It's overrated and overpriced. I'm not sure who all these people giving high ratings are, but apparently they had very low, bare-minimum expectations and still rated this place so highly. It's more like a slaughterhouse than a spa--not clean at all. The showers were not working when I visited. Another review from a month ago mentioned that the steam room was not working, and it's still not working. Apparently, they don't care much about customers--just profit! You enter a tiny, tight underground place that feels like a prison from the Middle Ages, and the reality is nothing like the pictures. Welp, I didn't love it! I was looking for a steam room (I prefer steam over sauna heat), and Chicago Bath House caught my eye because the price was great -- $45 and no appointment needed. That's hard to beat. I went alone and stayed in the women's section only. I didn't try the restaurant. The staff was fine -- not overly friendly, not rude. The women in the section, though, were super chatty and welcoming, which made it feel comfortable right away. One thing that surprised me was the gender policy. While in the women's section, there was a fully nude guest with male anatomy in the hot tub. I wasn't aware ahead of time that this might be the case. I'm not sure what the official policy is, but clearer communication on the website or at check-in would help guests know what to expect before arriving. The steam room itself was smaller than I imagined, but people were kind and made space. The place definitely leans into its "oldest traditional bathhouse in Chicago" vibe -- and it shows. It feels nostalgic, which I actually didn't mind. What I did mind a bit were the linens. The towels were clean but dingy, the robe I was given had a hole and a yellowed stain, and the slippers were peeling. Nothing catastrophic, but noticeable. My man got us a couples massage and two facials when we got there everything was fine the massage was great we both enjoyed that. When the time came to get our facials my partner was still getting prepared the lady came to me and said 30 mins or and hour and I said give me a second to ask my partner and when we comes out she was waiting for us and I asked will there be two people to do the facials and she said no so there was a misunderstanding with getting the two facials we had that we can do it all together as we did the massage when I told her we no longer will do it she said "I left my house for this I could've stayed home" I was in shock by what she said super taken back because that was not something that should have been said. I am the client and that was horrible customer service she was upset and handled it so unprofessionally. I understand business and also understand customer service and what the facial lady said just put a bitter taste in my mouth and her reactions and interactions with clients does not excuse her culture or behavior. During my Chicago girls trip I thought a great way to end would be to visit a spa. I've never been to a Russian spa, but I have a few friends who have told me about one where we live and thought this would be a good idea. I got it on Groupon so the pricing was good. I go to a lot of spas, but this is not the same experience as a spa in a hotel. We were able to park on the side of the building, which was nice as parking in Chicago has been an issue. As we walked in, I showed him my Groupon and we were provided towels, robes and sandals. I like that they give you an assigned key and you can then use that at the bar to pay for whatever you order as you typically won't have your credit card on you. We went downstairs. The area was pretty clean. The facility had a wet sauna dry sauna and Jacuzzi tub. There is what is considered. I guess a cold plunge, which is basically a shower pull that puts cold water on you. The massage services were not available which sucks because I think it would've made this so much better experience. However my girlfriends and I enjoyed the sauna and a beer upstairs. The best Russian bath house in United States.. in our humble opinion. It has separate zones for men and women as well as a co-ed option. The saunas are nice and hot. Facilities are clean. On Sunday late night it was empty. The food at the restaurant is authentic Russian and... delicious. And staff... Hamlet at the restaurant, and Victor who provided platza and scrub are very welcoming. The American: The Platza was HOOOT as hell. So I was gifted a spa day at the Chicago Bath house. To say this wasn't close to what I anticipated is an understatement. First, the location. This spot is located off busy Division street. Parking is not ample but available off the street or you can use their small parking lot off to the side. You feel like you've walked into any other business other than a spa. The smell isn't inviting.....you smell cigarettes and pool water. The dressing rooms are located on the lower level. Everything is dated and you're concerned about cleanliness. I got a massage, a facial and a pedicure (my gel manicure was still fresh, no need to redo). My massage was painful ....my facial was lovely surprisingly and my pedicure was mid. Their robes came in only one size, medium , sorry top heavy ladies, bring your own robe. DO NOT FORGET YOUR SLIPPERS. Do NOT walk barefoot in the locker areas (they do not provide slippers). My rating is actually one star but I gave 3 stars as they were really friendly and attentive. Unfortunately not pleasant enough to return for another spa day. I had a really good experience when I first went here 5 months ago. This time, it was pretty awful. There was no running water. Let me repeat, no running water at all in a bath house. Hot tub was luke warm, no water being pumped in. Shower didn't work, can't rinse off when you come in. I went to the bathroom, there is no running water to wash hands. I bought a Groupon for the Bathhoose to check it out while on vacation. They have two saunas a dry one and a wet one. I loved both of them. The dry one was extremely hot. There is a small jacuzzi and a cold plunge. The cold plunge is not traditional like a bath you dip your body in. This one you pull a handle and the cold water releases heavily on your body. It was a nice feeling after exiting the sauna. I had a beer at the upstairs bar which was good. The place is not very large and does not have alot of amenities like a typical spa but for the price it was chill. There are no phone allowed in the spa area. read more

