I very rarely leave negative reviews, but my experience at this Chili's was so disappointing that I feel compelled to share it.
My daughter, several friends, and I went to dinner as a group of eight. From the beginning, our waitress was extremely rude and was unable to answer several questions our group had about the menu. While poor service is frustrating, I was willing to overlook it. Unfortunately, the way our group was treated at the end of the meal was completely unacceptable.
Our waitress placed the entire table on ONE check without ever telling us. This is an important detail because I had to leave before the meal was over and had left money specifically to cover my meal and my daughter's meal. Had I been told that the entire party would be placed on one check, I would have handled the situation completely differently. I would have simply paid the entire bill myself.
When the group realized what had happened, they explained the situation to the waitress and eventually asked to speak with the manager. At that point, I expected the manager to listen, recognize the mistake, and work with the customers to find a reasonable solution. Instead, the manager was extremely rude and refused to separate the checks.
Because of that decision, TWO young men at the table were left responsible for paying the entire bill, which was approximately $200.
Let that sink in.
These are college students who are paying their own way through school. They did not walk into the restaurant expecting to suddenly have to cover a $200 bill because a waitress failed to communicate how the checks were being handled and a manager refused to correct the situation.
Mistakes happen. I understand that. What matters is how a business handles those mistakes. The manager had an opportunity to turn a frustrating situation into a positive customer-service experience. Instead, the response made an already difficult situation significantly worse. The lack of empathy and professionalism was extremely disappointing.
I live in the Memphis area, and I have been to plenty of restaurants where issues come up with large parties, separate checks, or payment. Good managers understand that situations like this require communication and a little finesse. If this Chili's has a policy regarding multiple checks for large parties, that policy should be clearly communicated BEFORE the party orders--not after the food has been eaten and the customers are trying to pay.
Had we been told upfront, we could have made whatever arrangements were necessary. That opportunity was taken away from us.
I am especially disappointed because this was supposed to be a nice evening with my daughter and friends. Instead, the evening ended with two young people being put in an unfair financial situation and feeling disrespected by the very people who should have been helping them resolve the problem.
I truly hope this was an isolated incident. However, after hearing similar concerns from others in the area, I am concerned that this may be more than just one bad night.
This review is not about getting a free meal or demanding special treatment. It is about basic communication, accountability, and customer service. When a mistake is made, customers should not be expected to bear the consequences while management refuses to make a reasonable effort to fix it.
