I think about that conversation at least a few times every year when I struggle to decide what I want at a Chinese restaurant. "I had General Tso's chicken recently. Same with Hunan Beef and Twice Cooked Pork. I should go with the . . . Special Soup." Sometimes this soup is actually on the menu, which it is at East Meets West. But even if it's not on a menu, it's a popular off menu item that Chinese restaurants will often make if you request. This was my first time ordering takeout or otherwise from East Meets West and that Chinatown Style Noodle Soup with roast pork and wontons was really speaking to me on this snowy day. It's very good comfort food. The highlights were the chicken wontons (it was almost like a chicken sausage) and the noodles. The broth was fairly standard, but satisfying. The roast pork was good, but not in my top tier for this style of soup. In any event, I was happy with this order. I also ordered a 4 piece Crab Rangoon. The filling was very smooth, and had a sweet and good oniony flavor. I prefer a flakier shell, but it was pretty good. I would definitely order the Crab Rangoon again. 3.5 Stars

The boneless spare rib tips are chewy and taste mostly like cartilage, not to mention their small container doesn't even get filled all the way. The mount of meat in the small container is the amount you'd get in a lunch combination plate. Their fried chicken wings have little flavor and aren't equally proportional. 2 of my 4 wings were significantly undersized. They also chop the tips off the larger wings, and I enjoy my tips. That experience and extra meat was taken from me. I typically go to Yang Zi Jiang, and this is exactly why. Rather skip Chinese food altogether next time than to explore other options just because YZJ closes earlier.

Still, Great Wall consistently provides food that is decent to very good, at a fair price. Great Wall's service is very efficient. I live a little less than 10 minutes away. Things usually go like this. I call from from home. Great Wall answers by the second ring. The call lasts a minute and at the end, Great Wall says "10 minutes." I walk to my car and drive. I arrive at Great Wall and my order is ready. That's reliable takeout. I change up my orders a bit, but I frequently order a combo meal with General Tso's chicken, boneless spare ribs, pork fried rice and an egg roll. That's what I ordered tonight. If not for this combo meal, I probably wouldn't order any of these things. But getting these four things together often outweighs the one thing that I most want to order. Pork fried rice's stock was a bit down tonight. It's never a highlight, but today there seemed to be less pork than usual. However, Egg Roll's stock was a bit up. A wash. The boneless spareribs are consistently very good. The pork has good texture and the glaze has the level of sweetness I look for. It's hard to know how to judge the General. The outside is never as crispy as I like, but it is takeout and steam circulates when they close the lid. The sauce has good flavor. The chicken itself is OK. One thing that Great Wall consistently crushes is Crab Rangoon. The shell is crispy and has good color. The inside is sweet and creamy. Great texture and flavor all around. Great Wall is somewhere between 3 and 4 Stars for me. Closer to a 3 tonight. In any event, until another within a 600 second drive can efficiently provide better food for the same price or less, Great Taste will remain my Chinese Takeout Place, 10 Minute Drive or Less Category.

The fried rice wasn't quite flavorful enough. My partner added soy sauce. The dumplings were just OK. It was a very thick dough and a little amount of very congealed meat, that kept falling out of the pocket. It came with a sauce that was basically just a soy sauce. Would Have loved something a bit sweeter and vinegary for a sauce. The crab rangoons were honestly even better than I remembered them being last time. Perfect sweet to Salty ratio, perfect crisp. Still wish they came with a plum sauce instead of the giant tub of bright red sweet and sour sauce. And the wonton soup was pretty good. The soup itself didn't have much flavor, but I actually liked the wontons themselves a lot better than the other dumplings.

I asked for it extra spicy and she repeated it back to me. When I got home to eat, the eggroll was OK, the fried rice was lacking flavor and the entree was disappointing. It was not spicy at all, let alone extra spicy. The small pieces of chicken were overcooked and dry and the vegetables were mostly pieces of celery and an occasional tiny cube of carrot or a slice of tiny baby corn. I will not be back. This used to be better than any of the Chinese places in town, but not any more.
