Best food and service ever!! Love the fried flounder, fried crabs, cabbage soup, fried okra

The food here is always fresh and does not miss. The egg roll was a bit dry though. The environment does feel a bit stale and there's hardly people there when I go but don't let that deter you. Their customer service is great and the food better read more

Food was fair at best! Would not come back again. Although it was just fair, it came out steaming hot which I appreciate .

Every time my husband and I are in Harlingen for his VA appointments, we have lunch here. Great buffet

The food is good enough, there's just no splash of color from various vegetables. I like the buffet, but noticed while trying to find dishes with lots of fresh vegetables that all the entrees just looked brown. I'm guessing using canned or frozen vegetables. It's basic, and with a little more effort could be great. read more

Big servings. Very nice staff. Kind, courteous, and respectful. We usually just order takeout, but the restaurant is small and cozy.

This place has great food and I believe the taste and quality of the food has always been consistent over the years. The service was excellent. The place is older and hasn't seen many improvements over the years but the important thing (to me) is the food is still great. read more

China Star Restaurant - Hot Sour Soup - Chinese Near Me - Harlingen, Texas

I just had one the most disappointing meals in recent memory at China Star in Harlingen. The service was meh and the food was worse. I had eaten a late lunch, so ordered the calamari appetizer and "Gourmet Chinese Vegetables." The calamari were like rubbery donuts dripping with grease; the only dipping sauce available was ranch dressing. They reminded me of the Chinese food we would get in the 1960s. The gourmet vegetables was a stir fry of about 80% broccoli with a few mushrooms, slices of bok choi, slivers of zucchini and a sprkinkling of snow peas. Vegetables? Yes. Gourmet? Nope. I can't say much about the heaping bowl of fried rice other than after 2 bites I knew I wouldn't have a third. When the woman staffing the front counter asked me if everything was ok, I said "No." When she asked why I said the food wasn't very good. She turned away and left. This was my last night in town and it honestly left a bad taste in my mouth, unlike all the other meals I had over my 4-day stay. read more

I stopped in for a takeout dinner. I ordered Kao pao Shrimp with Hot and Sour soup and egg roll. I received chicken, not a fan of chicken. Takeout with no spoon to eat the soup. In Harlingen for business and will make a note not to return to China Star. read more

China Star Restaurant - Kao Pao Chicken, Egg roll, fried rice and hot and sour soup. - Chinese Near Me - Harlingen, Texas

Restaurant was clean, service was quick and our waitress was attentive. I ordered the genral chow chicken and it was very good. My families meals were delicious as well. All in all we had a good meal. Only gave it a 4 star because the glass table was very streaky. read more

Looking for my go to plate: sweet sour chicken. Requested a taste of the hot sour soup and found it too vinegary for me so I settled for egg drop soup. Egg roll was good even after my winning the struggle with the plastic soy sauce packet (note for next time: carry a pair of scissors). I was served a side of sweet red sauce (for dipping?) along with perfect looking fried chicken pieces that were a bit tough. The rice was super tasty! The service was good once we located the waitress in a not too busy place. This is my second visit; I'm an optimist, so more to come. read more

Accidentally ordered here instead of China Restaurant (across from Shipleys) and I'll never make that mistake again. $18 for low mein, fried rice and hot and sour soup?? I would've paid $8 for lunch with MUCH better flavor. Will never come back read more

This is the first time we've eaten here in probably over three years. The food has really been improved a lot since our last visit. A friend said that they had improved a lot so we gave them another try. I ordered delivery today and we were very pleased with everything. Very good flavor and generous potions on all of our order. We are back and definitely plan to return for more! read more

China Star Restaurant - a bowl of soup with noodles - Chinese Near Me - Harlingen, Texas

Good food, great service, nice ambiance, awesome prices. We came for the lunch buffet (available only Monday - Friday 11am - 3 pm). The staff is always friendly and welcoming. They check back on you frequently. I recommend their sweet tea for a beverage. It's got just the right amount of sweetness (at least in MY opinion). I also highly recommend the coconut shrimp. If you would like to sample many of their dishes before committing to the menu size portions then I recommend coming in for their lunch buffet. My husband recommended the sweet and sour pork. read more

