I had ordered a birthday cake here once for pick up and it was great so I decided to return to pick up 3 mini cakes for takeout to celebrate a friends birthday. I arrived right at opening time on a Saturday, and they had all their food items out, and were just placing the description cards on the display. Another family had entered just before me, but otherwise the place was empty. The interior of the store is minimal and clean, very nice quiet spot to enjoy some of their goodies. I ended up getting 3 pastries in addition to the mini-cakes since the staff reminded me that any order of 6 items would be tax-free, and the selection was so appealing that day that I couldn't resist! Flavour, quality, and presentation was amazing, just as I expected based on the birthday cake I had tried from here. I loved everything! Such a spot for great pick me up treat. One of the best patisserie in Markham. I always order cake for celebration and get their Danish, croissants for breakfast. Bittersweet Chocolate raspberry cake is my favourite. Not only the cake is beautiful but the balanced flavour of chocolate and raspberry are to die for. The mocha pillow croissant is so fluffy and crispy outside with explosive filling. The savoury croissants are always inventive and creative, which is why we regularly return to Cho-Kwok-Lat. they also make delicious sweets. I wish I had taken a photo of it!! Ordered the peach bichon and gateau basque as a noon pick me up. First time trying both types of pastries because I never seen these available at other Toronto bakeries. The peach bichon had peach chunks, instead of of a puree like a lemon bichon, good but different than what I'm used to. The gateau basque had pear and was not too sweet. Also ordered the mille feuille and 70% chocolate bar. Usually not a fan of Mille feuille but this was amazing, the flavours worked so well together! FYI the Mille feuille is also only available during weekends. Also got the 70% chocolate bar because I love everything chocolate, tasted good but wouldn't get this again because the flavours were too safe. I'd come back and try other fusion flavours. Nestled on the streets of Main Street Markham you can find this patisserie. Walked in on the weekend to crab some croissants and the store as empty. Decor was nice and inviting though. The case of baked goods are at the end of the store and it's displayed in a glass case. I ended up grabbing a couple of croissants since it was my first time and wanted to try both sweet and savoury ones. I thought the savoury croissants are a little bit oily when you touch it and definitely coats your mouth with oily when you're biting into it. The texture is flakey though! The balance of the buttercream, sponge and chocolate was OK but wished it had more layers. # William Noir: They do use good quality chocolate, but the balance of the other ingredients that should be supporting this chocolate flavor - such as pear compote, salted caramel, coffee-crunch - were again, "too much". Each ingredient was fighting with each other rather than harmonizing. # Paris-Brest: Choux pastry was not crisp. Cream, mascarpone and coulis - all with wild strawberry flavor. Lacks texture. The taste was so, so. The presentations are unique and the decorations are flashy but lacks sophistication and detail. Each item feels a trapping of a motivated patissier where he has so many ideas he wants to execute but then the food lacks focus. Ouch. But the service was super friendly and kind. Love this neighborhood in east Markham! I love their pastries and cakes - it's not too sweet which is perfect for the "Asian preferred level of sweetness". Their savoury selections are great, particularly the beef sausage and the miso eggplant! Cakes are delicious - Earl grey js spot on and the berry chocolate combo of the Ma cherie is such a delight! This little patisserie sits on Main Street Markham Road. It's mainly street parking but you can also park in one of the lots for Main Street. I had come in for 2 occasions, both of which were quite satisfying. The first time we had ordered online via their website the Yule log. It was a less than 48 hours but upon texting the number on their Facebook site (which leads directly to Chris the chef!!) He provided amazing swift customer service and we were able to pick up about 2 days after despite the website not allowing it (coz it was late already. The log was beautifully done, but a little smaller than expected but still very much decadent. The chestnut wasn't very obvious but the chocolate was very good. The second time, we dropped by to pick up some pastries and a couple of cakes (Mon Mont, chocolate bar and Matcha Opera). They were all very well done. Like another reviewer said, there is a strawberry inside the Mon Mont and it's personal preference. We thought it was interesting and paired decent but yes we would also prefer more chestnut. Not that the dessert wasn't good, we just liked more nut Nonetheless customer service is always good and we are always proud to support local! read more

