About 5 months ago, I stopped in and the cracklings had clearly been sitting for a while, they were tough. I explained my concern and even offered to pay extra just to have a fresh batch cooked. After going back and forth, they finally made them fresh, and they were exactly what I wanted. Fast forward to today, I called ahead and specifically asked for fresh cracklings. The young man on the phone said okay, no problem. I walk in 5 minutes later and there's already a bag waiting. I asked where they came from and she told me they were cooked that morning. That was an immediate no for me. If I'm spending $21 for a pound, I don't want tough, sitting all day cracklings. Go ahead and put those back. I ended up trying the boudin balls, big mistake. You could tell they had been sitting too. At that point, I didn't even have the energy to go back and forth or ask for a manager. Honestly, it should be a given. The Gar has a flavor in between chicken and fish and has a tougher texture so I gave mine away after a few bites to another family member who had been staring at me, hoping I wouldn't like it and would want to give it away! I did like the buffalo though. It looked like a small rib bone. Several of my family members were skeptical because they were remembering buffalo fish as having lots of small bones. This, however; was one bone the size of a large finger and the rest was meat. Worry not and enjoy.

The location is great and so is the service. The African American sister who helped us was friendly, professional and very knowledgeable, even directing us to the other location at Hawn. We don't remember her name but she is the reason that we will always come here. Her efficiency and multi-tasking are top notch. This store is well organized, with clearly marked spices, sauces, condiments and a wide variety of side dishes. The freezers were packed with everything from Gar, crab, shrimp and lobsters to stuffed meats. Fresh and cooked foods are readily available, as well as a menu on the A frame showing the day's special. There is also a variety of specialty items that we didn't expect to find but were truly delighted to pick up. We left with three bags full of delicious groceries. It is a lean catfish without all of the fatty underside that I hate so much!
