Surprisingly awesome Chinese food near Yellowstone! Visiting Yellowstone for 5 days and staying just outside the West Gate, in a tiny town so small it boasts exactly one traffic light -- so you know you're in for an adventure. We weren't expecting to find good Chinese food in bear-and-bison country, but stumbled upon this gem of a restaurant, and wow -- plot twist! We ordered the ELK sizzling platter, because... when in Yellowstone, eat like an elk? Surprisingly tender, smoky, and flavorful -- definitely a local specialty worth trying. The Sichuan popcorn chicken? Legit spicy, crispy, and could easily sneak into a Sichuan restaurant in Flushing without raising suspicion. The stir-fried large intestine was well-prepped (read: clean!) and delicious -- if you know, you know. Even the shrimp lo mein was decent, although it played it a bit safe, like that one cousin who always orders sweet and sour chicken at dim sum. Would I call it New York or San Francisco Chinatown-level? Nah. But for the middle of Yellowstone? Solid 90/100 -- and that's including bonus points for sheer surprise and elk swagger. read more

The food is very authentic! I didn't expect to have such good Chinese food at Yellowstone! As someone from China, I was impressed by the Sichuan cuisine they offered. The location is not at the center of the west Yellowstone, but parking is easy here compared to parking at the other restaurants in the center. The place is very spacious. It's good for big groups! I live in West Yellowstone for 6 months each year and am always looking for good food. Sadly, this place will not be one of those places I visit - to force a mandatory tip on all orders is ridiculous and downright unethical in my opinion. Pay your employees a fair wage and raise your prices if that is the reasoning behind a 20% flat tax that goes to the owners. If their food is that good, the 20% add fee to the cost of the food items should not be an issue. And, if the service is even borderline mediocre, most folks would tip on the mere fact it's a gateway town and most employees are not locals. Since moving to western Montana a few years ago, I've tried and failed to find authentic Chinese food. Even Spokane, WA, which isn't in the state but is the next closest larger city, has just an okay Sichuan restaurant. This place though - in West Yellowstone of all places - is the real deal. They have clearly gone to the trouble to import a professionally trained head chef from China, the equivalent of a French restaurant employing someone who actually attended culinary school. As for the dishes pictured: The dry fried string beans were as good as I've had anywhere, California and Chengdu included. The tofu bean curd stir fried with shredded pork included Western celery which isn't my personal preference, but aromatics tend to vary with this dish anyway. The water boiled fish, one of my favorite dishes, was an interesting take -- lots of minced garlic, not super spicy, although the overall flavor profile and velvety protein texture was correct. Next time I will ask for it extra spicy. P.S. They also have a sister restaurant of the same name in Jackson, WY, which I believe is open year round. The West Yellowstone location is summer only with a soft opening in May. Minor downsides: no Chinese fresh greens available, and yes, it's pricey for the "real" Chinese dishes on the menu. Expect to pay 2x for Chengdu fried chicken vs General Tso's chicken. But if you live in an ethnic food desert with big city taste buds, or just really like eating Chinese food on vacation like my parents, it's worth it. read more

