what happened and promised to get back to me. It has now been two weeks. My insurance estimator has since inspected the Jeep and determined that the damage is consistent with someone's body having been slammed into the passenger door. The estimated repair cost is approximately $3,300. Despite Carlos telling me he would help, I have not heard from him. I have called several times and left messages with multiple staff members, including his manager, Brent. On Tuesday, August 18th, at approximately 6:30 PM, I finally went to Arepazo in person. I spoke with several employees, including Brent. Brent went into the back to call Carlos. After approximately 15 minutes, he returned and told me that he had just spoken with Carlos and assured me that Carlos would contact me. He still has not. Is this a review of the food at Arepazo Tapas Bar and Grille? No. Is it a review of the restaurant's service? Not exactly. But I do believe it says something about how the owner treats people. I wasn't asking Carlos to pay for the damage. I wasn't accusing Arepazo or any of its employees of causing it. I was simply asking him to follow through on his promise to check security footage that might show what happened to my vehicle while it was parked directly in front of his restaurant. I even told Carlos and Brent that I would gladly come back and eat at Arepazo if they would simply help me with the security footage. Apparently, after two weeks, several phone calls, multiple messages, an in-person visit, and two separate assurances that Carlos would contact me, getting back to me isn't a priority. That's disappointing. Sometimes how a business owner treats someone when there is absolutely nothing in it for him says more about the business than the food ever could. I guess Arepazo has enough business that Carlos doesn't need mine--or that of the friends and family I might otherwise have recommended to his restaurant.

They have this great system where there's a little table tent and you stand it up if you need something, and a staff member appears quickly. Lay it down and they leave you be. Genius. The food is absolutely fabulous! We have dined here twice. Both times we came early and chose a low top in the bar/lounge because they have an unbeatable happy hour applicable to cocktails, draft beers and several of the delectable appetizers. 4 to 6 pm. So far we've had the Elote corn bites, Coco bites, fried Yuca and the crab bites. 5 stars for all though the Yuca was the weakest link because I'd like it so much better boiled. Their sauces just dance on your tongue. The sides, notably the black beans and garlic potato salad, are superb. And don't miss those Latin cocktails! They were agreeeable to split a main for us, the Arroz con Pollo which had plenty of tender chicken and was full of flavor. On a second visit we each got our own main. So we've had a lot of different dishes here and they were all excellent. My rating is 4 1/2 stars, rounding up due to all of the above. The minus half star is due to one negative. When you're done, the waitress arrives with a hand held electronic device and says 'I can take your payment right here.' Yeah, I expect you to take my payment at the table, AFTER you've given us our bill, then quietly withdrew for a bit while we look over our bill, decide if we're paying cash or card, and also consider how much we plan to tip. I did not like this at ALL, particularly since she did not also say "or would you like a printed bill." We did in fact request and receive a bill to handle in the normal way. So don't feel pressured to just hand over your credit card. This is a practice I would expect from a big corporate chain, not a Mom & Pop. But I love everything else about El Meson.
