Spice Corner was his savour when selecting the mixture of mainstream and more obscure ingredients required. I don't think there is any herb or spice that the stall does not stock. The aromas that waft from the stall are fantastic, it makes me feel immediately hungry. The lady that served us was fabulous. Extremely helpful and knowledgeable about all things spicy, she guided us into finding what we needed, whilst also interjecting her own hints and tips. The prices are significantly less than the brands that rip you off in the supermarkets. So much better value, and the quality is incomparable. The stall resembles somewhere that I would like to shop, grocery shopping with personality.

The signage is much neater and clearer than many of the poorly signed stalls in the market and it packs a huge variety of products into a tiny shop. Prices are pretty cheap here and the staff are friendly and informative. At Spice Corner you're sure to find all the constituent parts of a good home-made curry and several new and unusual ingredients to try!

The stores deals in all of vast range of Indian spices, Asian fruit and vegetables, Halal meats, loads of freezers to cover the large range of Asian fish and sea food and a few other bits and bobs like cooking utensils. Ideal if you know what you are looking for but also the staff are helpful if you need help. A lot of these Asian stores are scruffy looking but this is probably the best in the area.

Never buy spices, Indian herbs or any Indian cooking ingredients from a supermarket as you pay way over the odds and for such small quantities. Practically all of the customers who shop at East West are Bangladeshi or Indian and they also supply a number of restaurants and takeaways. They get a delivery of fresh Asian vegetables every week (normally on Monday) and their in-shop butcher looks after the Halal meat side of things. It's great to try all of these Asian vegetables as they are cheap and if you don't know what to do with them the shop owner are happy to help or just have a look on the net. They have about 10 large chest freezers what are full of Asian fish and other special foods. I buy my mutton from here as these Asian supermarkets are practically the only places that sell mutton. Mutton is great for curry or any slow cooked meal and it is cheaper than lamb. If you have not shopped in one of these places before then it may be a new experience at first as sometimes when I shop here I have to step over the odd guy who has just unrolled his mat out for one of their many prays they do each day. Also don't be put of by the untidiness as this is how they all are, In general, shop here for all of your ingredients, don't be afraid to ask if you are unsure and give the supermarkets a miss.

Also purchased was a jar of Mazavaloo and this is very yummy with just about everything, what it says on the jar is what you get and is totally delish mixed in with your rice, or even couscous, gives it that little extr zing. I will defintely be trying more of Chris and Rosie's products in the future and hopefully, one day, I will actually get up to the shop for a good old look around. Smashing people, fab products! At long last York has it's very own Chinese supermarket!…read more Before chi yip opened, I had to trek all the way to Leeds city centre to stock up on all my essential Chinese cookery ingredients! There is a wide range of exotic looking fruit and veg at chi yip, some you won't recognise, some you will! you can also pick up lovely stir fry essentials such as delicious pak choi. The freezer cabinets have a wide range of precooked dim sums that you can take home and cook yourself (usually steam or deep fry) As well as frozen meat and fish. You can also buy sacks of rice, it's much cheaper to buy like this if you have room to store it!! There is a good selection of canned and jarred goods, some really interesting items, quite a number of them I've never heard of, but many that I have and would love to have a go cooking with! I would say if your new to Chinese cookery, but want to be experimental than have a recipe in mind and take the list of ingredients with you, otherwise you might get a bit over whelmed at how much 'stuff' there actually is! Last but not least is the fish and meat counter, where there is a member of staff on hand to serve you - there is also tanks of live crabs and lobster so you can literally choose which poor creature you want to take home and cook

Someone with a limited knowledge of Asian food (like me!) could spend ages browsing the well-stocked goodies, tempted to try just about anything! For the local Asian community this must be a great shop, selling so many ingredients and foods that are missing from the British equivalent. Though speaking little English the friendly woman there tried her best to answer any queries I had was very helpful. Due to the huge variety of products here I'd be very happy to call this my local shop!
