Food was excellent. Service was top-notch. Ambiance was above board. I will eat there again!

Traveling has been a thing this year! While in Oxford, MS, I went to a totally different restaurant than El Charro. No judgments but I was headed to the breakfast spot with the initials WH. When I arrived, across the parking, there was El Charro; looking like restaurant you might see in Texas or Mexico. It was packed, it was a no brainer; I'm coming to this place. I lucked up on parking, go in, and head straight to the bar. Bartenders were immediately attentive! Patrons near were nice. I asked for a recommendation, fajitas were among the favorites so let's do it! In my short time sitting several locals chatted with me making this feel like home! Overall with the amount of people there I knew this was the place to be! I liked it so much and raved about it to my family that I had to bring them the very next day! Ambiance is that of a Alamo theme. Decorated with a Mexican theme, this place is beautiful! Attire, it's hot in Mississippi so casual dining it is! Let's get into it! Chicken Fajitas- So Good! Chips and Salsa - Delicious! Combo - Taco and Enchilada - Good! Shrimp and Steak Fajitas- Delicious! Margaritas- YUMMERS! read more

The food was delicious, such a variety of choices it is almost overwhelming. We had a charming waiter who could not of been better at customer service. This is a beautiful restaurant. Fountains, decor, murals, work together to create the feeling of escaping to a tropical paradise. I will be back! read more

Had the best experience with the best server we have had yet here, Brooklyn was so attentive bubbly and nice we loved talking with her! Definitely will be coming back requesting her. read more

Went here during the Winter Bender of 2026 and only had to wait a measly 2 hours. The food was all average nothing special. The bartender white lady was very rude and makes a terrible margarita. Secondly the atmosphere of the place gives nowhere close to the homey feeling I normally get when I step inside to a below average mexican restaurant. I digress, I am giving 3 stars because they were able to keep us fed during the time of natural disaster. Gracias mi amigos read more

This place was nice! Very nice atmosphere and dining room! Lots of places to seat people! I ordered the P10 which is nice and simple. Mexican rice, chicken, and queso on top! The queso was a tad bland for my liking, but the chicken helped balance the flavor. Salsa could have been a little more spicy too. Their menu had a lot to choose from! It was hard to pick one thing because everything sounded so good! read more

Fantastic food. Lots of flavor. Visiting for a game and the this is outside the Square.

Great service! Fun environment! Wife loved the plants hanging from ceiling! Should have sang happy birthday in Spanish. Absolutely too expensive. Shouldn't be close to $40 for me and my wife's meal and we got tacos... read more

Decided to give this a try since we were staying beside it. I have to say, this might be one of the best Mexican places I have ever had. The service was very fast and friendly. The ambiance was fancy, but laid back at the same time. The salsa that comes with the chips is the best I have had. It's got some heat that other might not like but I loved it. I had the chicken fajitas and they were great! I highly recommend this place. read more

El Charro - Chicken fajita - Mexican Near Me - Oxford, Mississippi

Ok worst service ever at any restaurant I have ever been to in my entire life. Fifteen minutes to get someone to bring water. And only got that bc I went to hostess and asked for someone to please please come to bring us water and chips. Waiter finally came over and we begged him to go ahead and take our drink order and bring cheese dip. Asked for napkins and never got them. So went to another table and took their napkins. We grabbed another waiter and asked for chips since they weren't coming. And finally once my order came it was wrong. Y the time it did come, everyone else had finished their meal. No offer of free cheese dip. Or anything. Really really lowered their standards. read more

I wanted to like this restaurant because it came so highly recommended. My family and I traveled to Oxford while visiting family in Mississippi, and someone suggested we have lunch here. The food and drinks were decent, but the service was not the best. The manager seated us outdoors next to the employee entrance gate. Employees came in and out of the gate the entire time we were dining, and one employee pulled a catering wagon behind him and pushed a wrought-iron chair into my 90-year-old father without even saying 'excuse me' or offering an apology. We mentioned it to our server, and she apologized and locked the gate. Then a customer on the patio unlocked it to exit, and the constant in and out by employees resumed. We asked for the manager, who told us that while it wasn't an employee entrance, the gate needed to remain unlocked for fire safety reasons. We explained that we understood this, but if we had known that employees would be coming in and out of the entrance, we would have requested a different table. He went on to explain to us that our table was located next to a children's play area, and many guests prefer sitting there because it provides an activity for their children. Our party consisted of three adults, all over the age of 50 and without a child in sight. The manager never apologized to us, and later we discovered that he had chastised our server for locking the gate. This made us feel terrible. We never wanted her to be reprimanded for her actions. He made what would have been a wonderful review turn into a "try them at your own risk" one. What else made this whole situation odd was when the manager came to talk to us, he was accompanied by another employee who never introduced herself or offered any explanation as to why she had joined him. She stood there scowling at us, never saying a word. Yet another display of poor service. Since we were passing through Oxford, we will likely never return, but I do not recommend El Charro at all. Not worth the money to be treated so poorly. read more

