Like most of you I was extremely cautious about the idea of buying a mattress (unseen) from an online source. The only reason I even remotely considered this as an option is that my father is a chiropractor and mentioned ChiroSlumber...he liked that the company was started by a chiropractor (someone who actually specializes in spines) and that they used less toxic/more organic materials than other mattress companies. I called Ron who was very passionate about the company and answered all of my questions. He assured me I could try the mattress for 120 days and return it if I didn't like it. He is a very warm, courteous person who obviously still values southern hospitality.
However, I still wasn't convinced, so I went to an actual mattress store. I laid on 15 different beds and it was like princess and the pea, or goldilocks or something...hard to find something just right. I guess I am a bit of a mattress snob (or perhaps my spine has expensive taste) because the only one I liked was a TEMPUR-Contour Rhapsody Luxe which you can see on their website retails for $3,499 on their website. It is described as medium-firm. So, sheerly off the considerable difference in price I was leaning toward trying the ChiroSlumber.
I called Ron again (poor guy, I certainly wasn't making it easy for him but he was polite as ever). I told him I like a firm mattress, and I laid on a Tempur-pedic and really liked it. He said something that made perfect sense to me, he said: "It's not about laying on a mattress and liking it...It's about how you feel when you wake up in the morning." This to me made perfect sense and with Ron's help I selected the Polar Series as it is firmer than the CoolMax.
I've had this bed for two weeks now and no longer wake up with headaches, back pain, etc. I work out avidly and I even feel less sore "next day" from my gym work outs than I used to previously.
The other reviews are correct: there is an off-gassing from the mattress for the first few days. I would not plan to sleep on it for a bit and just let it "rest" near somewhere with a window open. Also, it comes in an 100 lb. box. I live on a 3rd floor walk up so as you can imagine, that was fun. It doesn't affect the star rating I'm giving, but certainly something to plan for.
This (ChiroSlumber) is without a doubt the best kept secret in the mattress industry. Tempur-Pedic can charge so much because they have absolutely no competition in stores. Doesn't mean their product is of higher quality. So if you're willing to "take the risk" (which has an awesome return policy anyway) and try ChiroSlumber, you will likely be saving yourself thousands of dollars for a similar quality mattress through a small, reputable company. read more
