Me and my family have been dining at China Star for a while now. The food has always been pretty tasty. I have heard lots of rumors about the food poisoning from the food here and I never believed them until the other day my daughter got food poisoning from the lo mein. The outside is not very attractive but the inside is a little more appealing to customers. The service here is very quick and I appreciate that! Avoid or you too may ask, "What is this glutinous mass in my food?" See photos... OK...it was lunchtime, there were other orders... I can understand the 30-minute wait. I don't *like* it, but I can understand it. What I DON'T understand is how China Star could serve such a glob of goo. I ordered Chicken Chow Mein -- the most basic, innocent dish on the menu. A complete non-adventure, right? Wrong. China Star achieved something I've never seen anywhere... I'm 63. Eaten thousands of meals. Eaten meals in 69 counties. But I've never been assaulted by a meal, until I tried China Star in Manassas. Opening the box, I grabbed my chopsticks and started into it ... And was initially subdued by the lack of taste. The celery was fine, but everything else was 'meh.' As if it had first passed through a flavor removal process before cooking. Striking in it's tastelessness. But as I went a couple bites deeper I struck something that moved the whole container. It's in the picture below. It's a mass of glued-together, stuck-together paste-and-veggies. What kind of paste? Unknown. And, although it's called Chicken Chow Mein, there was little chicken. It wasn't even Chicken-flavored Chow Mein, see comment on taste above. Overall, pathetic. Got take out to take home this evening. First time trying out this fairly new Chinese joint. Ordered spring rolls, hot and sour soup, Kung Pao Chicken (extra spicy) and Shrimp Fried Rice. Food was ready when I arrived - paid for it and continued on home. The Food: - Spring rolls were excellent! Crisp, not greasy at all. - Hot and Sour soup had a strange bit of sweetness to it that I am not accustomed to. - The Kung Pao Chicken would not be liked by Jesse C. It is more than chicken and peanuts. They add carrots, celery, and green bell pepper. Spiciness and flavor of the sauce were good. - Shrimp Fried Rice was very good. Very tasty! China Star get's one more from me after my 'dine in' experience. I stopped in after along bike ride in the neighborhood. They have a great location at the corner of Wellington and Grant for an easy in and out. I ordered the Moo Shu pork which was quite good! It comes with steamed rice, plum sauce and those thin rice shells for wrapping like a chinese taco. Service was fast and friendly. I forgot my bike lock so the owner let me wheel my bike inside. Don't ask...I've had two bad experiences with my bike getting ripped off. I refuse to get a cheap bike. Any way, I had ordered take out here back in Oct which was a less than 3 star experience. Yucky. I accidentally placed an order here instead of the fantastic China Palace. I thought how bad could it be. Well, awful sums it up. Wontons in wonton soup were yellow. Soup was greasy. Egg rolls were super greasy and has napkin in bottom of wax paper bag which was wet with grease. Beef with Broccoli was gray. General tsaos chicken probably never saw a chicken and was also greasy. Rarely does good Chinese food have leftovers. Lots of leftovers. Also, I was only pick up order (no surprise). I walked in and the cashier immediately goes to look at receipts. I was the only customer and I waited 5 minutes while my bag of disgusting food sat on the counter. I just hope we all don't get food poisoning. read more

I had to try several different Chinese restaurants in the area before I found this one. Now this is the only one we order from. Whenever I get hungry for Chinese food, this is our go-to place! They deliver for a minimal fee, the servings are always large, prices are always right and food is delicious! I've never eaten inside the restaurant; we've always had delivery, but never any complaints. I'm surprised at how many great Chinese food places there are around town. This one included. It has great dishes (General Tso's, House and Chicken fried rice, Shrimp and Scallops) comparable to the rest of my reviews in Chinese delivery places. Their service is fast and very pleasant people. I don't recommend the Crab Ragoon, it's a bit salty. I'm lookin forward to exploring the rest of the menu here. I've already ordered from this place 3x in the last 2 weeks, it's that good. I ate here again, and I was not impressed now. The wonton soup is good. That alone is why it doesn't get the one star. But this time I ordered a Lo Mein dish. The noodles and everything else in it were greasy. Tons of rice (they got the order wrong with it as I requested white rice and they gave me fried) to the point where it made the dish inedible. On top of that, the noodles and the vegetables in it tasted out of a supermarket. How I managed to not get sick from it, also gets me 2/5. I also asked for a menu, and