We weren't offered a second round of drinks until after we'd finished our food, and only got water with the bill. Weirdly at this point the server became super friendly - maybe she'd received some good news halfway through our meal, or was happy we were the last customers! Food-wise the cheese fondue and nachos with everything selection I don't think wowed anyone but were nice enough. My tacos were all fine although completely disintegrated once I added sauces. The carne asada was definitely more like braised meat than steak, but still tasted fine. The shrimp was again fine but unremarkable. Overall the taste couldn't compare to the fish tacos over at Fusion Lab. My taco dorado had the nicest filling (guacamole, chorizo) but it wasn't the best deep-fried taste - not sure whether that's just my preference or something about the oil but would give them the benefit of the doubt. The huitaloche enchilada wasn't that exciting in the end - basically a sort of mushroom flavour, I wouldn't go for it unless you lurve mushrooms. I think Yayo is right this would be good as a late night place for some snacks after drinking, however it seems to close by 11 even on Saturday so they might be missing a trick there. Overall I wouldn't say no to going back but nor would I suggest it.

We dine at Chiquitos on a semi regular basis so I thought that it was about time that I wrote a…read morereview! We made our pilgrimage on a Saturday night with the aim of having a quick dinner out. For those of you who are familiar with the location, you'll know that this is right next to the cinema; on a Saturday night, there was little to no chance that we would get a table quickly, but lets call it the hunger over-riding common sense. The wait was about 40 minutes (and usually we wouldn't wait, but we'd made our decision and didn't have the energy to want to go anywhere else). We were given a pager and pointed in the direction of the bar - added the drinks to the bill and found ourselves a table outside in the sun - by the time our table was ready I'd kind of forgotten that I wasn't just there for a drink! Now, onto the food - it's pegged as a Tex-Mex restaurant, and the menu is varied and quite wide ranging within that category... The Tex seems to mostly be burgers and ribs (with some chicken thrown in) and the Mex has some of the favourites; Burritos, Quesadillas, Fajitas and Enchilladas feature heavily, with a variety of fillings. I opted for the Peri Chicken fajita. These are served on a brilliant sizzle plate - a hunk of cast iron, heated until it's super hot, and your food is served on that - it's a great presentational piece, and it keeps everything nice and hot... The Fajita is served with sour cream, guac and salsa, with some cheese thrown in. You're expected to build your own - just the way nature intended. The portion is just the right size, and I was left pleasantly full. The restaurant has recently been re-arranged (rather than renovated) and hats have appeared. Yes, the good old Mexican 10-gallon is representing in the most stereotypical way you can think of! If you're heading to the cinema, you could do worse than Chiquitos.

It's been a long time since I've dined here and it was only because I had a discount offer we decided to try it again, as mentioned above it always starts so well. We were seated quickly and a drinks order taken. I perused the extensive menu, all the dishes sounded mouth wateringly tempting and the prices make you think "hmmm must be good if they can get away with charging that!" But then the food arrives and it all starts going horribly wrong, we shared a starter of loaded potato skins, it was about £4.65 and it's basically a jacket potato, cut in half with some cheese and sour cream and a little bit of bacon should you want it. They taste like they were prepared about a week ago in some Mexican sweatshop, this must be one of the highest mark ups in history for one potato and a sprinkle of cheese, the speed at which it came suggest that they are kept in create next to the 'secret Mexican spices'. For the mains we had what was supposed to be a succulent breaded chicken breast, cooked in authentic spices. What it looked like was some deep fried brown puck and the palest chips, my Nan would have been ashamed to serve that plate to someone. We also had BBQ Chicken fajitas and at nearly £14.00 I was expecting something good, apart from the drama which is the dish being brought sizzling to your table... the taste is mediocre. The BBQ sauce is too sweet and really there was only enough chicken for two pieces per (small) wrap. I like most things in wrap form so I can't say that I didn't enjoy the meal, but had I been paying full price I think that may have made me more disappointed. Dessert came in the form of what was called a Warm Brownie Stack, this was barely warm and was not stacked, just your bog standard brownie really. The brownie tasted dry and the ice cream was low grade. We also had the Churros which were cooked properly although they no longer serve with a maple syrup option, just chocolate and toffee, which were ok if again over sweet. I will say that our waitress was very friendly and efficient; she was really easy to chat to and could not be faulted at all. Due to the location of this Chiquitos, most of the diners are here on their way to the cinema rather than people travelling far and wide for the experience. Chiquitos are aware of this and charge as much as they think they can get away with whilst serving processed unauthentic food. If you are wanting authentic Mexican food, then do not dine here, the authenticities end with the name of the dish, if you want somewhere with a lively atmosphere, walking distance to the cinema and don't mind paying the premium for the privilege, then it may be suitable option.

