Now that's some good eating right there, I tell ya. Simple southern cooking like mamas, grandmas,…read moreaunts and all kinds of kinfolk and friends put on the table and we dig into with gusto. Fried chicken was that simple salt/pepper, flour and fry chicken. Nice crust and tasty moist meat. Macaroni and cheese was about as close to the way my mother used to make it and I enjoyed every bite. A little creaminess with chunks of melted cheddar mixed in. My only complaint would be that the cheese on top was not browned enough for my personal taste. The black eyed peas had onion in them so my wife had to work around the onion but I enjoyed that onion flavor. The peach cobbler was the good stuff and my wife even had some and really enjoyed it. That qualifies as high praise from the picky eater. Now we have to talk about their thin delicate "cornbread". It's so thin it will break into pieces when you pick it up. I suspect this was developed by someone who's favorite part of cornbread is the crusty edges. For those who agree, this paper thin delicacy will be addictive. I know I had plenty and had to resist going back for more. The outside and inside are pretty simple. It is a buffet with multiple meat, vegetable and dessert choices. The service was good. The owners were very friendly and accommodating. The price is good for the delicious food. We will be stopping here pretty regularly now for lunch when we are running up and down US 19. So glad we found them.

Through my college years it was a go to for me, they had an AYCE breakfast bar and I was a broke college kid. I always liked this chain. For those not familiar, it is like a Big Boy or a Denny s. There were some reversals for Shoney's over the years. Now they are few and far between. This one has had a remodel but still feels like 1993, I adore this. Lots of old folks in here for lunch, a good indicator for value. The place smells great and the staff seated me right away. The booths are still comfortable. I ordered an All American burger all the way with cheese and bacon plus fries. Everyone was friendly. You can smell the burgers on the grill, it smalls so good in here. My burger was a towering achievement with a side of fries. It was served on a grilled bun with butter. The patties were huge and there was plenty of cheese and bacon. It was dang near perfect. All it needed was an American Flag toothpick on top. The fries were thick cut and the perfect vehicle for Ketchup. There was so much flavor and it was all good. Final wrap-up is the famous strawberry pie. Disappointment reigned supreme they were out! Oh well, a strawberry sundae will do. The whole experience took me back so I am biased. This was a good experience, try it again for the first time.

Best Fried Chicken in Panama City or Panama City Beach -- truly!…read more This is THE fried chicken: perfectly seasoned, thickly breaded, explosively crisp! Absolute YUM. But then... the sides... Who serves fried chicken and doesn't offer chicken gravy for the mashed potatoes? I asked, and the reply was: "We have brown and white." Brown and White??? That's a fried‑chicken sin. And the sin deepened when the "mashed potatoes" turned out to be so watery they could practically be served in a cup. I mentioned it to the waitress, who explained, "We use a mix of instant and real potatoes." OH‑kaaay. My response: "Way too much water." Meanwhile, I'm wondering where the butter and cream went. For reference: I took a skinny straw and actually sucked the potatoes through it. That's how thin they were. The vegetables, however, were genuinely delicious -- classic Southern style and well prepared. A surprise hit: the fried hoecakes. Imagine Jiffy sweet corn muffin mix dropped by the scoop full into the fryer. Oddly enough, they were even better dipped into the "brown" gravy (which tasted suspiciously like modified yeast extract). Look, I understand stretching product and using convenience items. But if you're going to cut corners, do it on pre‑slicing the desserts -- not on the core of a Southern plate. My suggestion to the owners: Lean into what you do exceptionally well -- that phenomenal fried chicken. Sell it by the bucket! I'll come buy it! Trim the sprawling buffet, reinvest in real mashed potatoes with butter and cream, make real gravies, and offer a rotating blue‑plate menu. Do fewer things excellently instead of trying to be an "everything" restaurant and missing the mark on the basics. The chicken is worth the trip. The sides could be, too, with a little love.