they did not give it to me. The wife and I have been looking for a new go to Chinese spot since moving to this end of town, and we have finally found it right in our backyard. Being a bit cautious about going there since they are right next to the sketchy part of town, and having taking a long break from Chinese food due to diets, I hadn't tried them in the two years I've lived over here. But the wife and I have both been struck with colds recently and Chinese food is our comfort food when sick, so we've had takeout here several times in the last few weeks with very positive results. My favorite thing, hands down, are the Steak and Cheese Egg rolls. The standard fried apps here are all very good, with ample portions for the right price. Wife and I both have had the Lo Mein and have been happy, I love the Crispy Beef special dinner and wife approves of the Shrimp with Mixed Vegetable. And they offer very good specials with a free item for $X purchase, with multiple options in each category. Using that, we got an order of Roast Pork Lo Mein, Shrimp with Mixed Veg, 2 S&C rolls, 2 beef spring rolls, an order of beef terayaki (6), an order of crab rangoon (12) for $27. Fantastic value, and everything was very good. Service has been mostly OK - one out of the three times I had a bit of a longer wait than advertised, but generally no issues and everyone here is friendly. I am a Wu's Garden girl. They are my go to for Chinese delivery when I am at home. I thought I would branch out a bit and try something new - I called China Star and placed my typical order, General Tso's Chicken and an order of Crab Rangoon and threw in a diet coke for good measure. I could easily understand the woman on the phone. She told me it would be about 45 minutes and they delivered right within that time frame. IMO, Wu's Garden has the best crab Rangoon in Manassas, maybe anywhere, and this opinion still stands true today! China Star's order comes with 12 small purse style Rangoon's. They were basically still raw dough with cream cheese in them. They needed to be cooked a few minutes longer. The soggy dough and the super soft cheese filling was basically a bite of mush. No bueno! More crab...more onion... more flavor! Please!! The Generals Tso's Chicken wasn't bad but it also wasn't really good. It was a tad bit over breaded, soggy, included no broccoli and didn't have any spice to it whatsoever. Strike two! The rice - was white rice with soy sauce. No peas, no carrots, no onions and certainly no flavor. Strike three... boo! It's not that things here are terrible, but there are better options around. I don't see myself ordering here again. Since moving to the Wellington/Manassas area about a year ago I've been going to Panda Cafe. Tonight I thought I'd give China Star a try. Their dumplings are very good, their dipping sauce isn't my personal favorite though. I also got chicken with mixed vegetables. They give you the option of brown or white sauce, I got brown. The ratio of meat to vegetable was very tasty, everything seemed fresh and good. Wish it was a little saltier. I got a free order of sweet and sour chicken with my order over $25, it was also very traditional and very good. Their steak and cheese egg rolls are smaller than Panda Cafe but they are also cheaper (2 for $2.95 at China Star, $2.45 each at Panda). I feel they are just as good. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars was the customer service isn't so great but it wasn't horrible. All in all, they are a little cheaper than Panda Cafe and portions are still great. A few small differences but not bad. read more

This is my 1st experience with them. The food is good/great and delivery service fast! I ordered the Orange Chicken lunch special, great! The egg roll that came with it is a bigger egg roll and delicious. I'm picky with Crab Rangoon's and I'm still trying to find the perfect one. There's are good, with more meat and just enough crunch, but a touch salty. I also tried their steak & cheese egg roll. It was okay but I know people rave about then, so it's worth trying to decide for yourself. I already had a "go to" Chinese Restaurant, but I tried China Star since all the reviews on Yelp were so positive. POSITIVES: The ordering process was very easy, she even explained the dishes I could get for free after I asked. They did provide a calendar for the next year as well. The order showed up quickly and was hot and was a great price. The sesame chicken and white rice were good. NEGATIVES: However I was not pleased with the quality of the rest of the food. They put way too many onions in their Fried Rice, the Lo Mein noodles were a little soft for my taste and not much flavor. The Wonton Soup tasted a little onion-y to me as well (but that's just a personal preference). I don't think I will order from here again. I will be going back to Twin Lakes II. I do understand we are all different and have different tastes and preferences. I am not trying to sway anyone, simply giving my opinion in hope it helps. read more
