    Egg roll
    Rebecca M.

China 1 is where I decided to eat in Whitsett. There were a few dining options in the shopping center but this seemed to be where everyone was going so I decided Chinese was my best option. I looked at the menu in the window and decided what I wanted. Then when I went to order I was asked what size. I asked about the difference and was shown the container sizes on the wall. It was suggested I do a small combo and get half shrimp and broccoli and half rice as it came with an egg roll. I had almost ordered the large but I couldn't finish what I ordered. I do wish I ordered another egg roll. I enjoyed my food very much. The prices are very reasonable. Service is really friendly here and orders are prepared quickly. I did have to ask for a fork but they likely didn't know I was traveling and not a local. My order was prepared to go but they do have tables to eat inside. I'd eat here again.

This is the Mongolian Beef. More like onions and scallions with tiny pieces of tough gristle! It was nasty!!

HORRIBLE!! Stay away!! What a ripoff!! E we ordered Mongolian Beef and Szechuan Chicken. It was nothing but vegetables! But even an ounce of meat in each one!!! I called to complain but was told no refunds, and the owner just kept talking in circles! $30 for crap!! Disputing the charges with the credit card company and spreading the word about what a pathetic POS ripoff this place is!! Here are pictures of the pathetic food! And it was tasteless and overcooked and dry!! Stay away!!!

It's okay. The staff is friendly. The food needed more flavor for me. Ordered pickup online.

    Shrimp Egg Roll

In a number of ways this is another typical Americanized Chinese restaurant - it is small, has little or no ambiance, is located in a strip shopping center, and serves rather large portions at very reasonable prices. But there are some differences, as well - they offer a small, all-you-can-eat buffet at lunch (10 or 12 items) for $6.95, and they serve up better than average items from their regular menu, at least they do in my opinion. The Chicken Wings with Pork Fried Rice was a nice dish, the wings were nicely cooked, and full of flavor, and the fried rice was solid with a nice amount of pork, corn, & green peas. The Shrimp Egg Roll was very tasty, but a bit on the greasy side. The Mongolian Beef was very nice, and would be a perfect version for me if the touch of sweetness in the sauce were eliminated. It has a nice amount of thinly sliced, tender beef, and is loaded with coarsely chopped green onion, both the white and green parts. The Black Pepper Chicken was quite different from other versions I've tried (I really like this dish when done right, at least right for my tastes) in that it had sliced green pepper and zucchini, as well as the usual sliced white onion.Like the Mongolian Beef, there was a definite sweetness to the dish, and very little heat - still not a bad dish, at all. Called in the order, was ready when I walked in the door. I'll try some more items here, and will almost surely give the small buffet a shot. If I could I'd give them another 1/2 star.

    Crab Rangoon

I was definitely surprised to find out that they were open on Christmas and even though they were busy I still got my food within 10 min. The crab rangoon i ordered were really crispy on the outside and perfect on the inside. The only problem i had with them was the taste of the filling because it was more of a sour and yet sweet taste. The chicken wings were tender and juicy on the inside and extra crispy on the outside. The chicken had a great flavor and seasoned perfectly. The lo mein noodles were cooked perfectly and and had lots of flavor as well my daughter didnt even need duck sauce or soy sauce on them. I will definitely go back to order more food and try other dishes.

