I wasn't going to stop, but when I saw the sign for Apple Cider Donuts, I HAD TO! There was SO MUCH to choose from! Maple Syrup in small jugs or in glass maple leaf containers. Blueberry muffins, Cinnamon sugared and regular Sugared Apple Cider Donuts. I decided to try both. They were cake donuts and very filling and delicious. The Cinnamon sugared donuts had a hint of cinnamon but both types of donuts were delicious and sweet and I even got some maple syrup to go! This is a nice small stop and the people are very friendly. AMAZING cider donuts! The Chichester Country Store (formerly Stevie D's) has reopened under new ownership, located at the skewed intersection of Route 28 and Main Street in Chichester. This is the epitome of a classic New England general store, which is housed in a century and a half old trading post built in 1847. This country store offers convenience store items, cold drinks, as well as Van Otis Chocolates, Stonewall Kitchen products, and a full service cafe & deli, which is the basis of the review. There's also a big cheese wheel near the deli counter. Boar's Head meats are used and sold here. The cafe/deli counter is order at the counter (pay at the front register) with stool seating near the counter and self serve dine-in table seating in the next room (in the historic old house attached to the store). They make fresh homemade cider donuts (deep fried behind the counter) in several varieties, fresh baked goods, eggs, 2 egg omelets, pancakes, French toast, burgers, hot dogs, hot & cold subs, sandwiches, and soups. The breakfast sandwiches are grab and go for convenience, but if you have time, they can make you a fresh sandwich. Green Mountain Coffee (self serve carafes or K-cups) is offered here. The prices here are very reasonable and they offered a special of 2 donuts and a small coffee for $1.99. My coworker who lives in the area has been raving about how awesome the donuts are at the Chichester Country Store. He stops in each week to pick up a dozen donuts and to grab breakfast with his family. After hearing about it for a while at work, it was making me hungry. I had to make the trek over to Chichester. I stopped in here for breakfast takeout before heading to work. I ordered a Spinach & Feta Omelet ($4.25) with homefries & wheat toast (add $0.50), which was cooked to order on the grill behind the counter. I also got 2 cider donuts (sugar glazed and cinnamon sugar) with a small Green Mountain Coffee ($1.99). A full breakfast including coffee and donuts came out to $7.35 with tax. The omelet was very good, which was folded eggs over a grilled spinach & feta mixture. The homefries were browned and seasoned with parsley and had a slight sweet taste. The cider donuts were AMAZING with a slight crisp on the outside and soft inside. The glazed cider donut was one of the best I've had, melt in your mouth awesomeness. The coffee was brewed on the strong side, just the way I enjoy it. I will definitely be back here again! This is also a good place to stop to/from the Lakes Region. My coworker talks about stocking up on the donuts and bringing some to an upcoming company party. Can't wait. I never bought anything except the Apple Cider Donuts here. Frankly, the donuts were underwhelming. The store itself was essentially a convenience store inside of an older building. It's nice, but nothing to write home about. The service was that of a typical convenience store in the area. I want to be kinder in this review but what has happened to this store? Service was so slow despite 8 people behind the counter. No one was assisting the lone cashier. There were also no donuts left (12:30 PM). We ordered a small and a medium chicken salad sub and one of them came on a bulkie roll which was not what we ordered. Because it took so long to make (over 10 mins), we didn't have time to have them change it to a sub roll. We wanted to wash our hands but they closed the public bathroom. Amazing, great, funky and cool.. So, first let me say, I am not a local and there is something to be said about a sense of community, but I did not see anything that would leave me to believe they were anti-community. Second, the two lovely ladies that my wife, 4 year old daughter and I interacted with were wonderful. All I am going to say is that these could have been trolls working there and for those donuts, it would have been worth fighting through. I have been in a running argument with a buddy of mine about donuts from Rhode Island to Texas. All I can say is these may be the single greatest donut around. They are a cake donut, so if that turns you off, I would understand, I am not a huge fan, but these are different. You must make the effort for these things, you will not be disappointed. Next, they have a specialty milk (Chocolate, White, Strawberry & Blueberry) from Sherman Farms up in East Conway, NH. I know it is not right there in Chester, but I think that is fairly 'support the local farmer'. It was amazing. All in all, if you are not supporting these folks or if you have never been by to say hi, they are worth the stop (and a second chance). read more

The sandwiches and pastries are great here, and I want to give these guys the benefit of the doubt (because I'm a local), but... the service is terrible. It's gotten to the point where I check the parking lot as I'm driving by. Fewer cars = better service, which is unfortunate. If there is more than one person in the store at a time, the entire staff becomes stressed, and no one really takes the lead. The entire staff will regularly go in the kitchen to fix orders, leaving the register unmanned for several minutes. You can tell these guys are working hard, but it's painful to watch. I wish the owner would schedule employees to meet high-volume points of the day, and/or train everyone how to deal with multiple orders and higher foot-traffic. Again, the food is great, but it is not enough to add stars to this mismanaged establishment. read more