The food quality and quantity has been on a down hill path I use to love this place the food batter taste so bad it had no flavor and lost its Chinese touch but I'm sure they are not making the food on there own read more

I'm extremely picky about Chinese restaurants. A really good Omen when we walked up to the front door, was the top performer health award for October 2012. The buffet costs $7.95 per person At lunch and was a really good selection of fresh Vegetables chicken shrimp beef and other assorted dishes. Our waiter was very attentive....plates were cleaned up quickly and the restaurant .....most important of all .....was spotless. The restaurant is decorated beautifully with Gorgeous paintings on the wall and exquisite table tops. There is no doubt we will be going back there again. read more

This is hands down my favorite Chinese restaurant in the area. The service is great, the atmosphere is pleasant and the food is actually cooked and seasoned right. I've had their dinner portions and they are substantial, but I prefer to come for their daily lunch buffet. The buffet isn't huge, but they seem to have items that you don't normally find on other Chinese buffets in the area like chicken-corn soup and egg foo yung. read more

Really good food on the buffet - small portions that are constantly being replenished to provide hot food for everyone. Tasty items on the buffet that most would order as individual dishes. All at a very great value - win / win. read more

I started coming here when I started dating my boyfriend who lives in the Harlingen area. His family has been coming here for 10 years and I can see why: the food is all delicious, the staff is friendly and fast, the decor and music fits the Chinese theme, and the portions are large (leftovers!) I always get the China Star Chicken extra hot (which makes it just barely spicy) with steamed rice and the hot and sour soup. Most importantly, they don't use MSG in the food! The flavor is unique and delicious. It's a bit pricey but it's worth it because of the quality. read more

Get the sizzling rice soup! You won't be disappointed. This is my favorite place to eat when I come to Harlingen. I also love their sesame chicken and their fried rice. I am not usually a fan of fried rice but this one has a lot of flavor without the grease. read more

I like the chicken w fried rice .. it's served in a little box but the portion feeds two people..

Where do i start, the fried wontons are burnt, the pork if you can even call it that will disintegrate when crushing it. Also the chicken from the c1 meal has no flavor what so ever, its plain so you need to eat something with it to taste a little better. Also a lack of customer customization. In all my experience was awful and may not ever come again. read more

China Star Restaurant - Chinese Near Me - Harlingen, Texas

Pretty poor service for a restaurant that had an overflowing parking lot. Ordered Fried Rice with Chinese Veggies .. got A plate of veggies with no rice...hmm? Ordered Beef in Oyster Sauce got Shrimp in some horrific light brown sauce, didn't taste anything like Oyster Sauce. No condiments packed for my egg rolls only got hot mustard. Sad thing is that they repeated my order correctly. Covid is an OPPORTUNITY for restaurants to shine a chance to deliver to New patrons. There's NO excuse for inaccuracies in food orders, especially carry out. Even though the remainder of the order was correct, I will not return to this China Star. I have other options in town and work too hard to put up with incompetence like this. read more

We decided to try something different in Harlingen and opted for Chinese dining. The wait staff was very friendly and the food came out quickly. We ordered Sesame Chicken, Moo Goo Gai Pan, Kung Pao Chicken, and Green Beans with Chicken. The portion were small especially the rice. They definitely skimped on the rice. The egg rolls were ok. The flavor of food was ok, but not great. No kids menu. read more

The staff is so friendly and the ladies in the front are excellent to talk to. Don't expect delivery, only pizza delivers in Harlingen, Texas. I always get a dinner special, it's always more than enough food for left overs. The fried rice is the best, hands down. It can be a little pricey for the area but the price is worth the peace and quiet you get from not having screaming kids running around a buffet as they ruin your evening. read more

China Star is probably the best Chinese restaurant in the Valley. For one, most "Chinese" restaurants in the Valley are buffet only - so that's not a tough obstacle. But at China Star, there is a buffet. However, I venture to say that most of the restaurant's business comes from people actually sitting down and ordering off a menu. The food is fantastic, to say the least. The staff is excellent, and the owners are delightful - and they are always there! The chicken egg foo yung is delicious, as are the vegetarian options. The quality is way up there. My family has been frequenting China Star for years. And it's easy to see why. read more

