We drove an hour to get here. I checked the website before going to make sure they would be open because we know a lot of play places are closed on the weekends for parties. They said open and nothing on their social media pages indicating anything different. Now we have to deal with a toddler who doesn't understand why we just drove all that way who was so excited just to turn back around. We also tried calling before we left for another verification, no answer and no hours left on the voicemail to indicate a closure. It's really not that difficult to keep your hours correct on your website.

My grandson so enjoys his visits to the museum. Between the train track table and the enovative dress -up green screen stage, he is engaged and entertained for hours. I really appeciate how the space is divided into activity rooms - Arts and crafts, technology and building and open play - leaving room for the the kids to find their space and their adults to help when needed. The museum listens to feed back and makes changes to the setting and supports when needed. I note some negative reviews here and wonder what space they visited because this has not been my expereince.

We visited over spring break and had a good time! From what I understand, they currently are doing a "soft opening" so there are not quite as many exhibits as they hope to have when completed and they have discounted pricing to reflect that. We paid $13 for my todder and myself to play for 3hrs of play time, which I thought was both ample and fair. The main space has some really fun big play items like blocks/tiles large enough to build play houses with, a scarf launcher, a car racing ramp and then a stage with green screen so you can see yourself on TV. There were also loads of costume choices and we spent a great deal of time trying them all on. There is a second smaller room with a light table and some art stations. After you color your picture, you can scan it into a scene up on the white board and watch your creation move around. Very unique and fun, I don't think we've ever seen this before at an indoor playspace! There is no food or drink for purchase on site (that I saw) but they do have a table and some chairs set up in the hallway so you can bring a snack from home. There was a good amount of free parking behind the museum that can be hard to find the first time you visit but easy to exit and memorable enough to where it likely won't difficult to locate for repeat visits. Overall, this was a fun and unique space and I look forward to seeing the new exhibits they add in the future.

We have passed the Rice Northwest Museum of Rocks and Minerals many times since we moved here last…read moresummer and I'm delighted we finally had the opportunity to visit. If you are the least bit fascinated by rocks, minerals, and fossils, RUN, do not walk to this museum. I was always the kid who had a collection of rocks in their pocket. Okay, okay, I still love to pick up and save (sanctioned) rocks, but my point is, I love rocks and minerals so this place is Andie-coded. Before the 2005 closure and rebuild of the San Francisco California Academy of Sciences, they had an incredible wing dedicated to rocks and minerals. When they reopened the new building in 2008 the permanent exhibit was no longer on display. Eventually, they brought it back to a smaller alcove. I used to think that was the ne plus ultra of exhibits and while they display a vast representation of rocks and minerals from around the world, I have to say, based on the sheer volume at Rice, my jaw dropped. The Rice museum predominantly displays PNW region samples. I was delighted to lay eyes on one of my favorite minerals, labradorite. When we purchased our admission, we were met by the loveliest person who was not just a wealth of knowledge, I could tell that they had a pure joy for rocks and minerals. It was this unbridled enthusiasm that led us to spend a few extra dollars for a dual membership which also has reciprocal value around museums and points of interest in Portland and Oregon. As they extolled the history of the Rices (hello, the Rices were incredibly fascinating!) and the formation of the museum from their family home, I was riveted. Without giving too much away, this unique 1950's-era home architecture is intriguing and lends itself beautifully to this loving and intentionally-curated museum. There are special exhibits along with a mahoosively impressive resident collection of rocks, minerals, and fossils many of which you are encouraged to touch. I especially enjoyed Inside a Mermaid's Collection by Paulina Z who designed, curated, and hand illustrated and lettered everything on display. When we visited they had a sands of the world exhibit (A Day at the Beach) for view under a high-powered microscope and also displayed via a digital microscope. If you have littles, they have a fabulous exhibit inspired by mining video games that connects the real world to imaginative play. The docents are so kind, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable. They foster an environment that's welcoming and encourages curiosity. There are special events throughout the year and classes (Learn Faceting!), AND you can even adopt a mineral! I can't wait to return and bring our daughter and anyone who's visiting us that shows the slightest interest. If you pardon the pun, Rice Northwest Museum of Rocks and Minerals, is a gem of a find!

The complex Covers four buildings. Two of them are for the museum, one of the buildings holds a giant screen movie theater that screens, some amazing aviation related movies, and the fourth building is an indoor waterpark, complete with a retired 747 parked on the roof. The emergency exits to the 747 are entrances to the waterslides. The primary building, where the spruce goose is located, covers aircraft from a replica of the original Wright Brothers flyer, to modern military aircraft. The secondary building, is the space, museum. It has aircraft such as the SR 71 blackbird, a model of the Apollo, lunar lander, and other space related exhibits. You can easily spend hours here. Admission is reasonable, and they offer discounts for military/veterans, seniors, youth, and local residents. Annual memberships are also available. To see the Spruce goose I highly recommend the flight deck tour. It's $25 on top of the museum admission, not cheap, but without it, all you really see is the entranceway of the plane. I took the tour, it was a 45 minute tour, it goes through the entire plane, and the docent talked about the whole history of the plane, it's different components, etc..... It was originally a prototype for a massive cargo plane, but because it was not completed by the end of WWII, there were no others made. It only flew one time, and there was a really cool recording of a reporter who was actually on the plane for that flight. It's definitely worth the visit.

There are tours given by volunteer docents, veterans or aerospace professionals. Many of the docents are around the museum and will give you interesting information about the exhibits in their area of expertise. Jerry was our guide to the Spruce Goose. He was a wealth of knowledge and made the tour very memorable. The entry is $24 for adults, $21 for seniors, Youth $14 and children under 5 are free. Tours are available for $25 per person. Tip: Individual membership is $85 and you can bring 1 guest which entitles you to a free tour of the Spruce Goose which is cheaper than the individual prices, plus, member pricing, events, a newsletter, plus discounts or free entry into other museums, aquariums and other places in Oregon.