Our server looked lile she would rather be somewhere else but sorted our drinks and food pretty promptly. The nachos were quite good but would give the chicken wings and fries a miss. Tacos come without much sauce and you basically just add your own bottled condiments - a really good place would make their own or serve with more punch. Interestingly, you can see a major difference in my photos of the tacos versus Jonny's - his generally look much better, they do come with a sauce on the side and unlike mine aren't covered in iceberg lettuce, which seldom improves anything. The burritos looked good and thought it was cool they come with a pot of sour cream for you too add to taste. Drinks wise only one beer on tap was available which is perhaps an indication of how not busy they are. Even though it is a "chain", I like Mexican food and the person who is behind it won Masterchef years ago and there most be a reason why she has several branches of Wahaca around the country (I think about 27) and they have been around for more than 10 years. We decided to order a few things each and basically share. The friendly, helpful waitress, suggested how many of the different types of items to get per person. We got mostly tacos and was suggested to get either 2 each (plus a side) or 3 each. We had: Chargrilled steak taco Battered cod taco Carnitas taco (which was one of the specials) Plantain taco Buttermilk chicken taco Black bean & three cheese quesadillas Overall they all tasted good. I am not that big a fan of plantain so it just tasted OK. Also, I thought I didn't like black beans (I like the ones you have in Chinese dishes - the fermented dried ones) but I really liked the quesadillas. Maybe it was the combination with the cheese. The tacos were good - my favourite was the buttermilk chicken ones. (I didn't specifically say anything about coriander so luckily it was just mostly on the top of the tacos - and not too much. The food we had was all great - tasty crab and avocado tostadas, chicken tinga taco's and a really nice guac with nacho's. Having cooked a number of recipes (and the Tinga being a regular go-to meal) from Thomasina's cookery books, I still have to say mine taste better though ;-P Prices were fairly decent but the beer selection needs improving a lot. They just sell Mexican lager which isn't too shocking I can imagine but there's no other options in terms of beers and even Las Iguanas now sells Mexican IPA, Wheat Beers etc. Put it this way - I was wanting a beer but just decided to keep my money in my pocket and drink water. I'm sure I'll be back again regularly as it's the best restaurant Mexican in town (Pancho's will always be getting my casual burrito money though) - a welcome addition to the foodie scene.

As usual I have to look at the menu before hand to see whether it would" fit my vibe and I had a hankering for Mexican style food so this was my first option when I knew I was going to the city. The restaurant is in the trendy northern quarter of Manchester, on one of the streets that has been closed off so restaurants can have outdoor seating... and they look great ... I'd love to go back later in the day and enjoy a few drinks and some food when it's evening. Back to this visit ... I walked passed around 1130 because in my head I thought it opened at that time ... but it opens at 12 ... but it was good for me to find the building, have a last look at the menu and make a decision on the food I was going to have. When I went back at opening time (I always find it useful and handy for me to get entry into a restaurant when it's open ... it's a lot harder and more illegal when it isn't ) I was the first customer. I waited a little bit while the staff were getting everything sorted, went straight to a table and within minutes the lovely server came over to take my order. I went for the chicken blasts (Korean bbq flavour ... which from looking back at their name and flavour .. I should have realised something), the Birria burrito and the Fanta (wasn't feeling like a boozy drink this time). My order got put into the kitchen and I just had to wait for it then ... the server came back over and apologised my drink was taking a bit to arrive as another member of staff had to go get ice ... but to be honest, I wasn't waiting too long and I honestly didn't mind. When my order came I looked it over and it looked DELICIOUS. I started with trying the chicken and it was so tasty and crunchy and perfect ... and then the heat kicked in (but it was fine ... I'm just not used to heat). So there I was, restaurant getting busier, and me sat there looking at the window ... crying in public (not crying crying but heat tears) ... thank god for that ice. Went to my burrito and the beef was to die for ... there was a nice crunch to it's contents, and there were fries inside which I've never had before and it was just amazing. 3 napkins and Niagara Falls worth of tears later, I had finished ... ice in my mouth to try and quench the heat. The server apologised again for taking so long with the bill but to be honest, it was my fault for not saying I wanted it and it had got busy so, again, I was fine with it ... I had plenty of time. All in all it was a great visit, great food, awesome and very lovely staff ... 10/10 would go back again.

