Whenever we're in the area, we stop in. This is a kitschish staple in Costa Mesa/Old Newport. A Place the locals hang out. The service was great, always right on time. I found my favorite chicken: broasted, so juicy and perfectly prepared. It was accompanied with homemade mashed potatoes and the perfect gravey. I can't wait until next time! read more

Food - A 5***** - they make their food homemade here! It's amazing they take the time to even hand make the Alfredo sauce for the fettuccine. My fiancé noticed because he thought it was a little lumpy but I didn't notice that. Service - A+ 5***** - top notch. They make you feel like you are at home and you're very special:D Ambiance - A+ 5***** - friendly and lively. We went on a Friday night and it was kicking. Came here one morning for brunch, and it was divine! Why aren't more bars open for breakfast? I'm sure there's a whole host of reasons, but that's besides the point. This is a divey bar that happens to serve some real delicious offerings in the morning. It's got dingy vibes, but like...in a really positive way. The decor is perfect for a nighttime brewski, but it's oddly charming for the morning too! For some reason, chicken and waffles were the way to go for our party. We ordered like 5 of those suckers, honestly, we should have ordered more! They chicken was fried so well, and retained a lot of the moisture despite being cooked really really crisp on the outside. Paired with some hot sauce and maple syrup, it was kind of a no brainer. Surprisingly, I don't normally get a meal like this for breakfast, but I think I had to after reading reviews about this place. The waffle wasn't anything amazing, but it definitely did the job. It was a good tasting carb to pair with the chicken. Can't really have one without the other in this context. Lovely meal that I'd come back for time and time again. First off, yes the music was a little loud especially for Sunday lunch! And yes, the service was four star. The chicken curry wrap was very tasty and generous. It is great that they have gluten free options for people. My husband said it tastes like food I make at home but my chicken tinga taste best and my taco meat for chicken is moist. He said he rather eat home, most likely when they stew or braise the chicken meat, they did NOT allow the meat to rest and absorb the sauces.. But the star of the place was great service and atmosphere for people to get together after work and there was an amazing cucumber aqua fresco so it hits the tastes buds really well when having heavy food. We have been enjoying the chicken coop since 2006! For almost 20 years we have had the joy of consistently great food and the best waitstaff! Food is delicious, portions are generous and smiles are on all faces! We absolutely love Horacio, Chewy and Victor who have taken care of us since day 1. Chicken coop is also a great place for a large party! I had 40 of my friends there a couple nights ago for my birthday and everyone was blown away by the food and atmosphere. This is the best local spot in town! Cash only! They do have a ATM. The portion sizes are HUGE so come hungry or share and the prices are so so reasonable. Of course they have the best chicken, but try the pizza too! And their breakfast is also amazing! read more

Was interested to try this place seeing the other reviews and lack of social media presence but it totally lived up to the local hype. The restaurant itself it's super chill and casual. Everything was clean inside. Service was also great even though they were quite busy for dinner. As for the food, started with the bread and omg why was it sooo addicting. Loved the jalapeño poppers and the fries were good. The broasted chicken was also good and a hugeee portion. Skin was super crispy. If you're looking for a healthy or fancy restaurant I would look elsewhere but for casual comfort food, highly recommend! read more

If I could give this place 1 star I would. Mind you I use to go here from time to time a few years ago. Always had great service no complaints. Decided I wanted some of their fried clams I like. I stop by sir at the bar. I see the bar tender make eye contact with me then see a few other people who were there before me so he service them no problem. Then another guy shows up he service him. I'm still not serviced. Then he finally asked have you been help? I shook my head no. He then replies and a very condescending way are you going to talk to me. You need a menu something? Obviously you know I haven't been helped!! Obviously I need a drink or menu or something, he knew all of this just wanted to be rude. I'm going to gather because I'm African American is the only thing that would make me think is I was the only black person there. Everyone else got proper service. I will never in my life spend another dime in this type of establishment. Racist much!! read more

I was introduced to this wonderful spot by my fiancee and his family. The Chicken Coop is a special place for them and they have fond memories of coming here with their uncle Javier as kids. Old fashioned American fare served with consistency and quality for years. They're known for a few things they do right and among them are broasted chicken and fresh oysters. Not too many places serve up broasted chicken let alone on the same menu as oysters. The ambience is cozy, warm. In the evening, lighting is dim and makes for a cozy and intimate vibe. Upstairs I am told is a banquet area. There's a bar area as well. I highly recommend Chicken Coop for any occasion. The bar area is a bit noisy but sometimes I find the noise level comforting. I don't see a lot of staff but they make up for that with quick, accurate and kind service. Consistently checking in to make sure you're enjoying your meal. Prices are reasonable as well. Chicken Coop is definitely a special place. read more

