I have used Childress twice to recover furniture, and both times they did an excellent job.

Childress reupholstered a high end sofa and wingback chair a few years back. They did a great job and both.

I have conducted business in the past with Childress Fabrics. They have a wide range of fabrics, along with furniture and a helpful staff. Kottun has been a tremendous help, as I am looking for fabrics to reupholstering. The ONLY drawback I have would be upon calling the main number and reaching the first person representing Childress. The person(s) I've spoken with never identifies themselves (this is phone etiquette 101) and as a common courtesy identify themselves. They are the first-impression of any business. I don't know if this is something the owner doesn't enforce. The person(s) I've interacted when calling sound like they are doing me a favor by being there, but perhaps, because it's not THEIR business do they even care. We started going to Childress decades ago, and our most recent visit also did not disappoint. The staff are kind and attentive, and they have a giant warehouse full of amazing fabric choices. Their upholstery artistry is unequaled. We don't plan to go anywhere else to restore, repair, or remodel our furniture. read more

We had a sofa reupholstered. Super helpful staff showed us all fabric options and gave us plenty of time (and samples to take home!), Our turnaround time from placing the actual work order to getting the finished it was ONE WEEK!!!!! Plus, there was pickup & delivery, both ways ($200.00, built into the final price). Craftsmanship was excellent, service was delightful, and you cannot beat the promptness. We have been repeat customers, and transactions like this are why. We worked with Martha, who was top-shelf all the way, as was every other aspect of the company. It is no wonder why they have been in business for 65+ years. They not only have extensive experience building custom furniture (and can almost build anything), they give such personalized help to every customer who walks through the door. I recently used Childress Fabrics for the second time in 15 years. There is a reason I keep coming back they do a great job. I recently had five chairs, a window seat and two pillows reupholstered. There was a mistake made on my window seat and pillows that they fixed in a timely manner and got back to me. I really appreciated how helpful they were when I needed help and how they left me alone when I wandered around trying to decide what I needed. I have used Childress to source fabrics for a few years and recently ordered some custom drapes from them. The experience has not been pleasant and I would caution others from using their services for custom draperies. When I went in to place the order, I was quoted 3-4 weeks to complete. The original deadline came and went without any communication from the store. I followed up and was told an additional week would be needed. Needless to say, that week also went by along with 3 more, numerous calls and several in person visits before I finally received my order at 9 weeks. The quality of the finished product seemed good, but on installation I found that they had not been made to the specs detailed on the invoice (they were short ). They had to be returned for alterations. Now, they are 10 weeks late and counting. Throughout the process some of the employees were helpful, but if you are looking for compensation for incompetence... you will not find it here. I've been left with the sense that the owners don't really care about their customers, or the fact that those customers have businesses and customers of their own. I went to Childress for my custom drapes even after reading these reviews. Mistake. I figured that I would be different as my mother has been doing business with the Childress family for years. Back in October, I went into the store after calling to bring my fabric and my measurements. Kottun, who I was supposed to meet there, was not working that day, after I was assured he was. After 30 minutes of just standing around trying to get an employee to talk to me, I was told he would call me the following week. He did, follow up is rare in this story so this seems exciting now. I explained to Kottun that I do not have a lot of experience with drapes and would like a little help with the order, didn't happen. He passed that responsibility off to Lilly who was to call me next. She did! She was great, I thought she understood what I was looking for and how to achieve it. I got a call from Kottun a month later that my drapes would be finished early and I needed to come in and order my hardware. I go into the store, as he asked, he informs me that I need to go to a website to see the styles, call him back and order. I asked why it was necessary for me to come in, he says it's because he didn't know what style I wanted...? I go online and decide to order through the company he referred me to, I call Kottun to explain this, he isn't exactly pleased. Two weeks later the hardware comes in and I call Kottun to schedule the installation. He asks if he can run the remainder of the payment, I say yes (stupidly). The installer comes, he is Lilly's nephew. He was greatly helpful especially when I realized these are not the width I ordered and the upstairs drapes are a pair instead of a panel. I looked at the "order form" which is exactly what I gave Kottun almost two months earlier in the store, they apparently did not add the window width to the amount I wanted stacked. The nephew then points out that for $70 he would have come out and taken measurements and walked me through the process. Childress never informed me of that even after admitting to be a novice. Nephew assures me that this is all fixable and not in fact an almost thousand dollar mistake. So here we are two weeks before Christmas and 8 weeks since ordering, and I have to call Childress to figure out what's going on now. I have never encountered such a rude and miserable person, Nancy, was so unhelpful during my two status calls to them. Nancy blatantly lied to me about consulting with a manager on how to proceed and when they would call me, I pointed out the lie and she yelled at me. I called the Addison store to try and speak to a manager, I was assured I'd get a phone call. It's been 2 weeks, nothing yet and no call back from anyone on when I can expect my drapes and what I can expect when I get them. Maybe because I canceled payment to them they are withholding? Maybe management will see this and call me? I'll post back to inform how this all shakes out. read more

