Chops Grill is the branded steakhouses on Royal Caribbean ships. My brother and I had the opportunity to have lunch on the 7th day, of our week long cruise on the Symphony of the Seas out of Miami. It was quite good.
The lunch was another of on the prepaid meals that my brother had purchased during a Black Friday special, with the 3 course menu being 40% off normal price of $30. It's a smaller menu than dinner, but does include an 8oz filet as a choice.
We started with a different bread basket, which included their mini-pretzel roll and an unidentified small roll, that I have not been able to get a name for. It resembles a mini-baguette, and one site called it a 'slug' bread, but that doesn't sound right. Anyway...it was the best bread roll I've ever had on a cruise boat, and I wish I've eaten more.
Appetizer was colossal shrimp cocktail: shrimp is actually graded for size, with colossal meaning 8-10 per pound...and these shrimp were that size, meaning the plate of 4 was a half pound total. Due to a misunderstanding, our waiter brought me two plates, so ate a lot of shrimp that day. I wish the cocktail sauce had a lot more horseradish...if one is going to get a colossal shrimp cocktail in a steakhouse, the cocktail sauce should 'hurt'. Also tried the beef carpaccio...it was OK. It had been sitting for a bit, so the very thin raw pieces stuck to the plate and were a bit messy to eat.
The 8 oz filet had been cooked as requested to medium, and had a crust. High temperature ovens don't seem to be allowed on a cruise boat, so high end steak cuts tend to come out suboptimal...but this was decent. They actually give you a real steak knife too.
Also took a bite out of their dry aged steak burger. At specialty restaurants, the food is cooked on-site so they will take modification requests. We asked for the burger to have lettuce, tomato, pickles, and onion; they obliged. But wouldn't choose it over the filet.
We tried the various sides (gruyere cheese tots, asparagus, mashed potatoes, and mac and cheese). All of it had good flavor, but had been sitting too long before being served. I remember the cheese tots being really good the last time I tried, but this time, it tasted more like a luke-warm Spanish croquette...decent, but not close to its potential.
Their selection of wines is smaller, but since all of it is available in house, the bottle will be brought to your table to open, even if ordered by the glass. It's a lot better experience than at the main dining rooms, where the wine glasses are filled in a back room for all guests. And steak is one dish that I really like with red wine.
Ended up skipping dessert (why do the servers on a cruise boat always seem so disappointed when you tell them 'No dessert'?) and got the check. It had the expected zero balance, but my brother added additional tip on top of the mandatory 18% that he had already prepaid. read more
