Today I had the displeasure of experiencing a very rude & belligerent customer while getting my hair done. A woman (who's race I will not mention) came in the salon and complained from the moment she walked in. I chalked It up to her having a bad day. She made very rude and distasteful comments towards her stylist and the stylist remained professional. She was then given a new stylist and complained about the stylist not knowing how to do "straight Japanese hair because this is not a Japanese salon". She then began to made very insensitive comments about African Americans and black owned businesses. As an African American I was highly offended and mortified that someone would behave in this manner. Although she behaved the way she did, the stylists and owner remained very professional and did not stoop down to her level. When It came time to pay for the service she received she complained about the price (that she was quoted online when she made the appointment and in person when she walked in). She then refused to pay for the service she received which led to the owner to threaten to call the police. The woman became very belligerent as she was asked to leave and shouted many racist slurs on her way out of the door as myself and other salon customers were in shock. Safe to say after taking a brief breather, the owner finished my hair and SLAYED as she always does. I commend her for remaining cool and collected in a very negative situation. I booked Carline based on her five 5-star Yelp reviews. I had high hopes for my silk press experience. I had a trim 4 weeks prior to seeing Carline (attached is a photo of my hair 4 weeks ago) and despite taking out cornrows on Sunday, I thoroughly detangled and prepped my hair for the process. Here are my issues with the service in no particular order: 1. Carline performed my first two shampoos which were DIVINE! She curtly told me after the 2nd shampoo "Monique will take it from here." Ummmm, who is Monique? Oh, she's the assistant who I thought was just a kid hanging out in the salon after school. Herein lies problem #2. 2. Monique's shampoo technique was the worst experience I've ever had. She literally banged my head against the shampoo bowl, not intentionally I'm sure...she's just ROUGH! She did ask "Are you tender headed?", to which I replied "yes," thinking it would soften her touch...NOPE! In an attempt to make conversation, Monique told me that in her experience with observing Carline, she does great work with natural clients. I asked how long she had been an assistant and she said "well to be honest today is my first day." WHATTTTT?! You had a newbie assistant work on a first time client?! No bueno...and what about this wealth of experience she had observing Carline's work? All 5 hours of it?! 3. I lost tons of hair in the detangling process. There were moments I had to bite my lip to refrain from screaming. FINGER DETANGLE GENIUSES! It works! 4. Here's what really took the cake; no it wasn't the horrified, "omg I actually have to work on a client with long, thick hair" look that was plastered on Carline's face the entire time, it was the fact that she used a $2 paddle brush to blow my hair out without properly detangling. She was smug about my reservations with the brush. I told her that my regular stylist (who is taking a brief hiatus), always uses a blow dryer with comb attachment as this works best for MY hair. She told me that this wasn't her technique or preference. Meanwhile, the other stylists around her were using comb attachments. Then she had the nerve to ask "Is your hair always this tangled?!" No it's not. In fact, she created the tangles with her lackluster approach to detangling my hair. It took her about 5 minutes to realize it needed to be detangled in sections; I have a lot of hair and she was combing from TOP TO BOTTOM. If I had any qualms about returning to Carline, I might as well say goodbye to my locks now. If you are a natural client in search of a stylist, sure, book Carline. She can style hair. But she doesn't know the first thing about proper hair care.