My go to place for fabrics. It is unfortunate that I have to spend about $75.00 dollars on gas to get there and back. I love Dallas for all the designer fabric warehouses, the World Trade Center and other to the trade only businesses but I dislike Dallas for being three hours away. Originally owned by Barbara Childress and opened in 1958, the mill direct warehouse has grown to 70,000 sq. ft. Now operated by Ken and Nancy Childress, there is an upholstery shop and a custom lighting and lamp section. Yesterday I strode through Childress like a crazy person snatching samples right and left. I did not want to spend the night in Dallas and knew there would be traffic on the way back. It was a great trip and I came back with about 25 fabric and trim samples for my client. Whew! During my visit, I saw some very cool pillows featuring safari animal prints applied to leather and framed in contrasting Chilean leather. The lamp shades are always fascinating because they are custom made by applying rich fabrics to the shades and adding decorative trim. read more

Love Childress Fabrics and Upholstery! I have used them for 25 years. Nancy is who I always rely on and she has never failed me. The upholstery service is the best I have ever experienced - had used 2 other upholstery companies in the past and there was no comparison. These are professionals and my re-upholstered furniture always looks new again. They are about to build me two custom ottomans and I know they will be as perfect as everything else has been. I've been shopping here for years. It's family run and I've never had anyone be less than kind and helpful. It's a giant warehouse so if you are expecting a sales person to rush up and hold your hand, it's not the place for you. This is where the designers shop and they know what they want . That said, if you need help, go look for it and you'll get it! The selection of fabrics is the best in town. My only complaint is that I generally have to hit the Addison store as well as the Ferris Street shop ( off Good Latimer) as they carry different fabrics. I've had custom furniture made and it has been ready exactly when it was promised to be ready. You can take them a photo of a piece of furniture from a magazine and they'll make it for you! Prepare to spend some time there as the selection is vast. Wear comfortable shoes and don't be put off by the Ferris Street location. The minute you turn the corner you'll see the designer's Mercedes and BMW's and you know you are in the right place! read more

Horrible customer service! I ordered some pricey fabric in July 2015 and was told it would be available in 10 days. Never received a confirmation call or update so I went into the store. My sales rep, Mary stated my order still had not come in after some time. She stated she would check into the matter and call me back. Never called. I call and requested to speak to manager and got the run around. I placed several other calls. After about 2 months ( Sept 23, 2015). I still have no fabric. I have requested a refund with my credit card company. I will NEVER use these people again. read more

This place is just amazing! Fabrics fabrics everywhere... all kinds of buttons and do-hickeys and thingamajigs your heart may desire! I went in to look for a pattern I saw online, wasn't in stock and the young later Kristen helped me look for the books. She actually HELPED... then we say the swatch and both through... ewww. So, around the store you go, looking for that piece that catches your eye... pssst, over here, I'm the one. So I spy a fabric I like, she checked it out and says "you'd better take some swatches home to check it doesn't clash with your paint, then you can call me for a price." I also found a thick spiffy sale remnant that I'll make into a carpet for $10! They make stuff here too, so I will put in a call to Kristen for a price on some window scarves and bedding! Take your furniture for recovering, or select the absolute perfect fabric for custom build, drapery or upholstery at your own risk. TERRIBLE client service. Made the mistake of ordering a $3000 custom sofa from Childress. My deposit was cashed quickly. My sofa only came to me after months of prodding, calling repeatedly for status updates, and threats. A second project at the shop for reupholstry still hasn't made it back to me after 6 months and I can't get anyone from the workroom to the owner to make a simple returned phone call with a status update. I use these types of fabric stores alot, this one was a mistake and is definately taken off my list! Even the owner doesn't read email or return calls. read more

