Van Hoorebeke is known for being one of the first to open up his kitchen to viewing from the public, thus the clear floor window into their kitchen that's viewable from the street. We tried the hazelnut praline and while it was tasty and the service was friendly it wasn't enough of a standout to purchase for us. To be honest I probably would have chosen a different flavor for the tour as it was slightly unmemorable. All that being said, it's good chocolate for the value so I would recommend stopping in if you're visiting Ghent.

I saw quite a lot of recommendations for this shop in Gent so I decided to pop in because I wanted…read moreto buy some chocolate to bring back home to the US. I was a little overwhelmed with the different options they had, so I spent a good amount of time there. I ended up picking up a few of their pre-packaged truffle assortments and also got a few individual truffles for me to eat. One of the clear case boxes unfortunately got severely squished in my suitcase, so I actually ended up eating them since they were not in a presentable state haha. Standouts of the ones I tried have to include passion fruit and macadamia. Yuzu is also high up there too. I think these were just more interesting flavors and more preferable to my own tastes. They're a solid choice for nice chocolate. Was my mind blown away? Not really, but the chocolates are high quality, handmade, crafted well, and certainly a LOT cheaper than what you can get in the US. My favorites were very delicious, and I would get them again or ask someone to bring them back if the opportunity ever presented itself.

Quality wise, they're about on par with Leonidas on the lower end of what you can find in Ghent. The chocolate is good for it's price point, but not up to the level of The Chocolate Maker or Chocolatier Deduytschaever. It's well made touristy chocolate. The service was helpful and the space is welcoming and open even though it's smaller so overall, while it's not the best Ghent has to offer it's not bad for what it is.

Theo not only carries its own brand but is a reseller so the location is chock full of other brands that line the walls, so you can also pick up Neuhaus Chocolates if you don't have time to stop by one of their locations. I purchased one of the Theo-branded gold ball bags and while I enjoyed the tasting they'd provided I found many of the balls to have more salt than others, so they weren't consistently flavored. The service was friendly and helpful and the store is right next to our favorite chocolatier, so all in all it's definitely worth a stop into if you're visiting Ghent.

I quickly chose a couple pre bagged candies and intended on buying a few chocolates as well but the tourists were still planted in front of the door, constantly changing their mind, asking for additional things, getting confused, asking more questions, wanting additional things, then getting confused again. I waited quite a bit for them and when they decided to add in more items (which they were confused about again) I finally called it and put everything back, having to edge around them again to push my way out. I'd like to see Duman add in a second associate for the back counter, ask customers to keep the doorway clear, and if the guest is unsure of what they want and there's a line, move on to the next customer and give them time to think about it. In all in, with the current shop setup I don't think I'll be back.

That being said there is a minimum $10 euro credit card charge and the sweets were varying levels of neutral to bad. Their Ghent nose had an extremely unpleasant aftertaste that the local Ghent vendor's noses lack and the other chocolates were all clearly not fresh, several also having a bad aftertaste. We threw several away half eaten. Overall, Verheecke appears to be extremely touristy with poor quality wares and I would absolutely skip them.
