11/01/25 - Party of 2 - Lunch…read more My mother and I were at a fall festival in a neighboring area and needed some lunch. Not much offering at the festival so we planned on driving to Statesboro. As we drove through Portal, we saw Pepper Jack's. I've been by it many times but never stopped. We decided to check it out and I'm so glad we did! The restaurant is just the right size for the small town. Order at the counter and your food is brought to your table. The menu included some deli sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, breakfast and dinner items. We both chose the fried flounder with two sides - I had a side salad and onion rings while my mom had potato salad and green beans. The fish was fried perfectly and it was not greasy at all. The onion rings were thick and tasty. I had their special Vidalia onion dressing on the salad and it was the perfect mixture of sweet and tang. The best part was the shocking low price. Our meals were $7.99 each! I don't think McD's is cheaper and certainly cannot compare food quality! Super friendly and helpful staff with big smiles and great attitudes. I'm looking forward to having breakfast there this weekend and trying some of their other menu items. Way to go Pepper Jack's!

Shelby, our server, was prompt and efficient. I appreciated her attentiveness when we were finished with plates and needed refills on our fantastic sweet tea! Outside of the restaurant in the back, there is a gazebo/dock to feed the catfish and the alligator. Great scenic view. Now onto the food... We went with a group of 8 people from our church as a couples outing. Fun time. I got the burger which was fresh, beefy and juicy. Fries were crispy and I ordered a side of fried mushrooms and fried stuffed jalapeño poppers. These were all good. Pretty much everything is fried on the menu which is typical of a southern food restaurant. Some people that ordered the fried catfish said it was not meaty at all and this gave it a poor rating. The dessert we had was good. We had the orange peel cream cheese pie and the blueberry cream cheese pie. Both were very tasty and the filling was fresh. The graham cracker crust however had a "freezer burn" taste to it. The hush puppies we got at the grits/hush puppy/soup bar were excellent. I ever took a few and threw them out to the alligator. He loved them too! All in all, it was a good restaurant if you like fried food. Prices were good. I paid $7.34 for the cheeseburger, $6.99 each for the poppers and mushrooms and $1.50 for the tea. I always tip 20% except in extreme situations and my bill came to $48 with tip included. BTW... They accept cash and checks only. No credit or debit cards.

I, personally, do not like their seafood because I don't care for the batter. But that is me - not the restaurant. So what do I eat. Well, contrary to Jason's comment, fried food is not all they have. Their flat iron steak and/or ribeye is the best around. Lots of flavor, cooked to order, and tender. A steak is what I order every time. They also have a crab stuffed potato, which was my Grandmother's favorite. She would make two meals off of it. Finally, you could get a sandwich and fill up on their "help yourself" grits bar. Cheese and butter toppings, and hush puppies to eat with it. Don't like grits, their soup is usually a cabbage and bean soup. It's local fare, family seating, wholesome food. No pretention - just full tummies.

After numerous searches while traveling on 321 to Columbia from the coast, it was obvious that…read morethere would be little to nothing available for an adequate food stop. It was difficult enough to find a clean and modern gas station/convenience store much less a decent eatery. So discovering Elizabeth's was a gift. We ordered a bacon cheeseburger with everything and fries. We split the meal. The single patty was perfectly encased in the right sized bun. All the toppings tasted fresh and in the end, it was an extremely enjoyable burger. Sadly, the crinkle cut fries were barely warm and not crispy. Why? Pre cook the obvious frozen spuds and then just dunk them back in a hot fryer right before the patty comes off the heat. So if I could give 3 1/2 stars I would as the side dish was half our meal and it disappointed. We couldn't sample any of the ice cream creations as the business' s freezers were kaput from the recent storms. Absolutely understandable. Elizabeth's is definitely worth a visit if you are traveling through the backroads of S.C. Just ask for extra crispy fries, you might get lucky.