Came here with my boyfriend for some us time. In the women's area, there are 2 saunas (184 degrees and unmarked for the second), showers, and a hot tub. For co-ed, there's a sauna and a waiting room. I was under the impression there would be a water circuit available - think sauna, steam room, cold plunge, salt room... but that was wishful thinking. $40/a person for a day pass which includes two towels, sandals, robe, and a locker for your belongings. I don't think I'd return because I prefer the more pampering/upscale spas and circuits, but I'm sure my boyfriend would be here all the time if he could. read more

Had a few hours to kill before my flight back home and I spent it here. Very relaxing, laid back vibe. Bring your swimsuit. They provide robes, towels and slides. On the ladies side, downstairs, there is one large sauna, one steam room a couple of lounge areas, a jacuzzi and several showers. There are also private rooms for body scrubs which I enjoyed. Upstairs, there is a bar and restaurant where you can dine in your bathrobe. Prices are affordable, drinks are well made.Great spot! read more

It is just ok. A very small two person hot tub with no jets (water could have been way warmer), a wet and dry sauna, again small, dully lit with dirty mops and pails on the floor. I asked for the mud wrap and they gave me the salt scrub. The salt scrub was barely a rub and definitely not a scrub after one quick pass of an oily salt and 7 minutes under a plastic film with towels on top, a shower and lotion. $150 dollars with tip included. The demand the tip as payment - By the way, this isn't legal. The cost was way too high for the cheap scrub I received. I'm reading some of these reviews and am quite shocked. I've been going to the Chicago Bath House for quite a few years now and make every attempt to visit monthly as a treat to myself. I visited this establishment prior to the name change from Red Square Spa to the Chicago Bath House. I have NEVER had a bad experience and the attendants have always been open to feedback and quick to respond to any issues. I have always felt welcomed and and the customer service is warm. I have purchased spa services, but mostly just enjoyed the sauna areas. Every space is consistently clean. The sauna is very spacious allowing for several women to enjoy at once. The wet sauna I don't use often, but my friend only uses it. When I've used it, I did quite enjoy it. I turned on the jets, set back and enjoyed it. The steam room seats five to six people comfortably. The sitting area has space for about five people. There is a bench and 3 additional chairs with the foot rests. The co-ed area is also clean. I have used the co-ed sauna and co-ed sitting area, and eaten at the restaurant. I have visited the restaurant even at times I am not selecting any spa services. The food was very good and the service is always great. Keep up the great work! I highly recommend. read more