What a nice atmosphere to enjoy a great meal. The restaurant is gorgeous and so bright and inviting. Our service was great and the food was delicious. The salsa is fresh and the queso had just the right flavor and consistency. The fajitas came out sizzling and the peppers and onions were cooked through as I like them and not crunchy. My daughter got P10 which was beef over a bed of rice and covered in queso. She loved it! I really enjoyed that we left feeling full but not stuffed as happens sometimes at other Mexican restaurants. Everything just seemed fresh. The restaurant does offer both inside and patio dining. I did see a drive thru as well but of course with the stipulation that everything is cooked to order. We were in town visiting but I would highly recommend. read more

I arrived in the early evening before the rush so I was seated right away. I really wanted to give this restaurant a great review, given the other reviews on this site. Unfortunately, as a Texan with a lot of experience with Tex-Mex style dishes, I just can't. From the chips to the salsa to the fajitas, everything was just mediocre. There was nothing that stood out as great about any of it. At the same time, nothing was terrible either. The chips were thin and crispy, the salsa was spicy, but not too spicy. The salsa did have a more tomato sauce flavor than I prefer. I got the beef fajitas with flour tortillas. The tortillas seemed to be store-bought as opposed to house made. The beef fajita meat did not have a lot of flavor. The strips were very thin and small; not like you would expect from sliced flank or skirt steak like you would normally see with fajitas in the good restaurants in Texas. There was no charring on the outside of the meat from grilling , and it was not well spiced. I don't think the meat was flame grilled. The caramelized onions and peppers on the fajita skillet did have a nice flavor, though. The plate with the other fixings also left a little to be desired. There was not enough pico de gallo or guacamole to make three rolled fajita tacos. The service was OK but not outstanding. Overall, I think I was pretty generous to give three out of five stars for this restaurant. Unless they have some other excellent dishes that are much better than the fajitas, I don't understand the draw of this place. As I was leaving, the foyer was full of people waiting to be seated. read more

Wow, Im not sure where the bad reviews came from but this Mexican restaurant definitely deserves higher reviews. We were in town moving the daughter into the dorms for her Freshman year at Ole Miss and we decided to hit this place up due to the being near our hotel. Now, let me first tell you that we are from San Antonio TX and we dont usually eat any Mexican outside of TX, but we decided to try it out. Lets just say, we were pleasantly surprised on how excellent the food was let alone the staff was always there asking if we needed anything else and always had my water glass full. We started off with some Chips and Salsa, the chips came out warm and the salsa was nice and mild, we even orders some queso, highly recommend the queso! The wife ordered the shredded chicken enchiladas verdes which was smothered in delicious salsa verde and accompanied with Mexican rice & refried beans, she was very pleased with her choice and even mentioned we have to come back the next time we are in town. I had the Pollo Encremado which was a delicious tender grilled chicken breast topped with a spinach mushroom cream sauce that was to die for!! It too was accompanied with rice & refried beans. Lets just say we will definitely be coming back to El Charro for some down right good mexican food. If your in the Ole Miss area and your looking for a nice little restaurant to take the family or just to get a nice delicious meal, ya got to hit up El Charro, you will not be disappointed. read more

I used to get El Charro to go all the time and would go eat there a lot too. It was easily my favorite Mexican restaurant in Oxford. I would get the chorizo queso, mac and cheese side, and the enchiladas tapatias. The past probably 6 times I have gotten it, it has gotten progressively worse. The cheese in the chorizo queso has not been melted. You can literally see the individual shreds of cheese in it. Not mention the past probably 5 times I've gotten regular queso it has been cold when we received it. The first time I got the Mac and cheese I thought it was literally the best Mac and cheese I had ever had. Now, it is noodles with some watery cheese sauce, almost completely different. Not to mention the service has been bad too. I think it has been getting worse since the new Casa opened but something really needs to change. I have completely stopped going here because every time I was dissatisfied to the point where I've decided it literally isn't worth it to go and hope it's what it used to be read more

