Spice Corner was his savour when selecting the mixture of mainstream and more obscure ingredients required. I don't think there is any herb or spice that the stall does not stock. The aromas that waft from the stall are fantastic, it makes me feel immediately hungry. The lady that served us was fabulous. Extremely helpful and knowledgeable about all things spicy, she guided us into finding what we needed, whilst also interjecting her own hints and tips. The prices are significantly less than the brands that rip you off in the supermarkets. So much better value, and the quality is incomparable. The stall resembles somewhere that I would like to shop, grocery shopping with personality.

There are also lot of packets of mysterious looking dried bits and bobs, bread, dates, some fruit and vegetables and dried and fresh herbs. The signage is much neater and clearer than many of the poorly signed stalls in the market and it packs a huge variety of products into a tiny shop. Prices are pretty cheap here and the staff are friendly and informative. At Spice Corner you're sure to find all the constituent parts of a good home-made curry and several new and unusual ingredients to try!

East West cash and carry is an Asian convenience store / mini supermarket / cash and carry…read moreThere are only a handful of these specialist stores in the town and this is the best one. Never buy spices, Indian herbs or any Indian cooking ingredients from a supermarket as you pay way over the odds and for such small quantities. Practically all of the customers who shop at East West are Bangladeshi or Indian and they also supply a number of restaurants and takeaways. They get a delivery of fresh Asian vegetables every week (normally on Monday) and their in-shop butcher looks after the Halal meat side of things. It's great to try all of these Asian vegetables as they are cheap and if you don't know what to do with them the shop owner are happy to help or just have a look on the net. They have about 10 large chest freezers what are full of Asian fish and other special foods. I buy my mutton from here as these Asian supermarkets are practically the only places that sell mutton. Mutton is great for curry or any slow cooked meal and it is cheaper than lamb. If you have not shopped in one of these places before then it may be a new experience at first as sometimes when I shop here I have to step over the odd guy who has just unrolled his mat out for one of their many prays they do each day. Also don't be put of by the untidiness as this is how they all are, In general, shop here for all of your ingredients, don't be afraid to ask if you are unsure and give the supermarkets a miss.

All dishes on our menu are small plates. We recommend ordering 3 dishes per person (or more if youre hungry) and sharing all dishes with the table so you can enjoy all the flavours Thai food has to offer." Thai food is one of the hubby and my favorite cuisines. AND I love to sample and share new foods. Perfect! We chose the following: 1) Moo Grop sauce Makarm (Crispy pork belly with spicy tamarind sauce) 2) Jaw Rang (Prawns with coconut milk, fresh turmeric, lemongrass & chilli) 3) Pad Thai Pra To Pee (Pad Thai noodles with egg, beansprouts and chives) 4) Coconut Rice 5) The special: Khao soi (a coconut curry noodle soup) Angie was our server. I told her what I liked and asked her what on the menu would best meet my expectations. She was right on the mark. (Of course the hubby ordered his normal - Pad Thai.) It took a little while to get our order, but they were extremely busy. And they were making specific dishes just for us. The dishes were unique. The chef made them his own and each one was delicious. This was a hit with both the hubby and me. The restaurant is very small with limited seating. We walked in without a reservation on a Wednesday night at 7:30 and , thankfully, they squeezed us in. My suggestion is to call ahead for a reservation. You will be glad you did. Yum.

You whiz past this shop on the train line which goes southwards from Manchester, and I have often contemplated pushing the emergency stop button to come and grab some of their fresh fruit and veg. It is not as large a store as the one in Rusholme, and doesn't have such a sleek and shiny feel to it, but still stocks a wide range of reasonably priced fresh produce out front, and inside they stock all of your East End and Rajah spices, lentils, beans and pulses, rice and miscellaneous objects such as henna tattoo kits, all at reasonable prices - cheaper if you happen to want 5kg of rice, or 1 litre of curry paste. OK, so most of the products are Indian, so 'worldwide' maybe isn't quite the right word, but they do trays of delicious Turkish baklava, as well as English staples such as milk, tea and bread.

This one, on Slade Lane in Longsight, has a similarly haphazard way of arranging its range of foods in a completely incomprehensible order. Like the other Worldwide, it too has a few absolute bargains, and some areas of particular excellence. Here the highlight has to be the fruit and veg, which is piled up outside the store in abundance. The selection is absolutely incredible, and stretches from common apples to lesser muched fruits and vegetables such as yams and pumpkins. They even have some miscellaneous fodder, which I cannot name, as I haven't a Scooby Doo what it is. The rest of its stock isn't bad either, with plenty of cheap tinned and jarred goods. Not the kind that should never be in a tin like spaghetti Bolognese and chilli con carne, but things which belong in tins, like olives and pestos. Its much cheaper than Sainsbury's and Tesco, and not terrible quality like Lidl and Asda, so basically, its really good.

Yummmm, chocolate!…read more Monk Bar Chocolatiers have a wide array of sweets to serve your dessert needs. When I walked along The Shambles, I was honing in for something to get my sweet tooth, and I spotted this lovely chocolatier. They offer various cream-filled chocolates and truffles, along with larger bar chocolates, drinks, and novelty items as well (I stopped by a month or so before Easter, so got to see a collection of beautiful chocolate eggs). I settled for a small box of 8 - I know I'll eat them all myself and it's my own fault if I get fat. Still, these aren't the types of chocolates you want to scarf down like a candy bar - these are rich and flavourful, and you'll get enjoyment out of each one. I'm personally a fan of truffles so I focused mainly on those, and on darker chocolates. My favourites from my collection were the Cocgnac Truffle, the Whisky Truffle, the Amaretto Truffle, the Coffee Cream (in dark chocolate), and the Gianduja. There was another one that I absolutely loved, something that was bitter and dark and presented like a truffle, but it was a limited item so they don't have it on their standard menu - bummer! If you're looking for chocolates and you're in York, you're bound to find something you like here. Their website lists many of their chocolates, but there are some unlisted options as well. Additional bonuses are friendly and knowledgeable staff, and competitive pricing. I meant to take some photos of my chocolates but...um...I ate them all too fast. Whoops? Guess I'll just have to go back for more.

And it's not uncommon to see hordes of people queuing up outside for one of their chocolate cups with chocolate sauce... and why WOULDN'T you get one of those???? I recommend getting the milk chocolate inside the dark chocolate cup. The rich, buttery, creaminess of the milk chocolate is accented even more by the ever-so-slight bitterness of the dark chocolate. Ok, so I'm now looking up the next train to York.....