Wow, what a disappointment. I was so excited to have breakfast here and get some donuts to enjoy on this fall morning. We got six donuts, a few to eat while waiting and some to bring home. The only thing that was wonderful about this whole trip was the donuts. That's why they're getting at least one star from me. For the donuts only. Not for the food, not for the coffee, and not for the service. My husband ordered three slices of French toast and I ordered scrambled eggs with bacon and toast that's it. I ordered a large coffee and my husband got some flavored milk in a bottle. When I went to get my coffee at the self-serve station every pot was empty except for the dark roast. I asked if they could make some more and she had to make it fresh because there was none already made to be filled. So that was a good 10 minute wait. We sat at a table and were the only people there sitting waiting for food. Another girl came in after us and ordered a breakfast sandwich and sat to wait. We were only people in store waiting for food. After ten minutes the girl who same after us got her food. We were still sitting waiting watching patiently but getting frustrated and after a half hour of waiting we still didn't even have our easy French toast and scrambled eggs and bacon. the guy at the counter kind of noticed my distraught face and went and asked if we were all set I said we still haven't had our food. he went back to talk to the cook when I heard the cook say 'I thought that was already done". Mind you it was busy, but only with donut purchases.... we were still only people sitting waiting for food. We saw the Cook start to make our eggs bacon and French toast, a very quick breakfast. He finally brought it out to us and he apologized and said this was his fault, he thought He already made it so I threw our slip out.! In my mind how would you know if you made it or not, I don't know. My three strips of bacon were dark and dehydrated. I asked for new bacon that wasn't overdone and he made me three new pieces. My eggs were sitting in oil on my plate and the new bacon was incredibly greasy. I think that for the $6+ that I paid for two scrambled eggs and 3 slices of bacon with toast... it was so not worth it. It seriously was the worst breakfast I ever had and all it was is simple two scrambled eggs and bacon. I was very disappointed plus the fact that we waited over a half hour before it was even noticed we were sitting there with no food. My husband enjoyed his white bread French toast, although we paid a dollar extra for real maple syrup up and I don't think he got it, it didn't taste like it but after waiting so long he ate what was given to him. He said there wasn't enough syrup for the three slices as what was given was I a thimble sized little container. So for the quick breakfast we thought we'd have, this was so not worth it. The star was for the donuts only. That's all this store is good at in my opinion. Very disappointed with service and food quality. read more

My husband and I stop in every couple months and also purchase their goods at local Farmer's Markets. The grilled food is pretty tasty - simple but nothing special. Now, the special part comes to the donuts. I haven't had a bad one yet and they are AWESOME! Store ownership changes hands every few years (third or fourth owner in maybe 10 or so years, was closed for a few years in the beginning of my recollection of the store), so beware that any later review MIGHT be for different management, consider if the store is still operated by operators that other people have posted about. I think they are now affiliated with Catamount Farm (Catamount Farm delivery trucks are parked there every day) Catamount is a hard working firm that will deliver food and milk to your house, so I would assume that work ethic spills over into this store. The store location isn't super bad but then again, the store is NOT set directly on rt 28, so, IF you can see it as you are driving 50MPH, you will have to quickly deal with a funky 'highway exit' (traveling south) and/or triangular island (traveling north) to get into their parking lot, and that highway exit situation makes getting into their parking lot quite a surprise if you don't anticipate it properly. NOT AT ALL the fault of the store, but nevertheless, the difficult access will affect your efforts. I feel bad for any owners of the location - it is quite hard to see the store from the northbound side of the road until it is too late to slowly come to stop. If the town could let them put an electronic sign in that 'traffic island', that would probably solve the problem of drivers finding it. Hello, town fathers? A little assistance there would go a long way! That aside, the last time I stopped in (late spring 2011?), they had JUST been reopened by the current owner with the Catamount Farm trucks, the store selection was vastly different compared to the previous visit which I made, and the previous situation was more what I stopped to visit. On my current visit, I really saw little I was interested in purchasing, and the selection was, well, I'd say a bit ... thin, since they had just reopened. Today is early December, they are still operating, so things should have improved since my visit. read more

We stopped by on our way to Lake Winnipesaukee after reading the reviews!! We were so glad we did. Got deli sandwiches that were made using Boars Head meats(my favorite). The Italian was delicious. They use Fantini sub rolls. They also have several brand of glass bottled sodas. They have 5 little seats and three at the counter where you can sit and watch the made from scratch doughnuts being made! We got a half dozen of the cinnamon and sugar to go. They were very good!