The food is always really good -- though to be fair, I usually stick to the same few things: orange chicken, dumplings, beef and broccoli, and their rice. For Mother's Day weekend, I was craving Chinese again and decided to branch out and try the 'house special chow mein.' Because they offer both chow mein and lo mein on the menu, I did a quick search (ChatGPT and Google) to make sure I understood the difference. Everything I read said they're basically the same kind of egg noodles, just cooked differently -- lo mein is soft and saucy, chow mein is tossed in sauce and lightly fried for a crispier texture. Even on Happy Garden's own website, it says under Chow Mein that the dish comes with rice and egg noodles. And "house special" usually means a mix of meats and veggies, which sounded perfect. When I got the order home, I opened it and realized the chow mein was literally just cabbage and other veggies, with shrimp, chicken, and what looked like duck. No noodles. Now, I could've let that slide -- I get that every restaurant does things a little differently. But this was the first time I've ever gotten chow mein with zero noodles. So I decided to call and explain what I expected and what I got. The woman who answered was hard to understand, and after I explained the issue, she took my name and number. When she repeated it back, it didn't sound right, so I repeated it -- and she snapped, "umm yeah, that's what I said!" I apologized and said it just didn't sound right, I was just clarifying. She said the manager would need to call me back and review the order. About 5 minutes later, the manager calls. I start explaining what happened, and she keeps interrupting. So I pause and let her finish -- she goes on about how they make their chow mein. I say, "I get that, I'm just saying mine didn't come with noodles, and I expected noodles based on what chow mein usually is and what your webs--" She cuts me off with "What website!? What website!? Where did you order!?" I tell her, "Ma'am, I ordered from YOUR website, happygardengibsonville.com or whatever. It says under the chow mein category that it comes with rice and rice noodles. So that confirmed, in my mind, I'd be getting noodles." Now, if she had just calmly let me finish and then explained that their chow mein doesn't come with noodles -- just those little fried noodle chips in a bag -- I would've said, "ah, bummer. Can I place an order for lo mein?" That would've been fine. But the tone, the attitude, the defensiveness, the unwillingness to even hear what I ordered and why I expected what I did -- that's what killed it for me. So unfortunately, even though they're right down the street and I've always been happy to support local, I won't be going back. They don't deserve my business.

My one and only time stopping in was at lunch on a weekday, so it wasn't that busy, at all. There were some gentlemen there from the nearby construction crews that were waiting for their order, so I stepped up to the register, grabbed a menu and started looking for what it was I craved. Pretty immediately, a woman came out and stood there like the Soup Nazi (everyone remember Seinfeld?). I felt very rushed and so went with the first thing that came to me head for Chinese food, Orange chicken, steamed white rice...oh, and throw in some egg rolls! She asked me to point it out on the menu, to which I did. Now, remember this is noon, on a weekday, and I am all by my lonesome. She ended up giving me the Crispy Orange Chicken from the 'House Suggestion' section on their menu -- which is $13.95. Mind you, their lunch special for Crispy Orange Chicken is $6.95, plus fine print that states $.50/each extra for egg rolls. All in total, it was about $22 for lunch...for just me. The math isn't mathing for me. Not friendly and dishonest takes away the additional star I'd have ranked this place for good chicken. I feel like there could have been way better service, at minimum, to at least ask if I wanted the LUNCH combo, or confirm that I wanted a large portion of just Orange chicken for just me and maybe describe what that entails. No. You don't get that here. The pictures on their hanging menu board are wanting, as well -- some even hanging off precariously. The rest of the ambiance/decor in this place is very dive, but that would be the least of their worries if they were just friendly. I can even handle the less than stellar - or zero - communication, as well, but can we have some more pictures of menu items on the wall so we know what some of your highlights are? And can we take a picture on an iPhone? Not a 1997 QuickPix Polaroid that fell in olive oil. I actually had no idea they served Pad Thai, which is one of my favorites, until I looked at the menu after I got home -- in preparation for this review. They advertise themselves as Chinese, Japanese and Thai dine-in and take-out. This place has all the potential of thriving if they would just put in some effort for marketing and genuinely trying to assist those walking in off the street -- that in and of itself would have went a long way. Luckily, the orange chicken, as well as their rice, was very good -- the egg rolls were the worst I've ever had; very soft, not filled completely, and mystery contents. All in all, I am very curious to try them out again, for their pad Thai and some other items of interest, but to all consumers out there, you really want to make sure you know what you want prior to stopping in, which is a shame when it comes to 60%+ of your clientele that are more than likely going to stop in after grocery shopping at Lowes, or just being in the general area.