I have used Childress Fabric for years. Kottun is an AMAZING fabrics expert. They reupholstered an 18' mid-century modern curved sectional, an occasional chair and matching ottoman, outdoor cushions for 2 chairs and a 4-seat patio set. They even custom made cushions for my Chris-Craft cabin cruiser as well as stateroom mattresses and sofa seating for the same boat. The company has been around for years, and found out they made 2 occasional chairs that came with our mid-century house and have lasted with original vinyl upholstery for over 60 years! Buyer beware! One of the worst experiences with a business in over 5 years. I have been remodeling my home and needed 6 seat cushions re-upholstered (3 yards of fabric). It took them 12 weeks to return them to me after covering them in the wrong fabric. I wish I had read the reviews before going there. Avoid this business! read more

Terrible Experience! Stay Away. In years past they have made and recovered several pieces of furniture for us which turned out well. NOT ANY MORE. Something has changed around there. We had a custom sofa done which, after multiple delays, came back looking horrible; crooked seams wrong cushions, etc.. Sent it back and waited another 6 weeks and when it came back it was still wrong. Seat cushion was hard as a rock. Tried explaining that this was not the Springdown cushion we ordered. They kept insisting it was the right cushion so we had to physically dismantle it in front of them at which point they realized they had not made it correctly. Spent months without a sofa and literally six trips to both the store AND their construction room. Never again! read more

If it's not at Childress, you need to go back to "good taste and designer vision" school, seriously! Even the one who decorates with distinction and unique charm will find the selection worth the visit. We lined the ceiling of the room used for my daughters wedding in a local church hall with white lining fabric which we found cheap enough to purchase 100 yards. But I have shopped her for those expensive window treatments or slip covers for furniture or pillows. Regardless, if you've GOT IT, they can accommodate you with the best selection and the best cost options anywhere, bar none. read more

Customer service is abysmal. That's actually an understatement. Outright blatant lies after waiting for 3 months for a product. Then, mysteriously they said the job was never sent to the workroom (despite numerous follow up emails and phone calls where I was assured that everything was right on schedule.) I don't know what they're doing over there; however, I know what they're NOT doing...and that's giving me the product that they committed to. Looks like there are several other 1 and 2 star reviews... Based on the other posts it doesn't look like many people are the exception to this type of service. read more

This is the worst service that I have ever experienced. I had two chairs re-upholstered and some pillows made for $2500 and waited for weeks on back-ordered fabric. No one ever called me back, when the fabric came in, the chairs were supposed to take a few days and took 10 days. They delivered 1 chair, told me the truck broke down, they ran out of fabric, then were supposed to deliver the second chair on Saturday, never called me, the driver didn't come in over the weekend so no delivery. When they delivered the second chair, the pillows had the incorrect fabric. Sent them back to be re-done and they fixed half of them. I sent the last two back to be fixed and they still have them. They were supposed to refund an overpayment and refuse to call me back or provide an invoice. This is the worst service, most unethical, unprofessional behavior I have every encountered. Not only does Julie always come through for me, she goes above and beyond what she needs to do to make sure I'm always happy with my selections. Never any pressure to buy. I purchased fabric at their online store. I called the next morning and asked if they had it in stock and they said yes. They told me it should be a few days and I would receive the fabric in Austin. I called back 3 days later and asked when it would be shipped. They said they had to order it and it was not in stock but they would pay for it to arrive in 2 days. After several days went by, I called back and was told that didn't work out so it would be a few more days. They offered to give me a refund of 20%. I finally got the fabric but I still don't see a refund on my card. Two people in management ( all family members, I assume) said they would call me back never returned my calls. They listen to your complaint and act like they are concerned but don't really care. read more

