Finally, life is coming back into an area that has witnessed a lot of business closings in the last couple of years. The developer of the 1400 S. Michigan building, where Waffles now resides, never poured the concrete in the retail spaces; since 2008, it has been just a depressing view of dirt and beams as you walk by the windows - until now.
Wait time: It was the morning of the Chicago Triathlon. We (and many others) waited outside in the seats provided for about a 1/2 hour.
Service: While we waited outside, servers came out and offered samples of crumb cake and some other delicious creamy chocolaty baked good, and offered everyone water and coffee if they liked. Nice! We were seated at one of the communal tables and it was fine and not at all cramped. Although our waiter never messed up our order or anything, he was "interesting". We figured he must have been severely hung over based on the look on his face, his general air of "zombieness" and lack of speech! He didn't offer us the cucumber or lemon water, and we had to ask for water refills. Someone else brought the excellent Intelligentsia coffee and made sure of refills. We had to ask for salt and pepper, but received it promptly. It took us about 15 minutes to get our food, which I didn't think was unreasonable, especially considering how busy they were.
Food: As excited as I was for this new brunch place to open, I was skeptical. Traditional breakfast/brunch fare is not the focus of the food. I admit I was tempted to play it safe and order either the "Plain and Simple" which is 2 eggs, bacon and toast, or the "choose your own 3 ingredients omelet ", but I resisted, and am definitely glad I did. I tried the Waffle Benedict (liege waffles, roasted pork shoulder, poached eggs and aleppo hollandaise). When the food arrived, I thought it might be a bit pricey ($11.95) for the amount of food received, but I was wrong. It was perfect. I was full, but not "unbutton your pants, need to nap" full. The waffle was somewhat sweet, but not overly so, thank goodness, and the rest savory. Yum, yum and yum!!! My friends were happy with their orders as well: the omelet with fresh ingredients that were chopped to a good size and mixed in well to get ingredients in every bite. The chicken and bacon waffle (while it can never beat the original Roscoe's) was good; the chicken was tender and lots of bacon. And finally, the cheddar and short rib waffle. The braised short rib, scallion and syrup mix was awesome, although the cheddar was a bit absent and the syrup was a bit sparse. Additional syrup was provided promptly upon request.
General: Parking is easy. Close to public transportation (#3/#4 bus, and Redline) and it's easy to get to by bike after a lake front ride. Considering Waffles has only been open 12 days, and this is only the 2nd weekend open, I think they are doing a good job of working out the inevitable kinks that take place in any new restaurant trying to figure out its groove. Glad they do have simpler breakfast items to choose from and salad and sandwich options as well, as I know I'm not always in the mood for big breakfast or even breakfast at all. Definitely want to try the Pazanella salad and/or the Cuban sandwich next time I go back. I will go back!!! read more
