Large Haddock and chips with mushy peas
Sameer M.

I have to say this is the best fish(haddock) and chips I have ever had, why? The fish came out hot, crispy, and not very oily. Once opened the fish was fresh, succulent, and meaty. The chips were crispy and not overly oily. We loved the mushy peas, smooth, and fresh. The bread was crusty and perfect with butter. For dessert, sticky toffee pudding with vanilla bean ice cream and homemade bread and butter pudding with custard. All the way from Toronto Canada to visit this gem of a spot. Highly recommend....

Best fish and chips i moved to USA and every time I visit England I come here, it's a small restaurant but always a wait because it's that great

Don't understand the hoopla. The fried haddock was good, but not amazing. I've had much better fried fish (Friday fish fry) in the states. I guess it's not bad for the area, but definitely not worthy of 5 stars. I had the fried haddock (extra large) with onion rings and chips, battered sausage, curry, and homemade tarter sauce. The sausage was not what I was expecting. It was more like a fish and chicken paste shaped like a sausage and deep fried. Not very tasty. The haddock was pretty good, but nothing special. The best part of this place was their server Stef who was incredibly kind and efficient.

Fish and chips done right. Cooked fresh to order, the friendly staff at Chez Fred serve up the best chippy food I've had for ages! Hot chips, fresh fish, homemade tartar sauce, battered sausage, pickled onions and cans of pop - a proper traditional chippy unassumingly sat on Seamoor Road. If you're in the area go here. The only reason it's not 5 stars is the portion sizes - they are on the small side, which is great for the waistline but a bit of a disappointment to the starving seaside belly you get at the end of a long day at the beach. For around £12 for 2 meals, you are full and it is great quality so it isn't a huge issue. There's also a restaurant if you'd prefer silverware and a plate rather than the paper bags and wooden cutlery (which were actually really good) you're given in the adjoining takeaway.

The daddy of fishnchips.

The sign on the door says 'Nobody does it batter' and they're not wrong. Thanks to the wonders of Qype, I looked up tasty fish and chips places in Bournemouth before we drove down yesterday for work and Chez Fred came out top o'the list. Tipped up about 8pm and there was a queue out the door but we stuck with it on account of everyone we spoke to was a regular and said it was worth the wait. In the meantime we got to peruse the signed celebrity photos on the wall (Fred's even got on off of Nasty Nick - I kid you not) and check out the menu. We only waited about 25 mins, and were waited on by a really cheery waitress. I had cod, chips and a pea fritter (never heard of it, never had one, was delish), and my colleague had the large haddock. They sell beer and fancy wines, even taittinger by the half bottle for £17.50, but I stuck with orangeade because there was no old fashioned pop like dandelion and burdock : ) It was so very tasty. The batter was crisp and light and the fish was tender and juicy and thick and the chips were slightly on the crispy side, which was nice but I am a heathen and like mine proper soggy and slightly undercooked. They also sell 'moggy bags' of fish scraps for your kitty for £1.75 or something, which I thought was dead lovely but our car would have stunk all day if I'd brought some home for Deeley. Anyway. £24 for two people for proper good fish and chips was more than reasonable. I shall be recommending Chez Fred to all and sundry now!

I have to say that we were totally disgusted with the service, attitude of staff and on some items…read moreridiculous high cost. The staff closed the toilets and left it as disabled only where you have to ask for the key. Considering we had three children, one who is autistic and has an issue with toilets, having to ask for the key every time was ridiculous. I know also that it was only because it meant they did not have to clean them later. This also then took away the reason for having a separate toilet for disabled only. If you were in a wheelchair you would have to wait for all the families to finish!! Considering the fact there were many staff doing very little it seemed the height of laziness to us as a family. We also were told that we could not have toast for one of the children, even though we asked specially as he had it his mind he was having toast and he could have marmite. The way he works he saw marmite expected toast but could not have any.... To him he did not understand. Not exactly helping in the family friendly department!!! What family restaurant can't do toast! Plus I was told by a man whilst on his way passed me. Not even "I'm sorry we are not able " or anything just "No we don't, no toast!" Then one of the children wanted a yoghurt. A tiny fromage frais you can buy anywhere, £1.25, outrageous cost, that is where it is seriously silly. Cakes and coffees you can just about understand silly prices, but that took the biscuit. Then the cheek, total disregard for the customers and seriously disrespectful attitude was apparent when the staff started putting chairs up on tables around people still drinking and eating. We felt such a need to rush out (even though they did not close their doors to customers for another 38 minutes). Service, treatment and facilities not acceptable in our mind. I won't visit again in any hurry unless its under new management. The staff need some customer service training, and also general work training. You don't just all stand in a line by the till talking when people enter. You don't try to then appear to be totally disinterested in your customers. A little smile and helpfulness goes along way. Especially when your only customers at that point are families. £60 plus was spent on just a couple of sandwiches, drinks, cakes and children's fish fingers. Ashamed is what they should be, You never know who you're serving... Golden rule of customer service...Always treat every customer as an important one no matter who they are and even if you deem them as not!!

Love the fish and chips here. I go for the Barramundi which has a crispy batter and tastes great…read more Great size portion of chips. The tartare sauce lets it down as it's not home made and from Heinz. Overall though tasty and not overpriced.

They sell some pretty fancy fish for a chippy such as Barramundi, Sea Bass, Skate Wings, Rock/Huss…read moreand Calamari! Of course they have the usual Cod and Haddock for the less adventurous too. Actually as fish and chip shops go I think these guys have one of the best menus for extras too, mushy peas, pea fritters, onion rings, curry sauce, pickled onion, gherkins and eggs, you name it! Our order of Cod and Chips , Lemon Sole & Chips and good old chicken nuggets for our lad. All was cooked freshly to order in about 10 minutes. Now one thing I will say is I have seen queues going onto the pavement before for this place so try to get an early tea if you can as after 6pm things can get busy. If you can order over the phone and then you can be one of those smug folks who walks right to the front to collect your food! Our food was served in boxes rather than just bags which makes for much easier eating if your sitting in the car or outside. I enjoyed my cod and chips, nice chunky chips and a decent portion of cod too. I even tried some mushy peas for the first time since I was a kid and there not bad actually, but I'm not sure they match KFC's chicken gravy! Over all I recommend TJ's fish and chip shop

The food is very good, and I enjoy the use of beef dripping. I ate here twice during a recent trip…read moreand the first time the service was fine. The second time, on a quiet Sunday night, the service was terrible. You get a different person for every element: menu, water, take order, bring order, follow up, bill. I don't drink so all I wanted was a glass of water, which only came after the food was served and I reminded the guy. It is difficult to flag down servers because it's almost as if they have been trained not to look at customers. But I should have known: the worst time to be in stores and restaurants is when things are quiet. The staff are doing other things - cleaning, setting tables, stocking etc. You get much better service when things are busy. Generally restaurants should put something, anything, in front of a customer while they wait for their food. Water, bread or bread sticks, whatever. I waited a loooong time at that table with nothing to do. The worst was paying bill - there was no one around. I was tempted to leave without paying because Harry's really didn't want my money. Recommendations: Harry's should use a regular time-tested policy for service with a waiter and bus boy assigned to a certain group of tables. Now the customer can know who their server is. Then, check on customers before, during and after the meal to make sure everything is okay.