I got to try two desserts - Paris-Brest - Wild Strawberry and Ma Chérie and these were quite good. I must've chosen the wrong desserts to try the first time around. The Paris-Brest - Wild Strawberry has Pâte à Choux, wild strawberry cremeux, wild strawberry mascarpone, and wild strawberry coulis. Since we didn't eat this until a few hours after it was purchased the bottom layer was starting to get a bit soggy. Don't put off eating this delicious dessert :P. The filling was so tasty. The strawberry flavour really came through without being overly sweet and the contrasting texture from the Pâte à Choux worked so well. The Ma Chérie has bittersweet chocolate biscuit, cherry & raspberry compote, caramel crunch, ruby chocolate chantilly, and cherry blossom tea jelly. I'm not really a fan of jelly so this top layer didn't appeal to me and I didn't taste the tea. I liked the crunch the chocolate biscuit provided. Texture was creamy and size was perfect for an afternoon snack with a book and coffee or tea. Breads and croissant from TooGoodToGo showcased their selection which was still quite good. Kept in the fridge and enjoyed after from reheating was good day after. It was no longer so good 2 or 3 days after. Most items averaged $7 to $9 so it is definitely a splurge. Had the lovely pleasure of trying these delicious confections the other weekend as a birthday treat from one of my closest friends. Not only do these look like gorgeous pieces of art but they tasted pretty amazing too. Some highlights include (favourite being first): 1. Exotic Coconut - Mango Passion Fruit: This was hands down my favourite one. I am a sucker for fruity palettes especially mango passion fruit so it was right up my alley. It had a beautiful delicate flower on top made up of white chocolate and the body itself had this crunch at the bottom. What a great contrast in textures. Nothing was too sweet or overbearing. 2. Rocher - Milk Chocolate Praline: Honestly you can never go wrong with anything that tastes like Ferror Roche - am I right or am I right? 3. Paris-Brest - Wild Strawberry: As I mentioned before, I really like fruity palettes and thus, I really love strawberry. This was such an interesting creation. The middle cremeux/mascarpone part tasted like an actual strawberry. Not that fake strawberry flavour. It was so good! You gotta eat this one the day of cause the top and bottom part need to stay crunchy as part of the experience. I made the mistake of putting half of it in the fridge and eating it the next day and it didn't taste as good. 4. Tart Au Citron: This one was soooo pretty! The key lime foam/lemon curd looked like a heavenly pillow. I truly appreciate the artistry put into these creations. This one tasted like a lemon square tbh but a fancy one. 5. The name of the last one I had isn't listed on the website but it basically tasted like a Raspberry Viva Puff but looked super fancy. Took me back to elementary school days as a recess snack. ChoKwokLat is a little pastry store recommended by lots of people. I am happy that I have a chance to try it today. I ordered 3 different types of dessert pastries. One is matcha cream, one is Montblanc, one is cream brulee. Out of the 3, cream brulee is the best and actually I highly recommend. I like the matcha cream as well, but just not much as the cream brulee. Montblanc unfortunately is a bit disappointed. I expect more chestnut in the middle, but end up with the strawberry filling. I was finally able to try a couple desserts from here a few weeks ago, after eyeing this place for a whole year! Too bad we are in a pandemic- I really wish I could sit in there, hang out with friends and eat great desserts. It's so cute inside and gives cozy-main-street-cafe vibes. I know Chris' specialty is chocolate, so I was expecting the Rocher to be amazing- and it was! The chocolate was creamy and rich, but not too heavy or sweet at all. Picked up a cruffin one day and a jar of the dragees chocolate. The first time I tried the cruffin it was amazing with the custard in the middle, for some reason that day all the custard went to the bottom and wasn't really creamy. Nonetheless it was stilll good. The orange hazelnut praline is one of the popular chocolate Chris sells and it's amazing, can't just eat one! I also went another day to pick up the rocher cake, dragees and ruby chocolate bar for a friends birthday and she loved it. She did not know this amazing spot was near her house. I recently visit Cho-Kwok-Lat to sample Chris' magical creations after seeing my fellow food accounts rave about the amazing quality of this place. Upon entering the premise, it's nice and warm to welcome any visitor looking for a sit-down snack or for an on-the-go order. Honestly, why bother visiting Paris when you can visit this place for some of the most innovative desserts you will ever have. Not