Van Hoorebeke is known for being one of the first to open up his kitchen to viewing from the public, thus the clear floor window into their kitchen that's viewable from the street. We tried the hazelnut praline and while it was tasty and the service was friendly it wasn't enough of a standout to purchase for us. To be honest I probably would have chosen a different flavor for the tour as it was slightly unmemorable. All that being said, it's good chocolate for the value so I would recommend stopping in if you're visiting Ghent.

The only thing better than the chocolate was the customer service. The young man working educated us on the Ghent Dragon, provided us with a few local restaurant recommendations and a brief lesson on Belgian fries and local spots. He also informed us that the chocolates are made by Sophie herself. Sophie is doing a great job in both the chocolate business and in hiring friendly, competent people. It was a pleasure shopping there.

Staff are attentive and run around with a fury to keep up with the clientele coming and going. The menu is extensive but we settled on each having a Waffle Gravensteen which comes with chocolate sauce, blueberries. vanilla ice cream and a red (red fruit coulis) topping sauce on the ice cream. We accompanied that with a warm chocolate milk drink. Both were purely amazing, although the waffle was a bit crunchy compared to others I have tried. The atmosphere is vibrant and fun, and you'll get a good dessert fix, best for an afternoon treat. It appears to primarily cater to tourists, yet they seem to keep the quality good. It was good, as all the spots on our tour were, but it didn't have that wow factor and was slightly unmemorable. It is very centrally located and a bit easier to shop in due to it's layout and size, so overall while they weren't my favorite I think it's easy to stop in here while visiting some of the other local chocolate shops and if the person you're buying for is a Smurfs fan this would definitely be the place to go.

Nicholas Vanaise makes his own, surprisingly flavoured, chocolates and sells them here. He's in…read morethe same league as Paul Young, L'artisan du chocolat, and William Curley in London, though different. His flavours range from Indian spices to black truffle, to yuzu (citrus) caramel, to fruits and lavender. Each piece is beautifully decorated, and the presentation is immaculate. I still prefer the London guys, but Yuzu was definitely a chocolate experience and at half the price of London shops, well worth it! (Also, Nicholas is charming, speaks perfect English, and recommended a great restaurant called Vintage on Onderbergen).
