With an easy to remember name, Chicago Dumpling in a suburb of Chicago, serves up a variety of Japanese and Chinese inspired foods, in a fast food type set-up in a strip mall with plenty of parking. Before dropping us off at the airport, my wife's aunt treated us (my wife, her mom, and me) to lunch. I got to choose the place, and the experience ended up being really great. Even though it looks like you are supposed to stand in line to order and pay, the restaurant also supports a typical dine-in experience. It's an open kitchen, with seating on the side. Once we were seated, we were given menus and a tablet to place our order, but our server stayed around to explain that she would be back to help us place the order. She was the only front of house working, and she was friendly and efficient, constantly going back and forth to service to-go order taking and dine-in. The one page menu has two parts: a Chinese part and a Japanese part, and had items that we call could eat. Once we placed our order, the items came out in the following order, after being made to order. Karaage ($6.95) - five pieces of all white meat chicken, freshly deep fried. Everyone liked it, though I wish the coating was crispier. Tonkotsu Ramen ($15.95) - My wife's aunt and I got this. We both agreed the broth should have been served a lot hotter, but it was flavorful. I was especially impressed with the Chashu pork, two thin but generous pieces, nicely crisped first before serving. Edamame ($6.50) - my wife's go-to when at a Japanese restaurant. Chicken Shoyu Ramen ($15.95) - Got one for my wife's mom, and then ordered another for carry-out. One has the choice of thick noodles (classic ramen), or thin, or rice noodles. Pork and Crab Meat Xiao Long Bao ($13.99 for 12 pieces) - one can ask for it prepared steamed or pan-fried. It's great value since it is machine made and guessing prepared from frozen. It's more meat than broth in the filling, and the taste and mouthfeel was OK. But I was impressed that it was offered here at all. Would get it pan fried next time. Scallion Pancakes ($6.50) - served last, this was outstanding. Very thin and crispy. Just wish it had been served first so we could all enjoy...most of us were full by the time it came out. We paid at the end through our server. My wife's aunt really liked the 'Chicago Dumpling' t-shirt that our server was wearing, and wanted one for herself. Our server did mention that they do sell it for $30, but were out of them at the moment. We were given take-home containers to self-pack, and was warmly thanked by everyone before we left. Ordered carry out. They called to say they were out of pork for the shrimp/pork/leek dumplings and they would make "seafood" ones. Fine. Well, what they actually meant was they would make the pork and shrimp without the pork so I got dumplings that were literally 1/3 filled, no leeks just some onion shavings. Most of them had a single tiny shrimp in them, that's all. I'm appalled they would serve us that, probably because it was close to closing and they wouldn't be open to deal with me once I got home and realized what they did. I love dumplings and live close by, I would've been a regular customer, but those cheap mfs lost out on that. If you didn't want to completely fill the dumplings with "seafood" then just refund that part of my order. Simple enough? Beware if you order from here. read more

Nice restaurant. Plenty of seating to or dining in. The service was nice the guy was kind, professional, and quick. I love dumplings so I was excited to try this spot. I started with a strawberry & red guava jasmine tea with lychee boba. I did the less sugar option of 30%. This was perfect as it wasn't sweet not bitter. I choose kaggage chicken which is really good here. Smaller bites than I've had in other restaurants but solid flavor and crisp. 1) Beef and onion dumpling- good. I liked the flavor and was happy they had a beef option. 2) chicken and cabbage dumpling was so good 3) Xiao long bao chicken soup dumpling... Pefrect pan fried bottom and really good flavor. This is an excellent addition to the western suburbs and it's less than 15 minutes away from our home! We recently had a family lunch on a Sunday at 11 am with 10 adults and four children. We ordered and shared the following: 1) Hong Kong Style milk tea with boba 2) Brown sugar milk tea with boba 3) Scallion pancakes 4) Agedashi tofu* 5) Vegetable spring roll 6) Pork and crab meat xiao long bao (pan seared)* 7) Pork xiao long bao (steamed)* 8) Pork and leek soup dumpling 9) Zucchini glass noodle and wood ear mushroom dumpling* 10) Tofu and wood ear mushroom dumpling* 11) Shrimp and chive dumpling* 12) Seafood rice noodle Considering our party size, we ordered and tried several items. The ones with the asterisk are some of our favorites and we would reorder when we return. The Hong Kong milk tea was freshly brewed during our meal so it took a bit of wait. I think the brew could have been a bit stronger though. The scallion pancakes, xiao long bao and dumplings are made from scratch so there will be a reasonable wait for them to be prepared and served. For the most part, everything was brought out in an efficient manner and we did not think there was a long wait time between items. Orders are placed on individual tablets at each table. Our group was large and some people arrived later. So we ended up placing a drink order before their arrival and then ordering food after their arrival. We did not encounter any issues with the separate orders. Service was attentive and friendly. We dined in for over two hours and we did not feel rushed. read more

Chicken karage is a must, so crispy, and juicy!! Soup dumplings are also really good, got the pork ones. Love that it comes in 12 definitely worth the price. The brown sugar walnut bao buns are also addicting. J definitely recommend trying this place everything was good. It is also super convenient that you order off an an ipad which i love. I went on a slow night. I saw only one dine-in customer by the window. It's my first time here, gotta try the ramen and dumplings, I said. I ordered Tonkotsu Ramen and Chicken Dumplings. The ramen was served probably about 15 mins. It's a mediocre ramen, nothing special. The chicken dumplings??? Not served! Been waiting for it, the server would not even say the status of my order. I finished ramen, been sitting there for long time and still no dumplings. Oh well! I had to cancel the order, no reason to sit there and wait. You know what I mean? We ordered take out on a Friday night. It was easy to order using the touch screen at the restaurant and our food took 10-15 minutes which was great. We ordered 2 ramen bowls and an appetizer of crab rangoon. We went straight home (2 minutes drive) and by the time we got home, the ramen was almost cold. Overall pretty decent ramen. We had a tonkatsu ramen and miso pork ramen. Noodles were done well with a little bit of chew. The pork was ok - flavor was good but texture a bit tougher than other tonkatsu ramen I've had. Broth was ok, not as deeply pork flavored and silky as Santouka but still a nice flavor. The chicken karage was good as was the takoyaki (octopus) - both better than average. Restaurant was nice and clean, counter service was attentive. Price was about average.