Employees are extremely helpful and courteous and strive to go above and beyond in searching for coordinating fabrics and offering alternative suggestions. Requesting samples was no problem, everyone I approached was more than happy to help. They even offered to provide an umbrella for the walk to the car since it was raining outside. Their inventory is varied to the point that I found exactly what I was looking for in color and pattern, including trims. Great experience. read more

Very disappointed in level of service. I arrived 32 minutes before closing and building was locked, employees gone! I called and spoke with manager or owner at different location. She apologized and said they may have closed early due to holiday hours. Holiday hours??!? It was December 30th...the day BEFORE New Year's Eve!! I drove 30 miles! I have visited and shopped Childress Fabrics on many occasions and recently I noticed they started selling pre-made panels. I went to the Frisco location and decided I would go ahead and order some panels due to some very friendly advice of a guy working there. I was told that if I decided to order the same fabric that the panels were made out of it would take 12 weeks to arrive because it had to be shipped from China and was told I could have the panels in a week. Well I took a couple of days to decide on the color of fabric and went back to order. When I went back to place my order at the Frisco location I was then told it would take 3 to 6 weeks to get the panels in. I asked them why it was different from what the other person told me and they were looking at me like I made this conversation up. Well I decided to order because they made it sound like it wouldnt take more than 3 weeks. Also, I had to pay for the shipping to their store and if I wanted them to be shipped to my house I would have to pay additional shipping. I have ordered fabric from other fabric stores and never had to pay for shipping to their store and thought this was strange. I decided when they came in I was going to speak to a manager because this is not what I was originally told when speaking to this other person. Well I got a call a few days after ordering and was told they would be in about 3 weeks. Well 3 weeks came and went so I called to see if they could check on my order. I was told they would call manufacturer to check on my order. Well they never called me back so I had to call Childress back again and then had to wait for them to call me back later because I guess the only person that knows about any of that stuff was helping another customer. I was then told they would be in by the end of the week but for sure by monday. Well Monday came and went and no call. So I called again and they said they would have to call the manufacturer to check again. This time they actually called me back the same day and told me that I might get them in a week. She didnt offer up any information about why it was taking so long until I asked them. They basically gave me some story about how they had to order them from china and they were behind in their orders. Also they said they were having problems with getting their supplies through customs which to me sounded like a bunch of BS. I have worked for a company that occasionally required me to send hazardous materials to other countries and if you follow the proper paperwork their never a problem so I have a really hard time believing getting fabric through customs is a difficult task. I still haven't received my panels which was a pretty expensive purchase and not really sure if they will get here any time soon. I would highly recommend not ordering any kind of product from Childress fabric because they obviously have no idea what they are doing. Once my panels come I dont plan on spending any more money in this store and will take my business elsewhere. read more

Childress doesn't even deserve one star when it comes to customer service and custom sewing. I gave them the exact couch cover to duplicate and the first rendition took 4 weeks to complete. When I got it back, it was too short. I brought it back to them and they said they would make a whole new cover. When I got that one back weeks later, it appeared to be the same cover they first produced stuffed in an attempt to make the cover longer. When I took the cover back for the third time, the workroom said they could add more material to the cover (knowing that the seams would be off but I consented because I just wanted a couch cover!). It took almost an additional 4 weeks later, after constant callling them and going to their office, for Nancy to pick up the phone when I once again called her just so she could then tell me that they could not do what I had asked of them. Completely incompetent. The workroom and the storefront DO NOT communicate well at all. Neither one will ever call you back to keep you informed of the progress of your order. You are left to do all the work in terms of begging them to get back with you and to get order complete. They have refurbished furniture for me in the past with no problems and yes, they have a great selection of fabrics but beware of anything that you are getting made that is custom and certainly don't expect good customer service. You won't get it. I will never do business with Childress (downtown) ever again. Now I'm left a couch cover that they made and that I paid $300 for, that doesn't fit my couch and that I have to now somehow try and fix. Shameless. read more
