My daughter and I went here this evening, what a mistake. I must preface my review of this restaurant, normally I like this establishment having frequented the Vallejo location a fair share of times and overall I have always been very satisfied. Tonight, however, my experience sucked. My wife really likes there chicken and asked me to go pick up some food for her. I took my 18 month old daughter at around 8:00pm on February 13th. When I walked in and stepped to the counter, I actually thought the place was closed. So much so, that I said, "are you guys closed?" They said no, still no greeting just some empty stares. Didn't really phase me, an hour before they close ~ PROBABLY A LONG DAY. I ordered, paid for my order and even tipped them. When the girl at the counter gave me my order, I asked her if she had a prepacked salsa and sauces. She told me "no", and pointed to some trays around the counter. Now keep in mind, I was still carrying my daughter in one hand and hot chicken in the other. I asked her if she could pack some for me, she said she could not. I reminded her that the other locations did this, she did not respond. So I stood there and packed the salsa and 7 minutes later. I silently picked up my bags of food and put my hand in the tip jar and took out the 1.50 I gave them. Never again. read more

There are many places to eat on Texas St in Fairfield, CA. Fortunately for us, I Yelped ahead and found ourselves here for dinner after an eventful day traveling from SoCal and completing a Six Flags challenge (check out our adventures here: http://legomars.blogspot.com/2015/08/two-six-flags-two-cities-one-day.html ). So, the four of us were pretty hungry and ready to eat some good food. As previously stated in other reviews, this restaurant is very similar to the El Pollo Loco franchise. There are beans, rice, and other assorted side dishes and then the main attraction, the rotisserie chicken. I'm going to be bold here and say that the chicken here is MORE flavorful than the aforementioned franchise. If Chicken Express was in our neck of the woods (SoCal) we would be frequent diners. Well see what had happened was, I was gonna give this place 4stars,BUT something went wrong. I went here on the suggestion of my cousin who lives out here. He swears that they run 50circles around Taco Bell (which i'm never going back to, whole 'nother story). So I just needed to eat something hadn't eaten all day. He said we could get 2 tacos for $2. He comes back with chicken tacos, nicely seasoned, with salsa sour cream and cheese. They were still fresh, crispy shell, added some hot sauce (which coulda been hotter if you asked me, this is where Tapatio hot sauce would come in handy), they were hitting the spot. Washed them down with some cold brews I was good. . . . . . . For just an hour or so....just as I telling my cousin how they need to expand down to the East Bay, they'd probably run TB out of business. Great food, real healthy chicken etc (hence the reason why I was gonna give 4stars) .As I'm taking the looong trek home, I start to get this rumbling sensation in my stomach, and I tell you I couldn't get home fast enough to just GO. Tried the Fairfield one out today. We ordered the chicken family meal with Spanish rice and mashed potatoes for sides. The Spanish rice had no flavor at all. The mashed potatoes were watery. The gravy had zero flavor. As for the chicken, it was crap! Greasier than polo loco, with no flavor at all. Bottom line. Their burritos and sandwiches may be good, but their chicken sucks! read more

eehhh... So I went in here expecting fried chicken... :( Rotisserie?!?!? That's not all. So I go up to place my order. And the cashier asks me "rice and beans?"... what!? And I say "..uhhh slaw and mashed potatoes". And then she asks me if I want flour or corn tortillas. So for the record, this is a Mexican style chicken place. Their seasonings are good, the main problem is that the white meat get's so dry. I'm not a fan. But, it is a healthy and very inexpensive option. So I can see why lots of people love it. read more

Yum!!! I recently stopped by to pick up a family pack at this location for a girlfriend's 30th birthday. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the meal! Very reasonable, great quality and convenient to feed a family or larger party. I think there is room for improvement on their salsas, but other than that - Chicken Express is an excellent choice! read more

Don't judge a book by it's cover! I just found a NEW love at this unassuming place. I actually came back for the next meal the following day! lol! My first meal (Monday) was the 2-piece chicken and it came with beans and rice and a drink. I think it was around $6.50. It was surprisingly AWESOME. Who would have thunk?!!! It was definitely better than Costco and the beans and rice was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! I also love the salsa bar! The green sauce is my fav! So the next day comes around (Tuesday) and I'm craving for more chicken, but someone here on Yelp had mentioned the chicken salad, so I ordered that to go. The chicken salad was more of a dip as it came with chips in lieu of a tortilla shell. They did put quite a bit of sour cream on it, which made it unhealthier, but next time I'll ask for sour cream on the side. Two thumbs up and now one of my favorite places for grub!! I can't wait to try more dishes! Today is Wednesday where they have tacos on sale and I want to go sooooo bad, but I don't want them to think I'm obsessed with them and not have a life!!!! read more

My first review. I grew up in Vallejo CA. and frequented the Chicken Express there my whole life. I've had everything from taco salads, rotisserie chicken, corn on the cob, mashed potatoes, spanish rice, all their chiles and salsas and their TACOS. I have to admit that I love the place because its been in my life for who knows HOW long. The food here is simple, and not too greasy. I love the chicken tacos and go crazy for them when they do special promo prices for them on holidays. Plus the staff is always friendly. Honestly some of the best semi-fast food in the area. It's nothing special by appearance and in a bad area of Fairfield, but the food is bomb. I always get the chicken burrito, which is pretty cheap and a good size. The soft tacos are huge, and the crunchy tacos are small but flavorful. The chicken meals are really good too, and well worth the price. Just make sure to get packets of their hot sauce -- it really tops it off. read more