Long wait. Food was excellent. Waiters and waitresses were busy. Overwhelmed and bit. Ran out of silverware....lol

I get so annoyed with petty people who pick restaurants apart over the smallest things! I am a huge Mexican fan and honestly 99% of the time most Mexican is about the same. This place is special! Atmosphere is amazing!! Looks like a resort! The drinks were fantastic! The salsa is good salsa, and if it is thinner than you like, they have table side guac, cheese dip, and many other options for apps! They do have steak!! I had it. It was the Carna Asada and it was fantastic! Everything is super fresh and authentic!!! The fact the anyone would give this a negative review is most likely just being ridiculous. No restaurant is perfect so if you have a problem I am assuming they will fix it but with everything fresh and authentic like their menu holds, people need to get a grip. Service was fast. My son had quesadillas and my wife had fajitas. We will be back!!!! No doubt!! read more

We just ate Sunday lunch at El Charro. The hostess and our waiter were very nice and friendly. The food was usual Mexican fare here in Oxford which means it was good!. It is probably the nicest building of all the Mexican restaurants in town. The prices were very reasonable and in line with other south of the border fare. We always like going there. read more

I got the Birria Tacos and it was SO GOOD. I was very surprised but I had always heard good things. Check your food before you leave the drive thru. Ordered Birria tacos for take out which I had gotten before and knew they did it very well, only for the portion size to be laughably skimped on. Only realized when I got home. I never complain about restaurants but the state of the tacos I received was just sad, unfortunately. It was like they took the amount of meat that should be in one taco and split it between the 3 tacos it comes with read more

This is a lovely Mexican restaurant in Oxford that's new to me. I met up with some of my girlfriends for a quick dinner & drinks. I ordered the trio enchiladas with beans & rice. It was fine. I didn't get a drink but my girlfriends enjoyed their margaritas. I would have to visit again to try more things out. read more

I ordered the steak, shrimp, and chicken quesadillas. What a disappointment!...The quesadillas were moist as if I had ordered fajitas...The salsa was bland and thin (I like thick salsa!). I wasted $21 again...I haven't eaten a tasteful meal since one week ago in my home state. I've eaten at restaurants in Olive Branch, Southaven, and Oxford, MS as well as Knoxville, Memphis, Collierville, and Cordova, TN this week...Frustrated is an understatement! read more

The food is great! I've gotten a few to go orders and I have a recommendation on the nachos to go. put the protein and wet condiments like Pico and cheese same container and the chips separate. This was one can decide for themselves if they get soggy chips. I have seen many restaurants in Atlanta do this and it is so much better. read more

I tried reaching out to this restaurant privately through their email address over a week ago. I can see now how they only try to take care of customers when its made public which means they really don't care about their customers. They only care about the bottom line and that is to make as much money at the customers expense. Plus, all I have seen the owner do in his reply to bad post is make excuses. Not once have I seen him try to make it right. Do yourself a favor and go to any other mexican restaurant but this one. Review: My wife, Daughter and I visited on 8/8/2021. We had Ashley as our waitress. We ordered fajita taco salad, P10 and enchiladas vegetarians. Ashley took for ever to finally take our order then once our food arrived the fajita taco salad was soupy so I ask Ashley was that normal and she said yes. I told her that we couldn't eat it and asked her to take it away because we could not eat it. She not once offered to replace it with anything, nor did she offer to remove it off our bill. All the food was very bland and odd. read more

This place has the best Mexican food and menu in Oxford! We got shrimp fajitas and they are large and taste so fresh. They can't be beat! Great blackened spice on the shrimp and veggies mean you don't need to add anything else...but the salsa is bright so pour it on. The frozen margarita tastes homemade and not super sweet like some make them. This is our go-to place for casual dining with awesome service! Ask for Toni or Dawson! Hotty Toddy! read more

After about an hour of trying to find somewhere with a decent wait time my boyfriend and I came to El Charro. Service was amazing. The servers and who I assume to be the manager were extremely kind and helpful. The food was great although my lack of one star is because my enchiladas weren't authentic to my standards. But my boyfriend enjoyed his "super burrito" and we left full and happy. Would definitely love to come back next time I'm in Oxford. read more
