The beef cheek was unctuous, and the vegetable accompaniment has lovely notes of cinnamon and juniper in the slaw portion. The hunters stew was filling but not heavy, and well seasoned. The oscypek cheese starter is similar to halloumi, with a firm, salty chew that gets your tastebuds going. The beer selection covers the gamut of Polish beers, from light lagers to raisin-y bocks (Koźlak). There's a wide range of vodka cocktails we did not try, plus ciders and wines. And the truly house made desserts are worth saving room for. I usually pass on dessert, but the cheesecake (not sweet) and poppyseed cake were too much to resist -- and I'm glad we didn't. So filling we brought half back home. The staff was friendly, and our waitress was charming and helpful, and even helped me understand the variations of the gołabki cabbage rolls that my grandmother had called galumpkies. Turns out there are many versions (and names) of these stuffed rolls across Eastern Europe. Now I know! Definitely worth putting on your York agenda. However, it is, although reasonable for some things and as you would expect in a deli like this, some things are overpriced and I bought three items from the cheese counter (all really good!!) And one of them went out of date that day, and one the next- without being told or any little end of shelf life stickers- and you don't really check these things until you're putting them in the fridge at home when you're being handed them. My assumption was that that was the total weight of the meat I bought. However, when I got home and weighed the meat myself, it was about 35kg! I immediately rang them to report this, and they admitted that the weight displayed was inclusive of the bone! I pointed out to them that this was false advertising, especially as I wasn't given this bone that had been included in the price I paid. They admitted that they could have done better by making it clear that the displayed weight was inclusive of the removed bone. They, however, denied that they owed me any compensation for false advertising. I just want to put this out there for other unsuspecting customers like me!

The shop has really come on from what it used to be when you could buy limps of meat in packaging that was dripping in blood and it was all a rough and ready experience. Nowadays, they have a fish counter, deli, good value good quality fruit and veg etc but to me the meat is still just meat with no idea of where it is from.

They sell everything from imported pastas and grocery items to chocolates and teas. The shop side has an astounding wall of all sorts of bottled goodies that you can buy by the mL, including brandies, scotches, olive oils, and vinegars.
