This one's for the bartender who deemed me not disabled enough for utilizing the handicap space when I am permitted to do so. He then tried to humiliate me in front of the customers for doing that. Some customers bought into it, but others shook their head in disbelief of what was happening before them.
He only humiliated himself by making an ass out of himself while I sat there and let him continue with his overreaction totally unaffected by his ignorant assumptions and lack of self control. Based on how he looked at me after trying to humiliate me, I can tell he was trying to get me to react, and was caught off guard by the fact that I didn't budge by his behavior.
After he went out to my vehicle to verify if I did have a handicap placard, instead of holding himself accountable for his mistake, he decided to double down, and create a made up policy exclusively against delivery drivers, which is illegal per the ADA. It's a sad commentary to think that this guy may have been the one managing the restaurant at that hour with that lack of self control and self awareness. If you are going to have your bartender police the handicapped spaces, you'd better make sure he is informed about the laws that come with that, because he clearly is not informed. He assumed that I wasn't either but I wasn't about to argue with some ignorant bartender on a power trip in the parking lot when I had a customer patiently waiting for their order. That's what a good service mindset behaves like, he should take note.
Please educate your staff that not all people with disabilities are incapable of walking. Some people have heart conditions and other neurological disorders, but can move just fine. I have noticed that other reviewers here and on google have also reported some level of discrimination. Normally I wouldn't just believe that sort of thing, but after facing it for myself as a person with respect for service workers and small business and is polite, I can absolutely see where they are coming from.
To the owner: I don't want anything from you, or for him to get fired or something. Not my intent. I've e-mailed you already but haven't received a response.
I'm going to give you some feedback/a suggestion, as a person who has managed semi trucks and large events for a living in the past, (places 1000x busier than your restaurant) to actually solve this problem:
What you need is a proper process in place for the handicapped spaces and delivery drivers.
If delivery drivers (not just food delivery, UPS/USPS/Amazon drivers too) are such a problem for you guys, give the drivers a 15 min designated parking space. The parking space should be about 3 spaces in length, and parallel to the wall, near the corner of your lot. You want it far enough from the corners so that larger vehicles like sprinter vans can park with their hazards on against the wall and move out of there quickly without causing traffic. A decent spot, just to give you an idea, would be right next to the handicapped spaces, but perpendicular to them, against the wall. The best spot would be by the entrance of the lot near the Enter Only sign and if you could extend that standing zone all the way until the exit only sign, that would be even better, even for your neighboring businesses. If you did this very simple thing, so many parking related problems with drivers would be solved. You definitely have the space for it, and from what I remember, the lines need repainting anyway.
If you find the handicapped spaces are being abused by someone who is ignorant, respectfully communicate (VERY important, so they actually learn and respect you back) to them to move their vehicle and until then, mention that you will not hand their order to them. And that you are doing this out of respect to your elderly and disabled customers. If they give you a hard time about it, you proceed to report it to their company (after a warning), and continue to deny them service. If they still don't abide, that's when it goes to the authorities.
The handicapped spaces can be monitored via cameras in front of the handicapped spaces, or manually by adding curbside pickup at your restaurant (you can use the designated parking spot I mentioned for this), where somebody brings the food out to the vehicle, and while they are doing that, they can glance at any vehicles parked there to confirm any abuse of the handicapped spots at which point you'd proceed with the process I mentioned.
Attempting to embarrass people publicly like your bartender did, only makes you the owner, and the restaurant look absolutely terrible. I understand that some drivers are selfish and it's an unfortunate reality, but not everybody is, and not everybody who does this line of work is ignorant and uneducated. People should not be judged by their occupations or anything else. I had plenty of subject matter to judge/harass this man in the same exact way in front of your customers. read more