My bf took me here for the first time. I had the tamale meal which came with your choice of pork or chicken tamale and sides of Spanish rice and beans. Also had a Mai Tai. It came as a recommended drink. Pork Tamale. Served wet with red sauce. The dish came out hot. Literally... it was a heated plate. Loved that it was served wet. I love a moist masa tamale. Beans. These were refried pinto. Delicious. I love beans and can never cook them right myself. Flavorful and went well with the tamale. Told the bf that I wanted to come back for another meal at another time. Needed to taste the rest of their menu. Atmosphere was very chill and the place was packed. Thi is one of my friend's favorite spots,She has Her Birthday celebration here every year. It never disappoints. It's a Bar and Restaurant combination that has mouth watering food options from Breakfast items like pancakes to fish& Chips and and an array of Mexican dishes like Civvehe, quesadillas and Mexican Shrimp cocktail. In a very lively environment. With friendly staff I always anticipate and get really excited coming here year after year. To have the bustle of happy people and fun euphoria all around the bar. We were told about this place from a couple of friends that are locals. we went in to try their breakfast and were surprised how little the inside was but there was a lot of seating we got a bloody Mary and ordered breakfast, and the food came out fairly quickly the food comes out on a big plate The food was really hot and we would be back for sure not to mention how good the bloody Mary's were check this little dive bar out if you're looking for a good breakfast the service here was right on and made sure we had everything and checked on us if we wanted more drinks. Watch out the Bloody Mary's are good. read more

My friend and I came for a late lunch. I got the fish and chips which were okay. The fish was very thin, and it seemed it was mostly breading. My friend got tacos that looked incredible. I tried the beans and rice and they were excellent. The bartender was super kind and provided great service (he was very attentive). This place had a much chiller vibe on a late Saturday afternoon. Because of the name we went in looking for fried chicken dinner. NOPE. The menu is a typical truck stop diner menu with the decor of a truck stop. I ordered a hamburger patty, biscuits and gravy, and country potatoes. I asked the server to hold the eggs because im allergic. The server decided because I asked for no egg I shouldn't have the gravy and brought me a dry biscuit and my potatoes covered in cheese. The potatoes ended up hard and stuck to the cheese like glue. I asked for a side of gravy and got about two tables spoons in a plastic cup. This was a huge fail! How assuming of a server to change my order. My boyfriend introduced me to this place, he has been going to over 10 years and i have now been a regular for the last 3. We love Horacio, Victor, and Chewy as they are funny and will make you anything you ask for. Cash only, total dive bar, and the best spot for a hungover Sunday breakfast. This place is old school and reminds me of my childhood. My parents used to go to the original Zubies all the time. The food was good and fresh. Maybe a little too much cheese on a couple things, but like I said it is old school. Drinks were good and portions were giant. Service was fast and friendly. Prices have definitely gone up, but that is how it is everywhere these days. I will be back and take pictures of the actual food next time!! read more

Food wise order the dozen oyster chef choice, grill cheese, chowder fries, ahi and lobster taco Dozen oyster there were 3 types all on the brinier side with the final ones more brinier than others and accompany with ginger 2 types of chili sauce and pickle red onion Chowder fries a bit on the salty side with some bites but had a nice chowder and fries ratio With little heat from the Fresno chili that were garnished Tacos were served with in a blue corn tortilla, for $6 each on the smaller side like a street taco and flavors wise pretty basic, didn't stand out very much Grill cheese with 4 pieces very buttery toast nice crunch and gooey melty cheeses Overall pretty decent food but wasn't impress with the service and though short handed, there wasn't a sense of urgency to assist, minimal acknowledgment, and wasn't checked back on after food was dropped off as others were being asked around us Also noticed in their food kitchen window as dishes were waiting to be picked up there was a plate of burger and fries and someone from the kitchen twice with barehand taking bunches of fries from a already prepare plate to be delivered. Seemed very odd. Unsure if would return to this establishment.

The wife ordered the sea bass with shiitake mushrooms and unfortunately it was cold and the fish did not have the freshest taste. I tried it to make sure and that was the case. Luckily the saving grace was the Mahi Mahi sandwich that I ordered and it was perfect. The fish was perfectly cooked and the Mrs ordered that as well. Server was kind and switched the dish for us. Place Is always crowded in the evening. Will come back and try it again sometime.

The syrup tasted a little off and the lemon flavor was way too overpowering. I prefer just a hint of lemon, but these were definitely very lemon-forward. The passion fruit drop cocktail was probably my favorite thing we ordered. Sweet but still strong... my favorite! Also really enjoyed the butter and the fresh strawberry jam. We had a decent time and enjoyed the atmosphere, but nothing really stood out enough to put this place high on my return list.
