I truly didn't look at Yelp before buying tickets to the museum and a showing of the planetarium. My fiancé and I finished walking the museum in 30 minutes because it was full of children from camp. We weren't going to play or interact with the museums when children were there and it was sciences we already knew. I was saddened thinking it was a museum for adults. In addition, we absolutely bought the wrong tickets for the planetarium. We ended up at a KPOP Delon Hunters Laser Show. We didn't know what to expect. Whoever made the show did an exceptional job, but we wanted to see something that completely encompasses the entire planetarium. Ultimately, perfect for children. Not adults. The 4 stars is that it is still a great museum.... For children.

Play Street Museum is located in a nice shopping center with plenty of parking. When we arrived, we were greeted and welcomed by the employees. It is a shoe-free place so make sure you're prepared to wear socks. I was impressed by the entire setup of Play Street Museum. It is very clean, accessible for all ages, and there is a variety of play options. The setup makes it easy to move around to each area. There is an airplane that has different realistic airplane sounds. There is a food/kitchen area, a veterinarian office, a home space with a kitchen and babies, an outer-space section, an ice cream truck, tables with different activities like drawing, sorting, building, and a large lego table. There is so much imaginative play options. All of the toys were clean and seemed new. There is also options to add extra activities like make your own slime, paint pottery, and dye a hat or apron. Play Street Museum also offers to host parties. We loved our hour and a half of play time at this awesome spot! At the end of your visit, the kids get to pick out a snack. We made a last minute reservation as we were driving from Milwaukie all the way to Hillsboro. Our original plans didn't work out but wanted to give my 16 month old a fun day anyway. From the second we walked in we were greeted with genuine enthusiasm for being there. I love the layout as I can watch him from anywhere. There was so much for him to do (even though he was at the train table 80% of the time!) and it was all SO cute! I don't know if we just got lucky, but every other parent/caretaker was extremely kind as well. Also, they give out a free toy and snack on the way out which definitely helped with the heartbreak of leaving. We will definitely be back a bazillion more times!

Quite interestingly, the museum discusses the Spruce Mill (which is located quite literally on the ground you're standing on) which produced lumber for planes during WWI. It ran 24/7. There are lots of planes here on display, and also houses the first plane flown by Leah Hing. She's the first Chinese American woman to earn a pilot's license in the United States, and paved the way for aviation for future generations to come. There's also a small balcony area dedicated to the Chkalov transpolar flight. Three men flew sixty-three hours and sixteen minutes over the North Pole, from Moscow to Vancouver. The landing at Vancouver was unplanned as they were running out of fuel, but they had a warm welcome here. Overall, the museum was very informative and a great way to spend a few hours.

The plants and water features are outstanding, and it is such a delight to just wander around and soak it all in. Really, what can I say that hasn't been said by many other visitors? If you aren't captivated by the running water, the intricate rock gardens, or the lovely koi fish, then there is something wrong with you. This is such a gorgeous gem, and a must-see attraction in Portland, especially if you are already wandering around the Washington Park area. Some of the changes in the years since I visited are a whole new entranceway, with an amazing water foundtain. Plus, a redesigned plaza with new gift shop, cafe, and a library. Oh, and speaking of the the cafe, do try out some of the excellent teas and Japanese snacks on offer here. Plus, all the staff and docents working here were very friendly and helpful. As for a few things to be aware of: First, the parking situation is a pain. There are pay-to-park spots, but not enough for the crowds. So you should really plan to either walk over to the gardens from somewhere else in the park, or take the park shuttle service. Also, as some have also noted, the number of people visiting can sort of harsh the serenity a bit. So do your part, and be a courteous visitor, and try to keep things mellow, chill, and quiet enough for others to also enjoy. In a city so full of other gorgeous gardens, I have to say these stand out. It's a city favorite for a reason.

There are a few steeper / hilly climbs, so I would recommend wearing good walking shoes. I wouldn't say this is the most handicap/wheelchair friendly, though they do have a shuttle that can take you up from the ticketing area to the main garden entrance...but inside the garden there are some spots that have a lot of stairs and some paths & walkways are quite narrow. They have their own designated parking lot that seems to fill up fast. We found parking near the Rose Garden and walked over. It's incredible to think that this garden is just a mile or so away from the city! They also have a tea house and a cute gift shop. A couple of restrooms available located throughout the garden.

From the steam train all decked out for the season to the hot chocolate, candy canes, bells, elves, trees and yes...the big man himself even joined in the holiday fun! The train ride went a smidge past Oaks park. Enough for a good taste of the Christmas spirit but not too far to wear out the kiddos. Loved every second! Even after the ride, the fun continued. A dedicated space to write letters to Santa (and yes, he did write back!!! My little one loved getting his letter), hot cocoa/coffee booth (they hand decorated each cup!). I'll be back every year.