I had been eating here since I was in high school and they had the lunch special of 2 tacos, small rice and soda- back then the tacos were also only .79 and tasted amazing Over the last few years I have noticed that the service, food and prices have all changed for the worse. I believe a single taco now costs around $1.50 (keep in mind, they are tiny) customer service is pretty much non existent and the tacos are always watery. Idk why, but there is tons of liquid seeping out of the tacos which makes the crispy tacos soggy. There was one time I pulled up to the drive through maybe 30 mins before they closed and instead of telling me they were closed the lady working there glanced at me and then went about her day; seriously. First of all, they shouldn't have been closing early- second of all, she could have just told me they were closed instead of leaving me sitting there. So so tasty. The chicken here is juicy and full of flavor, not over-cooked, never dry. It's similar to those El Pollo Loco chains, except Chicken Express has better chicken, better sides, generally better food, and better prices. We always receive coupons in the mail, too. I never liked El Pollo Locco and so when we tried Chicken Express for the first time, I thought I wouldn't like it either. But I was wrong! My hubby took me here while visiting him at work. He'd just discovered the place with co-workers and I HAD to try their tacos.There's nothing flashy about the place or the food. I walked in to the establishment and was hit with the strong odor of bleach. Hey, guess they're squeaky clean. Behind the counter were dozens of whole chickens just rotating on the rotisseries. So...many...chickens... Anyway, we got about 6-8 tacos between us. I think there was cheese on them, not sure. No lettuce, tomatoes, nada. I put sour cream on some of mine but honestly, didn't need it. I think the beauty is in the simplicity of these tacos. The shells are standard hard corn ones and it's just filled with chicken. Tender, juicy, deliciously shredded chicken. There's not a whole lot in this town which is unfortunate. But if anything in Fairfield is worth stopping for it's this place. read more

I love my rotisserie chicken from this place. I look forward to going for take out and I can suggest to my b.f. "Let's go for Chicken Express." Even my two year old son (who's a picky eater) loves their chicken! I've been recommending this place to my friends and coworkers a lot because they keep telling me that El Pollo Loco's rotisserie is the best. I don't think so! I can say that this place doesn't look classy or even appealing in the inside but that doesn't really count if their food is good. If you're hungry you'll devour everything but the plate. So to say that some people won't even try this place because of how it looks on the outside or inside, they're truly missing out on the best rotisserie chicken they've ever had in their life. The workers are always very nice and prompt. Yes, they speak spanish a lot but they're talking amonst themselves so who really cares. The price for what you get is reasonable and pretty much very cheap if you get a meal. Unfortunately, they stopped serving the Horchata and Jamaica drinks. I loved their Horchata's, it went very well with the meal that I always get. So when I come here, I always order the family whole chicken meal with spanish rice and beans. I also love their salsa. I have eaten here many times. The food is good. Nothing special but good. The restaurant is dirty. The walls need cleaned. I actually feel quite uncomfortable eating here because of the state of the dining room. This place needs a lot of work. Paint peeling, trim coming off tables, dried food on the walls, trash in the parking lot. The list goes on and on. The cashier was not very nice. We waited 7 min for her to finish a phone order and she never acknowledged us. After the phone order was finished she look up and said what to you want. I felt as though we were an inconvenience. My family and I used to be obsessed with this place but we really have been disappointed the past year or so. The chicken is dry and honestly, it's too expensive. A whole rotisserie is like 14 or 15 dollars when I can get one from Costco for half the price and Costco's is more juicy. read more

I can't believe this place has gone downhill, don't get me wrong the food is still descent but when there is a stench so overpowering that you can't even eat your food in the restaurant as well as having to share it with so many flies. This is a review for the Fairfield location only, called in with my order and even though the food was ready 5 mins later when I arrived, the service was lacking.The young ladies working looked like they hated their jobs, I misunderstood the check in offer and the girl literally made go through the whole check in process only to tell me it was if I had purchased another item. Some of the tastiest rotisserie chicken I've ever had. The chicken tacos are not authentic, they are crunchy shell but they are oh so delicious. You can't beat the price either. For dessert they have some excellent red velvet cupcakes. I live in the Sacramento area and drive down every so often just for the tacos and to go hiking. Love it! read more

Chicken Express is good but their establishment is filthy. Their bathroom is always dirty and they never have paper towels. There are always flies in the restaurant and that drives me insane, and there is always cartilage from the chicken in the meat for the tacos. They were better before they moved by Arco. read more

Nothing here really warrants any good comments other than the horchata was pretty good. The chicken wasn't too flavorful, even though it's supposed to be their specialty. The portions were very small and the service was a bit rude at the time. Not too fast either. It's pretty easy to miss if you're not actively looking for it. But hopefully you aren't. read more
