It was one of my grandparents' favorite places, and I have fond memories of coming here when I was younger and having their roast beef sandwiches. So we came in tonight specifically excited to have that experience again. The restaurant was far from busy -- only a handful of people appeared to be dining -- and we saw the roast beef sandwich listed on the menu as a Sunday seasonal special from 4-8 PM. When we tried to order it, however, we were told it was unavailable. To her credit, our waitress was very kind and even went back to ask the chef whether they could prepare one for us. Unfortunately, the answer was still no. That's what makes this so frustrating. Roast beef is what the Red Osier is known for. For a long-established restaurant in a small community, you would think there could be some effort made to accommodate a customer asking for one of the restaurant's signature items -- especially when that item is actually listed on the menu for that evening. It wasn't an unreasonable special request or something completely off-menu. We simply wanted to order the roast beef sandwich that the menu said was available. Maybe this seems like a small thing, but when you return to a restaurant because of decades of family memories and nostalgia, it's extremely disappointing to walk away feeling like the place you remembered no longer has the same sense of hospitality or customer care.