After trying multiple "Chinese" restaurants, I still find my self coming back to Mrs. Kim and her excellent quality Chinese food. I have had the buffet, which I enjoy because I can get my fill of Hot Sour Soup and Egg Rolls. I have had their Mongolian Beef which I believe is the best tasting dish ever. I have had P.F. Chang's in the past and had their Peppered Beef, but I was not very impressed and had to immediately come and have it from here. They have excellent service, who always greet you with a smile. I have come here since I was literally a newborn, only 3 days old, and have never stopped since. The waitress that was there when I was born still continues to work there to this very day. The promptness of the food's arrival also make it a great choice for me. If you ever want to have great quality Chinese food or Sushi, you must come here and try all they have to offer. read more

The food is good. My family and I have ordered from here many times as well as dined in at the restaurant. We have had our take our order messed up one time in the past. Chief Complaint: PRICE - It cost our family of 4 (2 kids under age 10) over $40 to eat here. Seems odd we can eat at other restaurants for under $40. read more

I don't care what any of the negative comments say China Star is the place to be. The buffet is great for lunch and the total atmosphere in general is warm and welcoming. read more

The buffet is good...I just wish they had a bit more variety. As for the food in general: delicious. They have a specialty dish, China Star chicken...oh man, is it good. I usually get it "medium" since it's a spicy dish. I recommend it. There have been some changes lately. I think the management switched hands or something. The former manager/owner was really sweet. He was a young man who would talk about his wife who would travel to Taiwan (?) often. Now, the manager/owner is a middle-aged woman who doesn't always appear happy. I've even heard her snapping at some of the waitresses--in front of customers. Just not really professional, in my opinion. But there have been other changes. For one, they used to have packaged ice cream for the buffet...haven't seen that. They also used to have fountain drinks...now it's bottled. (Not a huge deal, but the thing is if you're a big drinker you no longer have your refills.) What is especially noteworthy is the new manager's attitude. She is rude. Plain and simple. I mean, she has a nice streak to her, but it doesn't shine through very much. If you're ordering over the phone, 9 times out of 10 she's the one taking it...and she is NOT pleasant. She cuts you off, rushes you, and demands you just wait until you get to the restaurant for some things. One time I was asking about a dish, and she cut me off, spat out the ingredient list, and said I should just go to the restaurant to place the order so I could take a look at the dish for myself--at the buffet. Then she insisted that I should just order a buffet plate to go instead, since there's more of a variety. (Makes sense, but again, rude. Not to mention the buffet cost a lot more than the dish I was asking about. ) Today, I was placing an order to pick up. I asked about the tea, paused for a second on whether I should just order a soda, and then (wait for it...) she impatiently said I could just wait to choose my drink when I got to the restaurant. *period...done...can I hang up now?* Oh, and one more thing. She judges the amount of food to people ratio. She'll mutter things under her breath, like "ohh lot of food..." and "really?" if you only ask for a certain number of forks for your order. No Shame. It's humiliating. So, overall: --food is delicious --customer service needs MAJOR improvement read more

This is my all-time favorite Chinese restaurant. I've been all over and never found a place with as good a won-ton soup as China Star. It's a beef broth rather than a chicken broth, and the won-ton noodles are so fresh they'll slap your face. I've been eating in this restaurant since I was ten years old. I went back again two weeks ago. It's unchanged in it's quality. Still kicking after all these years. I can't recommend them highly enough. read more

This is my favorite Chinese restaurant in Harlingen. I have been coming here for years and have never been disappointed. These days I usually pick up to-go, and love their chicken fried rice. It comes in around $10 but is loaded into the to-go box and is more than filling for one person. They have a lunch buffet that is awesome as well. There isn't a lot of variety, but the quality of the buffet is great and equally as good as their normal dishes. read more

Went out shopping and was in the mood for Chinese food so saw this place on the way. I was greeted by a nice Chinese lady at the counter. Took my order and waited a reasonable time for a takeout. I love lo mein noodles so I ordered them. They are a bit soggy for my taste otherwise good and I also ordered a bar-b-que ribs (4) appetizer and didn't realize it until I got home that the ribs were a meal in itself. They were huge ribs for an appetizer. Very tasty as well. I also ordered 2 egg rolls, not bad. I will definitely be going back. Highly recommended. read more