going to lie, if I were to have one last dessert on this earth, it would have to be the Exotic Coconut - Mango Passion Fruit. It's one of the best crafted and intelligent desserts I ever had in my life. Starting with a hazelnut sponge cake, it serves as an igloo for the Mango Passionfruit Cremeux which serves as a nice sour element to balance the sweetness of the dessert with the Coconut Mousse and Praline Feuilletine. Was out for a walk the other day with the family and have been meaning to try this place. Finally went in. Place was pretty empty during the day. Owner was at the counter, very knowledgeable and friendly. Everything looks very well made. Ordered a banana tart, plum tart some grape thing, one gourmet chocolate for my daughter and a blue berry iced tea for myself. This run just over $30. It's a bit pricy but you get what you pay for. My wife really liked the crust on the tarts. I loved the tart on the plum tart. My daughter gave me a small taste of the chocolate ball which was quite nice. There are many things to try on future visits, they sell spreads and brittles. Owner says they make custom cakes as well with 48 hr notice which is good to know for future purchases. read more

We traded notes about downtown places we liked for croissant (I'm a fan of Emmer, Le Beau, Robinson Bread). He was super kind enough to share about where he came from and knowing I was a downtown person looking for pastry in his area, he gave me a freebie to try too! Mind you, it was probably a slow day, and he was feeling extra nice, I'm not suggesting yelpers to chat him up for freebies. I ordered a 6 Bichon - basil peach - it smelled totally great! He was nice enough to remind me he can reheat this for me to eat on the road. The pasty dense for this which is perfect. I wish they were fresh peaches, maybe they will be when they are in season? That was just my minor thing about it. I think I will come back to try his other cakes. I really enjoyed Ma Cherie! It's a Cherry & Raspberry top, I think it's a mousse? Tried their black sesame and strawberry cake for the first time. it was a light chiffon cake with very creamy black sesame mousse inside. I love that there's some kind of chocolate crunch bits inside the cake but I wished I got that in every bite. While I love the cake combination, the strawberries weren't sweet at all. Review is for their black sesame cake only. While I believe ChoKwokLat is known for their chocolate desserts, my family tends to favour other flavours over chocolate, so I decided to try their black sesame cake instead. While it was beautifully crafted and it was evident that the cake is black sesame, the flavours were a bit lacking and was nothing out of the ordinary, which made me feel a bit disappointed given the price. The cake itself was nice and soft, but flavours were very subtle. Strawberries were fresh and did pair well with the cake, and the cream was nice and delicate. Overall the cake was good, but not what I expected. I want to try their chocolate ones though, and the pastries also look amazing! Will go back for those and give another review then. read more

Their croissants are very fluffy and moist inside, fairly buttery but not greasy and lightly crisp on the outside. If you want something similar but with a bit more sweetness, you can go for their Jasmine Tea Poached Pear danish which is also very delectable with a mild sweetness from the pears. Impressive pastry presentation & quality. Its price is typical of fancy dessert shops, but definitely within reason for what you get! Also, worth mentioning that the pastry chef has won international awards for his chocolates & pastry creations!! I've tried the following: BAKED FIG FRUIT TART (4/5): interesting & distinct almond taste from the almond-based crust. Great combo of cream, figs, pumpkin seeds, with that crust that just crumbles in your mouth. MANDARIN BLOOD ORANGE DANISH (4.5/5): Loved the crisp pastry layers surrounding the surprisingly juicy slice of citrus fruit in the middle. CREME BRULEE CRUFFIN (3.5/5): had a glazed sugar crunch and croissant texture with a dollop of custard in the middle. REGULAR and PEAR CROISSANT (3/5): I'm usually not a croissant fan because it's messy to eat. Biting into Cho-Kwok-Lats croissants leaves lots of thin flaky layers, but if you're a croissant fan, you'd probably like it. PECAN TART (3/5): I'm normally not a fan of butter tarts because there's too much sweet/butter filling. HOWEVER, this pecan tart has a balanced ratio of butter-tart-like filling with more pecans & nicely done pastry dough. PARIS BREST (3.5/5): the craquelin choux pastry was on the softer side and although the raspberry flavour was nice, it didn't blow my mind. 70% CHOCOLATE BAR (4/5): really rich & heavy chocolate flavours, I did especially like textures that the airy wafers had on the sides! Lastly, I've gotten to really appreciate his chocolate creations as well...they make for great gifts too!
