My wife and I had dinner there on a quest to locate a decent Chinese/Asian restaurant around Ocala. Unfortunately we're still looking. China Star is a mostly take out restaurant that has a few tables in the lobby so you can eat your order there if you choose to. This is our first time dinning here so our experience may not actually be indicative overall. My pork fried rice was pretty dry and consisted of mostly rice. Also admit to being a Metro NY Chinese food snob. We're not all that close to town (live 10 miles north of the dreaded Villages) but we're in town and based on reviews we ordered lunch to takee home. Ordered two staples to see how they measur up. Bottom line... the food was exceptional very much like we had at our favorite place on Long Island. We'll definitely be back when we're in town. For some who thought the service was rude or not answering what you were askiing about I'm sure this was more a language problem more than an attitude problem. Since I moved to Ocala fl I have been very happy with China Star. But it ended today, I ordered the house special lo mein and there was virtually no meat in it, the steamed dumplings were completely different , they had a whitish meat and tasted awful. Even the crab rangoons looked different. I hope the is just a rare event and will try one more time but if it stays the same I will be looking elsewhere . read more

This place never disappoints us. Everything is fresh & flavorful. It's hard to find Chinese food as good as in Boston & surrounding towns. Remember there is no ambiance. A few tables but most of the orders are takeout. read more

Nothing tastes fresh there. either it's the oil or the pans but something overrides the flavor of the ingredients.

We just had take out from China Star this evening for the first time. It was quite good and pretty reasonable. I had the vegetable chow mei fun and it was some of the best I'd ever had, with the addition of fresh green beans! The broccoli in garlic sauce was delicious and the spring roll was light and crisp and delicious! My daughter loved her shrimp in lobster sauce, my son liked his sweet and sour chicken, but my husband's General Tso's chicken was very thick and too sticky and not so great. The lighter fair seems to be the way to go here. I will definitely be back. read more

Yum Yum Git-A-Sum is what I had. LOL I love it when they always give you something for free, but I always forget and order the Large Wonton Soup and then they throw in a free one when we order two combos. LOL So, remember that next time! They will give you free soup! They are pretty good, and the service is fast. Husband ordered the lunch special and was standing at the counter where he could see into the kitchen. One of the cooks had a cleaning cloth beside him. He dropped something off onto the floor, grabbed the cloth, wiped it up off the floor with the cloth. Then placed the cleaning cloth back up on the counter beside him where He was cooking. Husband told the ladies at the counter what the cook had done that was so disgusting. They acted like they did not understand what was wrong. Husband was so disgusted by what he saw and they allowed he refused the order. read more

Considering there is not many options of Chinese food in the immediate area, I was not expecting much from this unassuming little hole in the wall Chinese restaurant nestled in a partially barren strip mall. But Chinese food is my Achilles heel, so I had to try having had the urge for some General Tso's chicken. Having all the basics in their arsenal for combo meals, I decided to order a General Tso's and a Kung Pao chicken dinner. Wow was I impressed! The portions are huge first of all, but not only that everything was so fresh and delicious! The sauce on the General Tso's chicken was tangy and perfect and the chicken was crispy. The veggies were plentiful and the peanuts crunchy in the Kung Pao, it was excellent! Meals came with Wonton soup which was good, but not great and an egg roll which was better than most. Overall, I would put this place up against most Chinese restaurants. in the greater Miami area and expect them to come out on top. Color me impressed Ocala. You have a local gem! read more

With apologies, my original review was for someplace else, I discovered this during a talk with a friend about places to eat and I am correcting the review since I tried this place. I ordered: 1. Pupu Platter - 2 spring rolls, greasy and average to below average. Fried shrimp, the typical, awful, prepackaged fried shrimp that predominates in Ocala, chicken wings, breaded and awful. Teriyaki beef aka beef on a stick, tender and about average for flavor. Crab rangoon, typical. 2. Chicken rice soup - A container of rice with nearly flavorless broth poured over it, topped by chicken and green onions. Ridiculous, it's rice with watery flavor added. 3. Hot and sour soup - Hot, not in any realm of reality. Sour, lol, it was sweet. To top it off there was some awful bitter crap flavoring it. Sad, poured down the drain. 4. Beef fried rice - If not for the weird orange coloring they use, it would be okay. Peas, carrots, onions added to the rice with beef. Will try to salvage. 5. Egg rolls - Sucky commercial ones with mushy filling. Thrown out. 6. Sweet and sour shrimp - I was so psyched that they had the battered shrimp that I am used to, until I bit into one and it was shrimp that was old enough to be shriveled and tough. Trash. 7 Pork egg foo young - Overcooked, the char was clear in the taste, the vegetables as usual for the Chinese restaurants in Ocala so far, mushy and overcooked. 8. Steamed dumplings - Doughy, but decent flavor. The dipping sauce was typical of the mirin soy sauce I have had before, but they didn't bother with adding the ginger that makes it really flavorful and compliment the dumplings. Plan to return, not likely $57 down the toilet. This is another sad Chinese restaurant in Ocala. read more

New to the area and tried this restaurant tonight based on the good reviews. I called in and I gave them the numbers off the menu that corresponded with the entrees we wanted so there would be no confusion. Apparently that didn't work because when we went to pick it up they gave us garlic shrimp instead of garlic chicken. The lady argued with us that that's what we ordered. Considering everyone in our household despises seafood of any kind I can guarantee you we didn't order the shrimp. She actually became quite rude and angry when we wouldn't take the shrimp. She reluctantly made us the garlic chicken and we left. For a dish that's suppose to be spicy it had absolutely no flavor whatsoever. The fried rice was just plain yellow rice. No onions, peas, eggs nothing and had no flavor. The honey chicken and sweet and sour chicken had decent flavor. The egg drop and wonton soups lacked any flavor. I always give a place a second chance so maybe next time we will have better luck. read more

Fairly new to the west Ocala area and have tried a few of the chinese restaurants including the "favorite" one. This is by far the best and I grew up in the metro NY area and have lived in S. Fla for many years. This food holds up with those places with good food, service and portions. If you live out 200, this is the place to go. read more

Last night we had an awful experience at this establishment. We chose China Star due to Yelp reviews. I called on the way to get their closing time. It was 9:30. We arrived at 8:30. They were already cleaned and looked as if they were going to close. Since we wanted to eat in, they had to put the chairs back down at a table for us. They had already dumped out the tea and would not make any more. We ordered soup and a dinner. There were 4 of us. They delivered the dinners and said the soup would be out shortly. When it finally came, the eggs were not done in the Egg Drop Soup. My pork egg foo young was good but not spectacular. Our friends ordered General Tso's Chicken and did not like it. It is supposed to be spicy and had no spice at all. They also said they are used to more sauce. At least 10 more people came in for take out. When 9:30 rolled around, they wanted to leave.