In person experience, there's a lot of fluctuation with quality because the remote location is hard! And a lot of people who work here are seasonal. So when it comes to food, don't have the most promising stuff... But I have to say China has the best Chinese food in town. Delicious! Better than expected! This place beats some of the Chinese restaurants I've been to in the Washington DC area. This place serves authentic Chinese food! I would say the chef/cook here is REALLY good at putting the flavors together. Make sure to order the authentic entrees and do family-style ordering if you can. The authentic dishes are flavorful and super delicious! I definitely see this place as a popular place Chinese people would go to. The restaurant does not look too fancy ... a little hole in the wall but clean and spacious. The prices are better than the restaurants around it. The service was good (standard Asian restaurant service :)), the staff stopped by to refill drinks and such. Was looking for Chinese food near Yellowstone and decided to give this place a try. There was plenty of seating. Staff felt nice. Good if you have large parties. Other than that, the food is ok. We did notice the food was a bit salty for us. Some dishes we ok, but some dishes felt like I needed to eat a lot of rice to balance the salt. If you're looking for Chinese food in the West Yellowstone area, this place is a major disappointment. The food quality is below average and just as expensive as any other restaurant here. If you're looking for authentic food, go back home. I'd eat Panda Express over this. The interior of the building was not really what we were expecting. It's very spacious and a bit dingy, but that's not really an issue. I went to Yellowstone with my family, and we are all Chinese. The servers told us in Mandarin to quickly eat our food because people from returning from tours would be coming soon. It felt like they were rushing us. The other interactions with them were similarly cold. Also, The kettle on our table wasn't full of tea, but water. It just seemed like cutting corners. We ordered the clay pot chicken, mapo tofu, and beef broth stew with radish. All the food was lacking in size. The beef broth seemed especially thin, like it was more water than flavor. The mapo tofu sauce seemed to be a similar quality to store bought sauce. Nice little place kind of off the main roads. Not many patrons so I thought hmmm... but it was awesome ! Ordered Kug Pao, Lo mein, broccoli beef and rice . Everything was fresh and tasty. Arrived at the restaurant tonight (Thursday evening) around 9:20 PM and asked if we could still dine since they closed at 10 PM. We were told we could order take out. We accepted and ordered egg drop soup and a pork egg roll to go and paid. The waiter returned and said they no longer served soup and the person in our party who ordered soup was in the restroom. We told the waiter we would need to ask her when she comes out. He said to hurry and went to talk to the host in Mandarin Chinese. He was cursing and talking BS about us which was highly inappropriate. He didn't know we could understand. We asked for a refund and left. Shady practices ! They to trick customers into leaving 2 tips! They have a mandatory tip listed as a line item on your receipt, then when you go to pay the only total listed is total including the mandatory tip plus a box to leave a tip. This tip isn't labeled as an additional tip or anything. If you write a tip in on the receipt it will be an extra tip because they already charged a mandatory tip on the receipt. Shame on them for trying to trick tourists! Food was food though, yes, a bit salty like some other reviewers said, but had good flavor. Prices are high and they charge for rice too. Service was virtually non existent, the waiter only came to the table twice, once to take the order and once to give us the bill. You would think with a deceptive mandatory tip you might get at least a little service. Guess not. read more

Compared to other Chinese restaurants in the area that have a greater number of reviews, China Fun Restaurant is better in terms of cheaper price and flavorful food. I travelled with my mom and Chinese aunties who have strong preference for Chinese food for almost every meal, and they all agreed this place fit their palette a lot better than the other nearby Chinese restaurants. The service was also much more friendlier as our waiter was very accommodating to my aunts' requests (filling their tumblers with hot water, making the food less spicy, and providing the ginger scallion soy sauce for one of our dishes). We went around 8pm on a Tuesday so there wasn't many other customers around, so the wait time for the food was pretty quick. The interior itself isn't much to look at but that's not something we put great importance in. Also, speaking for myself, since I'm aware parties of 6 or more have the gratuity included in the final bill, I did not have any issues with the bill/tipping. I first became concerned when I saw how absolutely filthy the tabletop soy sauce and salt Shaker were. It looked like they haven't been cleaned for years. My wife found the tofu dish so distasteful, she left all but the bite she took. My husband and I are only here for a week and I had a craving for Chinese (he got pizza elsewhere- which was actually good) I got sautéed three delight and because their entrees don't come with rice, I also ordered shrimp fried rice. This place does not deserve the stars it has. I'm pretty sure it's because they are in a tourist town and the visitors may not have tasted decent chinese food. All the dishes aside from the dumplings were a struggle to consume and far from authentic. Also add on top of that the owner had an extremely cold and indifferent attitude. At one point he lost patience when taking our order (we were reconsidered one of the items) and had a younger worker serve us instead as he went to another table.
