It's not often that I hear, "Whatever you want, I will do." Alrighty then, waiter!
I purchased a Travelzoo voucher ($19 for $40 value). Friends are M.I.A. lately, so I wasn't going to waste it. The place has gotten mixed reviews, so I did not go during a busy brunch time. I aimed to use as much of the value as I could because of the concerns regarding portion size. A book was in tow. Also, I figured going between 8 and 9 a.m. on a Friday would help my experience. I was likely correct on all accounts.
I came in and stood awkwardly for some seconds before a waiter came out of the kitchen to direct me to a table. There may have been four other diners there. He knew I was alone and sat me in a direct (but not craning neck) view of a TV. I told him the Travelzoo voucher situation, saying that I wanted to get two entrees, not at the same time. Each of the entrees should come with a hot chocolate flight. Then, I sat back and stuffed myself silly:
- OMELETTE w/ GOAT CHEESE & SPINACH: It came with the well-liked breakfast potatoes and toast. The menu didn't mention this and the waiter only asked what choice of toast I wanted (wheat or white). I think the egg of the omelette was a bit weird and the filling wasn't well distributed throughout. Also, the spinach had unexpected (again unstated) pepper bits, which did help the taste. The toast wasn't Texas, but I liked the variety of jam. The waiter asked if I wanted butter (strange, doesn't that usually come automatically?). Best item on the plate? The potatoes.
- RED VELVET WAFFLES: I figured that I better order what helped convince me to try this place. Unfortunately, there was no discernible chocolate taste in the waffles. There were two triangles of them, which would constitute 3/4ths the size of a regular waffle. It came with a strawberry topping (not cherry, as stated in the menu). Good thing I like strawberries! They provided a lot of whipped cream cheese topping on top of one of them. While it helped take the place of syrup (not automatically provided), the amount was gross. I left a lot of it and part of the soggy waffle that it was laying on.
- HOT CHOCOLATE FLIGHTS ($6.95 each, not on the menu): I enjoyed them. They came to the table hot each time. I could taste the differences in each one, although the peppermint bits on the top of the vanilla and chocolate-hazelnut ones made that more difficult. The size was acceptable, because if you combined the three cups together, you'd probably get a 6 to 8 oz. cup of cocoa. Now, would you pay $7 for that size? I don't think so, but it was a lovely treat. Best of the flight goes to the chocolate-hazelnut!
Everything came as requested. Yet looking at my receipt, I noticed that the total was over $40. The waiter apologized, after I pointed out that I had not ordered coffee. Yet I should have examined the receipt more thoroughly because I had been charged for a Waffle Benedict ($11.95) and a Plain&Simple ($7.95). Luckily, what I actually did order was basically the same cost.
I left full for the rest of the day, but not enthused. It's not good when I leave a restaurant called Waffles and the standouts are the potatoes and hot chocolate.
Waffles needs to work on its ordering system, lowering its pricing on some items, and food execution. Also, as a big waffles fan, the flavor, variety and size for the waffle aspect is lacking for the price. I was encouraged to see the liege variety as an option. Unfortunately, I'm still on the hunt for a go-to place for crispy on the outside, lovely on the inside goodness. read more