the co ed area may is like a hallway, the steam room there is intolerably hot (i'm russian, so trust me on the temp), if ur going as a couple spa experience DONT!. If I could give it a zero I would. The staff were not hospitable at all, the food was subpar. I went downstairs to use the sauna and it was disgusting. The jacuzzi wasn't working, a light bulb was out in the steam room, the lockers are broken, there BUCKETS OF BROWN DIRTY WATER scattered all over. The steam room seats 2-3 max, same for the jacuzzi. On the way up the stairs to the restaurant the stairs were dirty with dust and crumbs, upon reaching the door we are greeted with mops and more dirty buckets. After speaking with the staff upon our departure, they denied everything and were unhelpful. Asked to speak to manager and they just took my number down instead, I will not hold my breath. I've been coming here for 15 years. The wet suana is the best in the city, but the cold plunge is the main attraction. Unfortunately for the ladies, there is no cold plunge on your side, just a giant pipe that dumps cold water from above. (They also have this in the men's area if you're not comfortable sharing the cold bath.) The last few years business has picked up (probably joe rogans fault) while there are more people there is alot less full frontal nudity. Always leave feeling incredible and clean. My buddies and I make it a holiday to go here once every month or two. It is one of our favorite places in Chicago. I will say the spa area is very gender segregated. If you go with a mixed group expect to be split from your opposite gender counterparts until you eat together upstairs, which I highly recommend that you do. The food is very traditionally Russian and very good. There is a small coed portion with one sauna, though. The men's spa area has a cold plunge, a cold shower, hot tub, sauna and steam, along with many showers. It also has various loungers in case you want to take a break or read a book. I've always been fascinated by this place but never came! My husband gave me a spa day for Valentine's Day and I'm so glad I tried it! I had a great massage with Romero and a great facial with Elvia! I also got my nails done by Elvia and she was wonderful. They add 15% upfront to each service and they charge you $15 to take off your nail color!!! Also additional $20-40 for the usage of the bathhouse depending when you go.... So I honestly don't think I'd do that again- too small of a hot tub or the sauna ( unbearable for me) or small steam room again but my services were wonderful and overall service was great!!! If I could give zero stars, I would. I've heard a lot about this place and was very excited to visit. I've been calling them two days in a row during their working hours, but unfortunately no one bothered to respond. On the third day, they picked up. I asked them, if the sauna is separate or combined, and they said that most of them are sharable. I met my friend there, and learned from the front desk that that information was quite un accurate and only one sauna room is sharable. We had to leave, since we wanted to spend time together. Second time I went there with my female friend who was visiting me from LA. We went there very hungry. I ordered the borsch, she got ribs. After 45 minutes I felt like they are making it from scratch, however, when I finally tasted it was pretty disappointed to find out it was at least 2 days old. Ribs arrived in an hour. Sauna rooms itself were dirty and filthy. One out of two rooms was off. Ladies with kids added bubble bath to the shared bath tub. Shared sauna room was occupied by a big loud group of people. When I brought up to the front desk that soup took an hour to make, they simply ignored it. Terrible place, wont come back. read more

I have been coming to this bath house for many years, and have always enjoyed the experience. This time was quite different. Before going into the sauna, I noticed the temp for the sauna was 204 degrees. It was not possible to stay in there for more than a few minutes at a time. When I left, I had informed the front desk of the temperature and how uncomfortable it was. Their response was, that temperature is quite normal, they even go up to 240 degrees and also do work in the sauna at that temp. This is what I found on the internet... The temperatures for the traditional saunas range between 150 and 190 degrees Fahrenheit (66 to 88 degrees centigrade). Unless they bring the temp down, I would not recommend this sauna. read more

Went here tonight and had a bad experience. The spa only has a steam room, jacuzzi , and sauna. The jacuzzi wasn't working. One of the lights in the steam room was out. Probably 10 random buckets around the "spa" area, some of which had brown liquid... when we went up to the restaurant the stairs were super dirty and there were mops everywhere. We told this to the front desk when we were leaving and they offered nothing, didn't say sorry even and basically denied everything we said we just experienced.