I had seen on their social media (Snapchat?) that they could make a burrito in 27 seconds. That sounds good in a way but wasn't actually too fast - before I had decided what I wanted (toppings) it was being wrapped! Now the burrito I had was OK - average. Shame they don't have any wholemeal wraps and more than one rice option. Also, there was no sauces they added to the burrito - so almost was a bit dry, in a way. The burrito was OK as I said but tasted all "separate". One bite was all rice, the next was all meat and then another bite was all just salad. The way its wrapped? How ingredients are positioned in the wrap?? I then went shortly after, I think the next day, to try it out again. I got a voucher on the opening day so used this - got a free lemonade. The voucher actually has 2 other options - free tortilla chips and free guacamole. Actually, that leads me on to the guacamole. Normally its £1 extra. I expect guacamole to be included in a burrito! And even if it isn't, £1??! And I thought it didn't taste that good. Chilango do sell other things other than burritos such as nachos, nudos, tacos - which I may try one time. However, I am not as likely to have a burrito again. Although they are OK, Changos is pretty much just across the road and I much prefer their burritos. As well as better tasting, you get option on wholemeal wraps, couple different rices and with the different sauces, it was more "together". And of course if I wanted the best burrito in Manchester, I would go to Panchos which is about 5 ish minutes away. I have reviewed the Panchos in Arndale Centre and just reviewed the one off Oxford Road). One thing to add about Chilango though is the service. Very friendly. Upbeat.

So maybe I am just wrong. But let me explain. The prices were great - all the dishes were £2.50 - £3 (I think this is a Monday - Thursday deal) which frankly is so cheap these days it's almost not worth complaining about the food. However, I really didn't think the food was that great. Calamari and patatas bravas were just ok. The calamari came with something that was supposed to be chilli and garlic mayo but which tasted like thousand island dressing. Good quality plain alioli would have been much better. Patatas bravas were a little soggy, obviously there's a sauce on them but they should retain some crispness rather than being drenched in it, generally. Maybe this is just the house style. Gambas pil pil I thought kind of had a strange taste which I suspect was something to do with the oil. You get five prawns which is a good portion size but overall this dish was disappointing, especially when compared for example with the incredibly good gambas al ajillo at Tapas Brindisa in London Bridge (to be fair, those cost £8.95 - for a small plate!) Finally the tortilla. Tortilla española is one of my favourite dishes in the world. Done well, it is one of the most delicious things you will ever eat, despite its simple ingredients. One time I had a tortilla in a baguette, which was one of the biggest and best meals of my life. Unfortunately I almost immediately afterwards went home to my host family to find out that grandpa had slaughtered a goat from his farm for me, which I then also had to eat. This tortilla, however, was really bad. It was very soggy, it had no flavour, you could barely tell there were potatoes in it, let alone onions. Maybe there weren't onions in it at all, actually, but then don't call it Spanish omelette. It was basically just egg and what looked like spinach. What I can say for it is that there were 3 slices, which was generous. The restaurant appearance and atmosphere is nice and service was pleasant and I was impressed when our server came over to apologise for the food being delayed (we hadn't been waiting inordinately long at that point). But overall I guess we did wait quite a while as we weren't really sharing it was a bit awkward when 2 people got most of their stuff way before the other 1. Not that big a deal though really.

The food, based on Basque pintxos (tapas mounted on little rounds on bread), I have to admit, are welcome modifications to classic dishes. Yes, I take it back.
