My favorite place to eat in Winchester! I always just get carry-out, so I can't really speak to their service, but their carry-out is quick and easy. Their prices are good for cheap Chinese. They have the usual Chinese dishes, but some of my favorites are the lo mein, chicken & broccoli, and general tso's chicken. Their crab rangoon is good too. Some of the negatives are that their fortune cookies are always stale and the egg rolls don't have much flavor--I prefer their spring rolls. Didn't get to try the food as I walked in and it was carry out one small area to order. Couldn't see kitchen area Needless to say I was not impressed and could not recommend it for myself or others. I had high expectations that were not could not be met or even attempted as there were no therefore I couldn't try the food guessing they rely on call ins and deliveries. We use to love eating here everytime we come to town. The owners were nice and kids were polite. The new owners have ran this business into the ground...they are beyond rude especially the kids...the last time we ate here a month ago they were yelling and screaming at each other in Chinese but we couldn't enjoy our food...today I was not even greeted when I walked in like use to owner was busy eating behind counter while I stood there waiting to order I had to wait for her to finish first... Good is good but customer service is the worse I would give it 0 stars for customer service!! All 5 tables had dirty dishes on them and no one was eating in they were not busy so not sure why tables were not cleaned.....sad this once amazing place has went so far down hill read more

With Winchester being my hometown, I know quite a lot about the restaurants it offers. The China House has a wonderful selection of delicious Chinese food. The best part of your experience will be the undoubtedly good service you'll receive. I know the family that works there and they are truly wonderful people. If your order happens to be wrong, they'll have no qualms in fixing it for you on the spot. This is a small town. Small. If you stop by The China House, you'll notice it is also a meet-up spot for a lot of people. The vibe you'll receive is very friendly and inviting. This place is pretty much about what you would expect for a Chinese restaurant in a rural town like Winchester. Out in the middle of nowhere, exotic food options are typically limited to less-than-authetntic Mexican and Chinese. Winchester is no exception. The China House is pretty nice inside. It has a nice location on the square that's clean and pretty spacious. Walking in, it seems like just about every other carry out Chinese place in rural Indiana...not a buffet. Thank God it wasn't a crappy Chinese buffet. They have the stereotypical Chinese menus with the exact same pictures up on the wall that are used everywhere. I didn't expect much, in other words. We came because my grandma lives in Saratoga and the China House is one of her favorite places (since she has little else around) and she loves Amy and her family. I wasn't expecting authentic, and it wasn't really what I got...it's Americanized Chinese...but it's not bad. I actually kind of liked the place. It's worlds better than some similar places I've been. I had pork lo mein...nothing to cry home about, but the noodles and sauce were pretty good. Meat was dry though. It came with rice...a weird side, since it's a noodle dish, but...whatever floats their boat. I really wanted to try and find something a little more authentic or exciting on the menu than lo mein, but I didn't want to take forever and I just kinda assumed there wouldn't be anything. We had dumplings as an appetizer...they weren't too special. The sauce was alright though...it was thicker than dumpling sauces usually are, so it actually stuck to the dumpling instead of running off everywhere. My dad had orange pork. It was pretty good..it had actual orange slices in it. The meat had too much batter though. All in all, if I lived in Winchester, I would be elated to have this. But I live in Hamilton County, with authentic Vietnamese, Thai, Japanese, etc at my fingertips, so this wasn't too thrilling. I'd eat here again, though. It was much better than any "Chinese" buffet I've been to, and better than a lot of similar carry out places. This place really probably deserves 3 stars, but + 1 star for the limited selection. I spent a few weeks out of the year in town for a client and China House would be one of our go-to spots. Yes, it's more like fast-food Chinese food, but it was still good and quick. I'd always get the Lo Mein and Egg Drop Soup. They have a massive menu here though! read more

Sorry 1 out of 10 and this was only because of the cleanliness of the eating area, as I could not attest to the kitchen. You'd be better of microwaving a pack of Ramen noodles and adding some Walmart sauce. This is by no means an actual Chinese restaurant. All I have ever heard about this place has been their less expensive pricing which is usually a bad thing, it's like someone giving a great review of a Mexican restaurant by saying they have great margaritas. It has actually gotten worse from the original owners and they were pretty bad. But I try to give a new business a chance. This was a mistake. read more

I stumble upon this small Chinese restaurant and thought I might check it out since I recently moved in winchester. I visited and found its menu reasonable to pay for. Its staff was nice and there was a lot of customers. I bought the general tso's chicken which was very affordable and delicious. I recommend this restaurant not only because of its location but it is the only Chinese restaurant in town. I'll be visiting here again soon! read more

Wife just told me she saw the ADULT worker take a sweet and sour container freshly bused from another diners table, dump THEIR USED sauce in the trash and REFILL THE CONTAINER FOR A CARRY OUT ORDER!!! Wish she would have told me, I would have alerted the customer! Original TWO star review below... We visited China House a month ago and had a wonderful experience. We thought we had found a gem in Winchester. Food was delicious and hot. We recommended China House to some friends from Muncie and recently joined them on a Saturday evening to give it another go. Something has changed, and not for the better. Carry out was brisk, so the place had steady business. We ordered the General Tso's combo and substituted Wonton Egg Drop soup instead of the egg roll that comes with the combo. Our friends ordered Seven Stars Around the Moon. So here is the critique. Tonight the place was being run by arguing children who mixed up orders. Nothing against kids. They were cute as apple pie. But their arguing and confusion was over the top. Then the food. Crab Rangoon was nice. General Tso's was good and it was hot. However, the two pieces of broccoli that garnished the plate was cold. Not just cold ... REFRIGERATOR cold! Wonton Egg Drop soup - egg drop was nice, wontons not so much. Tasted old. Moon and Seven Stars, a dish of crab meat, chicken, roast pork, scallops, and vegetables served with seven fanned tailed shrimp. Crab meat was non existent. Scallops were very small (I know not expect sea scallops, but come on!) shrimp were overly breaded. We're talking a lot of breading here! Hot and Sour was lukewarm. The China House is Winchester is ok for an occasional Chinese fix. The Spare Ribs are ok, the Beef Pepper Steak with Onion is good. I wish they would revisit some of their fried food selections and maybe clean those up. I went there about two weeks ago, (after being a very frequent customer since I was like 5) and I was so disappointed. There was new owners I'm guessing and I wish the old owners were back. When I had arrived, little kids approached me. I told them what I had wanted and waited for almost a half hour. People came in after me had got their food before me. Two ladies came in and one had watched her friend eat her food after getting hers 10 mins later. I got my food to go and usually attempt to set it on my lap, but it is usually too hot. This time it wasn't. They had changed the to-go containers and they are a lot smaller. My food was definitely made last and was warm. My boyfriends food was really cold and had been made first. Our egg rolls didn't even feel like they were warm. Very disappointed. read more

This used to be a great place with great food but now the food and service suck. When the Huang's had it you could count on the food and service being great. I went in there tonight and the kids were arguing and then the mother came out of the back and started yelling at one of the boys. She yelled at him in front of a restaurant full of people. She got louder and louder. The little girl was not understanding what customers were asking for and therefore the orders were getting all messed up.
